Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

With classic V8 power and stylish Michelotti design, the Stag is a true classic with a cult following.

The Triumph Stag is a 2+2 sports tourer which was produced between 1970 and 1978 by Triumph and styled by Giovanni Michelotti - a very talented Italian designer. Packing a punch with its 3.0L V8, this offered 145bhp and a top speed of 120mph. The Stag is a great-looking and great-sounding British sports car with a huge following.

Finished in "Triumph White" with gold pinstripes, and contrasting tan interior, this is quite the usable example, an older restoration from the 90s, and comes to market from 4 years of ownership, this is a genuine example to be used and improved over time.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Philip the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Like most Stag owners, I love it because of the styling, such an attractive car.

Philip has owned this Stag for the past 4 years and enjoyed every second. He really enjoys using the car on the weekends during the summer. As you can see from the paperwork section, the car was treated to a restoration in the 90s in previous ownership, with engine work carried out around 2006.

Part of the reason for picking up a Stag was that Philip was looking for a British classic, with a decent amount of cabin space, the 2+2 format being a great fit on this. Having had his fun with the car over the years, and a lock of more recent use, it comes to auction with us. He will be more than happy to answer any of your questions on the car in the comments below.

Exterior

The Italian styled design has become a favourite British classic, these cars are instantly recognisable.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with Kent 14” alloys, the wheels on this car look in good condition in line with the mileage and restoration.

The are wrapped in Avon ZT5's tyres at the front dated 2017, on the rear are Bridgestone SF-370, both sets appear to have a decent amount of tread left for the new owner. Take a look at the photos and videos for a closer view of the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The car stands straight and true, panel gaps etc look good across the car. With its 30 years on the road since restoration, the car does have a number of little blemishes, most of these look to be superficial. In general the car appears to be free from corrosion, one area to note though is the bottom of the offside rear wing where it meets the sill trim, there appears to be come corrosion present under the paint as pictured.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The “Triumph White" paintwork on this car looks good, it has on the whole an even colour and finish match across all the panels. With this being an older restoration, it has picked up a number of nicks across the car, most notable on leading edges of doors, and a bigger area on the bonnet near the offside scuttle.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

All the glass, rubber and seals appear in line with the age and mileage of the car.

The trim on the car is showing its age, the bottoms of the bumpers looking like they would benefit from re-chroming, and further wear around the front grill and badging. Take a look at the photos and videos for a closer view of the glass and trim. Please note, this car does not come with a hard top, and Philip has provided pictures of the soft-top up which looks in good condition inside and out, along with the windows.

Interior

Attractive tan interior, a big selling point for the Stage was its practicality at transporting the whole family.

Seats and Carpets

Tan seats are a very attractive highlight in this car, pairing well against the paintwork. Overall the seats are in good condition within this Stag, the drivers seat though has a very small tear and is showing its age.

The carpets tell a similar story, on the whole they are ok, but do have some blemishes that come with time.

Dashboard

The dashboard appears in line with the rest of the interior, in fairly good condition throughout. The dials, switches, controls and gauges look great and Philip reports they're all working, bar the timing clock and the speedo works but does not read below 10MPH.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look at the interior.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Both the original Stag steering wheel and gear stick with overdrive appear to be in good original condition, the stitching and condition of the covers look good on both, ready to be enjoyed by the new owner.

Mechanics

Triumph's own 145bhp, 3.0-litre, V8 delivers 0-60 in 10.5 seconds and a top speed of 117 mph – pretty good, even by today’s standards.

Engine and Gearbox

On our visit we actioned a cold start as captured in the video. The car fired up straight away, and we didn't observe any concerning smoke etc from the exhaust on gentle revs of the engine.

We've captured a detailed mechanical video that shows the car out on the road and a view around the engine bay. On the short trip out, the car went through the gears with apparent ease. Please take a look at the detailed media pack to see a closer view of the engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

There were no obvious knocks or rattles on the drive out. Please watch the video to see the car accelerating, steering and stopping. It performed just as you’d expect, Philip talks us through how the car is performing. Please view the mechanical photos and video to see underneath the car.

The Drive

With 3.0L of power at your disposal, travel anywhere is speed and style. The Stag offers the open top motoring experience with enough room for all your luggage as well.

Electrics and Other

Philip advises that all lights, switches, heater and tape player, electrics work as they should to his knowledge. The car is fitted with an aftermarket stereo as pictured.

History and Paperwork

Coming out of 4 years of ownership, this UK RHD white over tan example is ready to be enjoyed from the get go, and improved over time.

Registered new on the 29th September 1972, this car has been enjoyed by Philip over the last four years. Take a look at the media to see all the history included within the sale of the car.

Philip will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the car in the comments below.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.
