Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

Top down style with great looks and awesome sounds - the Triumph Stag is a really enjoyable, usable and popular British classic.

Launched in 1970 the Triumph Stag met with approval from both the motoring press and the public. With styling provided by the talented Giovanni Michelotti, one of the most prolific designers of sports cars in the 20th century with design contributions to Ferrari and Maserati. The Triumph is a stylish 2+2, two door convertible and was like nothing else from a British manufacturer at the time. The sports tourer was produced between 1970 and 1978 and packed a punch with its 3.0L V8. The Stag offered up ~145BHP, a 0-60 time in ~10.5 seconds and top speed of ~117MPH. The Stag is a great looking and great sounding British sports car with a huge following, which is easy to see why.

This example, whilst largely original, has also benefitted from reconditioned wheels and gearbox and also a replacement clutch in 2019, completed less than ~1,000 miles ago. Having been dry stored and not used in the rain over the last ~3 years, the interior of the Stag looks great and is dry throughout. The car is complete with its original engine which retains that classic Triumph "burble" from the V8. The car would make a great light project to improve further, but equally is a fantastic car that is ready to drive and enjoy right now, coming to market with a fresh clean MOT.

This listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Lynton the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've always been a fan of classic British motoring and the Triumph ticks all the boxes for me!

Triumph cars have always been a firm favourite of Lyntons, having owned classic cars for many years, he said, "for me, I love a Stag and I'm exactly the right age for one!".

Lynton is a fan of keeping his cars as original as possible, he went on to say, "I've not had to upgrade much on the car over the past ~3 years thanks to the works carried out by the previous owners, one of the main reasons I purchased the car in the first place was because of the updates to the Stag, particularly the reconditioned gearbox and new clutch which was a really important job at the time".

With less time on his hands than when he first got the car, the Triumph reluctantly comes to market from the current owner, Lynton said, "I really love this car but I'm just not using it as much, I've done so few miles over the past year or so that I feel it would be better suited to someone who can enjoy it more".

Exterior

Elegant and powerful British motoring with Italian design heritage from arguably one of the most creative car designers - the Triumph Stag is a truly iconic '70s sports car.

Wheels and Tyres

The Triumph is fitted with a set of '70s era 14" Kent Stag wheels. These are in great condition all round having been refurbished in 2019, just a few marks noted to them but overall didn't raise any major concerns.

Equipped with a set of grippy Hankook Optima tyres to the front and rear, the tyres have a spec of 185/80 on all four corners. Front tyres are date coded at 2018 as are the rear tyres. All four tyres were replaced along when the wheels were reconditioned in January 2019. The tyres show well with no major signs of wear noted on our visit.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of this Stag and a closer look at the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The car stands level, shut lines look great and we could see no visible distortion to the panels - both doors, boot, and bonnet open and close well. We did note signs of corrosion to the rear nearside lower quarter panel, there will be a little work required by the future owner to rectify this and reflected in the low reserve price.

There are a few bits over the car that could be address be the new owner - we've highlighted these observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The "French Blue" finish is a stunning colour and generally there is a consistent and even coat across the car. There are only minor blemishes noted to the paint. We did spot a sign of paint blistering on the rear offside quarter panel and on the seals on the top of the boot edge.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of paint for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Overall the glass and trim on the Stag showed in good condition with no major cause for concern. Windscreen and side windows all look good with no significant scratching, marks or chips.

The finish on the soft top roof shows well and without issue. The plastic window section to the rear of the soft top roof shows well and without cracking or damage.

The seals look good around the outside and in line with the rest of the condition of the car. Rubber sections on the interior edges looked good and only showed a few signs of wear, which is to be expected. Badges and light sections also look good.

Chrome is generally good - there are few sections that could do with attention and you'll see these in the images.

We've taken you around the car in greater detail in our exterior review video, please take the time to look over the video and see how the glass and trim look from different perspectives.

Interior

The perfect combination of both style and practicality - the Stag allows you to travel in comfort with the roof down.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are finished with black vinyl with the material still looking great across the coverings. All seats in the car look in good condition with only a little sign of wear to the bolster sections - overall, this was a nicely presented interior.

Looking over the carpet sections, the mats look to be in good condition, especially in the front as these were newly fitted. We took a look underneath the carpet sections and did note a few signs of what looks like surface corrosion on the main floor sections, which we've captured in our gallery sections.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

Dashboard

The dash area across the Stag showed nicely with no major scuffs, scratches or unwanted issues that we observed. The walnut burr finish to the dash panelling was a great highlight of the cabin area.

Clocks and dials showed in a good condition with the exception of the voltage meter which had some wear to it. The mileage counter showed with ~37,195 miles at the time of our visit. We noted no warning lights on the display when the car was on the road.

Please take a look at the gallery images for a closer look at the interior sections.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The Triumph branded wheel isn't original but does look in really great condition. The outer wood rim compliments the walnut interior finish nicely.

Should it be required, a replacement top section for the gear stick is supplied with the car, although the current one is functioning without concern.

Mechanics

Triumph's own ~145 BHP, 3L, V8 delivers 0-60 in ~10.5 seconds and a top speed of ~117 MPH from factory - more than capable of keeping up with modern motoring.

Engine and Gearbox

The car is complete with its original engine which retains that classic Triumph 'burble' from the 3.0L V8. A great upgrade to the Stag is the reconditioned gearbox and updated clutch fitted fewer than ~1,000 miles ago.

We noted no issues from start up which we've highlighted in the mechanical review video. Take a look over the video for yourselves to hear the Triumph start up and take in the lovely sounds of the V8. We go into further detail about the Stag and take it out on some local roads to get a better sense of what this car is all about.

Suspension and Brakes

On the drive out, Lynton took us around some local roads - we heard no unwanted knocks or noises from the suspension which provided an enjoyable journey.

We did note a couple of rattles when sat in the cabin area out on the road, although these were only heard when the car drove over potholes in the road. We cover off the underside of the Stag's exterior in our Mechanical gallery section.

The brakes felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey and brought the car to a stop without a problem and with the kind of stopping power you'd expect. Overall the car performed as to be expected with no observed issues. Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

The Drive

A very practical '70s sports GT, with a 3.0L V8 capable of delivering some great performance. The Stag is genuinely comfortable, a relatively rare factor for the era, and provides a good amount of space for both drivers and passengers alike.

We take the Stag out on some local roads to get a better feel for the car. Head over to the 'On the Road' video to hear our thoughts on the journey, additional feedback from the owner and to see how the car performs.

Electrics and Other

Being a '70s car the setup is relatively simple in the cabin area. The stereo system has been removed and a blanking plate is fitted in its absence. The windows go up and down well and headlamps were working too. There is a retro fitted USB charger and 12V in the glovebox section.

As well as the watertight soft top, a hardtop is also supplied with the car, although this section would benefit from a good level of restoration to bring it up to the standard of the rest of the bodywork. The Stag is complete with a spare steel wheel in the boot but does include another spare wheel, the same Kent Stag 14" wheel as featured in the main images.

Lynton told us that he has had no issues with the electrical elements on the car and to the best of his knowledge, everything was working as it should do.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~3 year ownership and a recent reconditioned gearbox and updated clutch, this UK RHD example is ready and waiting for a new keeper to cherish classic ownership.

The car has had a lot of parts renewed and restored over the previous few years which we've detailed based on the paperwork history below. A full service was carried out in September 2021 costing ~£350. The Stag has benefitted from a reconditioned gearbox and updated clutch install in August 2019 which cost over ~£450 in total. Some of the other upgrades included in 2019 cover off: a new reversing light switch; new 'Stag' badges; gear-lever overdrive switch; overdrive harness; oil pressure switch; new alternator; updated oil transfer housing; overdrive repair and a new speedometer cable.

In 2017, a new water pump was installed which, including the labour costs - over ~£680. In the same year, the carburettor was serviced and balanced, the engine was re-tuned and timing reset. Both rear brake flexible hoses were replaced and the brakes were bled, a new brake master cylinder was fitted and brake fluid was replaced with these works costing ~£920. New front seat belts were also fitted along with new window lift switches. Major works were carried out on the overdrive and gearbox in March 2017 where the unit was fully dismantled and a full recondition of the components was completed with works costing ~£1,200.

The boot carpet and boarding was renewed as well as a new cooling fan and coupling, new spark plugs, rear trim panel, sun visors, new polybushes, clutch kit, pilot bushings, wiper / wash stalk, wheel bearing kit, rear bumper and a new boot lock all were also fitted to the car in 2017.

The Stag has just had an MOT actioned, expiring next year on 27/07/2024.

Should there be any questions required, Lynton would be happy to answer these in the section below.
