Introduction

Tom Valle
Professional Consigner

The Triumph Stag is a real head-turner, powered by a lively 3.0L V8 and drawn by one of the best automotive designers - Giovanni Michelotti - this is one great classic.

The Triumph Stag is a 2+2 sports tourer produced between 1970 and 1978 by the British Triumph Motor Company. Not only does this car sound great with its 3.0L V8 but it also has beautiful Italian design touches by Giovanni Michelotti, the man is responsible for the design of many historic Ferraris, Maseratis and Alfa marques.

The stag quickly picked up a cult following, which still remains today a stalwart when it comes to classic British cars.

The particular example has been in the meticulous hands of Nigel over the past 12 years and it's recently been treated to a fresh coat of paint too.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Tom after meeting Nigel the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

12 years of meticulous ownership and maintenance from a huge Stag fan.

Nigel has really had great fun owning this classic Triumph Stag for the past 12 years, he's dry stored it and kept it well maintained over his ownership only using it occasionally during the summer.

The car has very recently been resprayed in this beautiful vibrant red last year, which has bought a whole new lease of life back to the Stag, really making it stand out on the roads of Loughborough.

Nigel will be more than happy to answer any questions about the car you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

One of Michelotti's many great masterpieces; the beautiful Triumph Stag has its place on the British classics wall of fame.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels and tyres look great on this Stag - the car sits well and with style. The wheels look great all-round with just a little age beginning to show on the outer rim.

The tyres are Hankook Optimos / Mega MS-800s and have plenty of tread left for the new owner to enjoy, please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer view.

Bodywork

The body shows beautiful Italian inspired lines by Mr Giovanni Michelotti - the car is finished in a vibrant Pimento Red that really catches the eye.

The panel gaps look tight and correct for a car from the '70s, the shut lines also look true. Nigel reports the doors hang well off their hinges and shut without any fuss, which can be seen on the interior video. The underside could do with a little tiding due to over-spray from the recent paint work.

The car has some very light stone chips around the rear arches, as you would expect, but overall a meticulously kept Stag example.

Paint

We love the Pimento Red paintwork on this Stag. Nigel reports the car was resprayed last year in the vibrant paint, and the standard of workmanship does look very good.

The paint is even in finish and colour across all the panels.

Please take a look at the exterior photos and videos to really appreciate the paintwork.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks good around the car and in line with the age and mileage. The glass appears free from chips, cracks or delamination.

The brightwork also looks good around the car, we did notice some slight pitting and age starting to show on the front bumpers, other than that it looks great and recently polished to a high standard.

The original badges are present and starting to show some age-related wear, yet we love the originality of the car.

Interior

The perfect combination of both style and practicality - the Stag allows you to travel in comfort with the roof down.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are finished in black leather on this example, durable and perfect for use with the roof down. For its age, the seats look really good and free from major wear and tear that you may find on many others. The bolsters and cushions have retained their shape and offer comfort for long drives.

The carpets are in line with the age and mileage of the car. Some areas are beginning to show signs of wear, and we did notice some marks on the back of the chairs - but nothing to really worry about.

Please take a look at the photographs and videos for a detailed tour of the interior.

Dashboard

The dashboard is finished in a warming walnut finish, giving the cockpit a more luxurious feel.

There area a few age related marks to the dials, but they all appear to be crisp, easily legible and free from any condensation.

Nigel reports that all the dials, switches and gauges are fully working to his knowledge.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original stag steering wheel together with an automatic gear selector are both present in this roadster. Both are in good condition - you'll notice the steering wheel is pictured with an attractive and well-suited cover.

The automatic gear selector also is inline with the rest of the car.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Mechanics

A strong and lively 3.0L V8 powers this sleek roadster in speed and comfort.

Engine and Gearbox

Featuring the Triumph V8 3.0L powerplant, this engine provides all the power you need for the chassis.

Nigel assures us the engine is running very smoothly with no overheating issues and has had the radiator reconditioned in 2000, also a new thermostat and alternator fitted recently.

Please watch the cold start video to see the car starting with no fuss from cold, along with a detailed view of the engine bay and underside of the car.

Suspension and Brakes

Nigel reports the brakes are working very well and exactly as you would expect. He also reports that the suspension provides a very smooth ride, free from any unusual knocks or noises.

Please view the mechanical photos for a closer look at the underside of this car.

The Drive

Wind through your hair-motoring, V8 power, dashing good looks, this Stag does not fail to disappoint. Not to mention the space available for luggage and friends; what more could you ask for.

It's a practical '70s sports car, ready to turn heads where you go.

Electrics and Other

Fairly basic electrics as you expect from a car of this era. The car also appears to feature a period-correct radio which fits in on the walnut dashboard very well.

A heater is installed for those cold winter months. Nigel reports that the radio and electrics are fully working to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

Coming out of 12 years of meticulous ownership, this Stag has really been given the attention it deserves - UK RHD with a fresh repaint of Pimento Red.

In February 2000, Douglas Auto & Coachworks restored some mechanical aspects of the car including changing the transmission oil, reconditioning the start motor, radiator, fitting visco fan & blades, and a whole host of the hoses and pipes were also replaced.

Hi Nigel, How difficult is it to put the hood up and down? Is there any chance you could add a video of this being done or take one with your phone and get trade classics to text or email it to me? Also can you confirm that it is waterproof when in situ please?

Many thanks
Rose

there are many signs of rust that appear to have simply been painted over! Have any of these areas had repair / rust prevention done to them before painting?
