Introduction

Matthew Nolan
Professional Consigner

Without doubt the last and best shape from the TR range - its chisel-jaw and sharp lines make for a complete and well rounded two-seater sports car.

Sports car design in the late 1960’s was still very much of the curved design, as opposed to the more modern look of the TR6 in 1968, with its chiselled looks and sharp lines restyled by the German company Karmann. The Triumph already had a good base with the last TR to favour the separate chassis to body design. The car had independent rear suspension, front anti-roll bar, rack and pinion steering and front disc brakes, and to top it off, it was fitted with the wonderful 2.5 litre straight-six engine.

This particular 1972 Triumph TR6 was restored by a previous keeper in the early 2000’s, and has been cherished by its other owners, who have kept the car in beautiful condition. Looking at the mileage history, clearly it has spent more time being pampered than driven.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Matthew after meeting Mike the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I’ve owned the TR6 for approximately 2.5 years and thoroughly enjoyed it - it is now time for another enthusiast to take over the reins.

Mike purchased this 1972 Triumph TR6 to tick one of his all-time favourite owned cars off his list. Having owned and maintained the car for 2.5 years he has enjoyed it immensely, showing it, driving it and, obviously, as with any classic car, tinkering with it.

Now with another classic in his sight, the restored TR6 is ready to make a move from the warm storage bubble, and look forward to its next enthusiastic owner.

Mike will be happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

It was Karmann who set the level for the new TR range, bringing Triumph into a more modern way of styling.

Wheels and Tyres

The original steel wheels have been refinished in silver and are in good condition, with just a couple of age related marks, which could be easily rectified on a sunny afternoon. There are some chrome trims fitted to the dish, and the wheels have matching TR6 centre caps.

The tyres are matching Dunlop Sport Classics and have a good amount of tread remaining.

Bodywork

Restyled by Karman, we think you’ll agree that the TR6 has a stunning shape with just enough curves in the right places.

Looking around the TR6 it has been finished really well, with a great deal of care. The panel gaps look to be as they should. There may be a small amount of improvement needed for the boot lid and the passenger door, as these sit a little proud.

The roof is in good condition with no damage. It does look to have some areas which have faded slightly, but let's face it, the roof will usually be off. Please take the time to look through the hi-resolution images we have taken for a more detailed look at the exterior.

Paint

When Mike got the car it had already had an extensive restoration carried out some time ago, and so the paintwork is in really good condition. It was just a matter of keeping it that way, which Mike does by storing the car in a bubble inside his garage.

There are a couple of stone chips dotted about the front panel and by the rear wheel arch, but nothing too excessive.

Please take the time to fully assess the condition of the exterior. The images taken are from various angles and reflections to show off the wonderful TR6 at its best, as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The windows all appear to be in good order, with no noticeable scratches, other than a couple of light age related marks you often find. The window rubbers look to have been replaced at the time of the respray. The plastic rear windows have a few light crease marks from the roof storage, but they look to be relatively scratch free.

The lights are in good order to the front and rear, along with the chrome surrounds. The chrome bumpers and door mirrors also look to be in excellent condition with their bright finish.

Interior

New seats offer superb comfort whilst blasting down the B roads with the roof off.

Seats and Carpets

The seats in the TR6 have been replaced with MX5 items, which were then retrimmed in Italy's finest black leather, and so these are in excellent condition. Wooden trims finish the tops of the door cards, which are also in very good condition.

The carpets also look to have been replaced at some point, as these show no signs of excessive wear. Lifting up the carpet, the yellow floor can be seen, which looks to be as clean as the exterior.

The boot is just as well presented. The carpet is unmarked, and removing the carpet to the rear will reveal the aluminium fuel tank and again, it’s clear to see the yellow paintwork ensuring everywhere was covered during the restoration.

Dashboard

The dashboard is finished in black to the outer, with a wooden effect fascia, which is in nice condition with no excessive scratches to the lacquered finish. All of the dashboard looks to be in good order for the age of the vehicle, other than a small split near to the heater controls.

The instruments are in nice condition and working as they should, with the rev counter having had an overhaul in June 2021. The gauges now have bright, back-lit LED lighting, making it much easier to see them. The odometer has a reading of 70,690 miles. Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A classic Moto-Lita three spoke leather bound steering wheel points the TR6 in the right direction and this has no signs of excessive use.

The gear knob is wooden and in good order, along with the gear shift gaiter.

Mechanics

A beautifully presented engine bay houses the wonderful and powerful 2.5 litre straight-six.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.5 litre straight-six engine sitting inside this lovely Triumph TR6 engine bay has seen a nice amount of attention to detail given to it and it shows when the engine fires up first time from cold, as can be seen in our mechanical review video.

The 2.5 litre sounds fantastic, fuelled by triple carburettors, and breathing through a stainless steel manifold and exhaust system, it’s clear this TR6 will deliver the goods as soon as you press the loud pedal. The fuel injection metering head was sent to Neil Ferguson, along with the injectors, for a complete overhaul which included new injection pipes in 2018.

Coupled to a 4-speed plus overdrive, Mike reports the change is smooth and the overdrive is working as it should.

Suspension and Brakes

With rebuilt suspension at the time of the restoration in the early 2000’s, the TR6 is in excellent condition. Additionally, a new chassis had been fitted prior to the bodywork being completed. No leaks were visible at the time of our visit when looking under the car at the suspension. Between 2018 - 2019, the front anti-roll bar has been powder coated, and new up-rated poly bushes fitted.

Like the rest of the car, the brakes are well maintained bringing the TR6 to a halt in a straight line with no juddering through the pedal. The brake servo has been overhauled and the rear brakes powder coated with new shoes fitted.

The Drive

As you can see from our mechanical review video, the TR6 sounds great out on the road and the drive of the car is nice and easy, making it 10 times more enjoyable. The 2.5 litre straight-six pulls well through the gearbox, with the change being nice and smooth.

Electrics and Other

The switchgear in the Triumph is reported by Mike to be working as it should and there doesn’t look to be any signs of wear to the lettering on the switches. The gauges for the oil pressure show a healthy reading for the TR6’s power unit.

History and Paperwork

With a large collection of photographs showing the restoration of the TR6, it’s easy to see how much work went into the car.

Looking back at the MOT history, the car has been in constant use, with regular MOTs since 2006, even if it has only been covering ~1,000 miles per year.

There is an extensive history file with the car showing photographs during and after the restoration. There are invoices and receipts present for parts and work carried out, and since 2016 everything has been saved. You will also see in the paperwork gallery a detailed list of some more extensive work carried out between 2018 - 2019.

Mike has enjoyed his time with the British built Triumph TR6 and now it is time to let another enthusiast become the custodian of this restored 1972 classic.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
