Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

Arguably one of Triumphs greatest sports car, and one of the last proper TRs.

The TR6 was built between 1968 and 1976. The first bodies were built in Liverpool, and the '6' was the best-seller of the TR range. Out of the ~91,850 produced, only ~8,370 were ever sold in the UK. The frame, engine, running gear, body tub, and doors were very similar to the Michelotti-styled TR5. The design of the front and rear of the car was restyled by Karmann of Germany, yet rumors claim the squared-off tail design was a Michelotti prototype.

This is a driver's example of the TR6, ready to be enjoyed and cosmetically improved. It's coming out of ~4 years of ownership and features disc brakes and overdrive fitted from the factory. The history shows historic work over time in the 2000s, including a head conversion to run on unleaded petrol, and in current ownership brake work too. The TR6 also comes with a new tonneau cover, the private number plate FOX 587L is also included in the sale.

This listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I’ve always wanted a TR6, and for the past ~4 years, I’ve had the pleasure of owning this one.

When John retired, he fancied pursuing his dream of owning a classic Triumph. The TR6 always stood out to him, and he set about looking for one. This car features a loud, raspy exhaust, which we think sounds great. Finished in "New White" (19) and with its sharp good looks, it was the complete package for John.

John uses the car regularly to drive into town and for trips away with his wife. However, he is now looking for something a little more modern and performance-focused to enjoy for years to come, and so it is up for sale. He'll be happy to answer any questions you have about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

With its sharp, chisel-chinned exterior by Karmann’s design team, the TR6 turns heads on every journey.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with steel wheels with chrome trim and black centres, the wheels are presented in good condition. The tyres are Pirelli P6's and Tigar TG635 Contacts, and appear in good condition with some light signs of age.

Take a look at the media pack for a detailed view of the tires and wheels; a full-size spare can also be found in the boot.

Bodywork

The bodywork on the car looks in good but used condition, as you would expect for a 70s classic that hasn't been restored. The shut-lines are generally ok, but the off-side door would benefit from adjustment, the nearside door less so. There are signs of corrosion visible on the car, most notably on top of the wing on the nearside, the off-side lower front wing and door skin, and similar on the nearside door skin.

Please take a close look at the condition of the bodywork in the media pack, where we have captured the exterior in great detail.

Paint

Finished in its Triumph "New White" (19) paint, the condition presents as a used example. The colour across the car looks to be even, but there are multiple areas where age has taken its toll and the paint is cracked, along with redness coming through on the wheel arch lips and sills as pictured.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to make up your own mind about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows appear to be in good condition. The windscreen shows no major damage and the windows are in good order. This looks the same for the soft-top too as pictured.

The brightwork on the car is in good condition overall, with only a small amount of age-related tarnishing. Once again, please take a look at the images to see these details up close.

Interior

A classic British sports car interior, finished in black vinyl with a wood trim dash.

Seats and Carpets

The black vinyl seats have maintained their shape well over the years.

A similar condition is evident in the door cards and carpets. For a comprehensive view of the cabin, we invite you to examine the extensive media provided.

Dashboard

The dashboard is covered in black vinyl and a wood veneer fascia that showcases six gauges in front of the driver.

On this TR6, the dashboard exhibits no significant damage, with the exception to cracking to the top as pictured. There were no warning lights displayed, and the odometer read ~15,347 miles during our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A Triumph wood rimmed steering wheel is fitted. This example is in good condition, consistent with the mileage of this car.

The wooden gearstick seems to be in great shape too. For a closer look, please refer to the image gallery to see the details.

Mechanics

Powered by a 2.5L inline-six, the car offered the driver ~150BHP from factory with a very impressive top speed of ~119MPH.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.5-litre inline-six engine fired up from cold straight away, and once warm, it idled smoothly. No untoward noises are coming from the engine bay, and everything appears to be in good order. John reports there is a small oil leak on the engine. The engine had an overhaul in 2011, and the head converted to run on unleaded fuel. There has been work actioned on the fuel injection system, including in current ownership, details in the invoices.

The gearbox features an overdrive in 3rd and 4th gears, and John operated the gearbox with ease on the drive. We have a video of the Triumph's cold start, along with on the road, take a look to see and hear it.

Suspension and Brakes

On the road, the Triumph TR6 handles well, just as you would expect from a 70s sports car.

During our short drive in the car, it behaved well, coming to a stop without any issues as well. You'll see from the history, the car had new calipers and pads fitted to the front brakes in 2022 along with the master cylinder.

The Drive

An extremely fun and enjoyable driving experience is offered with the Triumph TR6. John has thoroughly enjoyed using the car for short road trips around his hometown and holidays away with his wife.

On the road the car felt responsive, exhibiting ample power to propel it along the road and through sweeping corners. We didn't notice any unusual noises from the car.

Electrics and Other

Although we didn't test all the electrics during our visit, John reports that, to the best of his knowledge, all of the electrical components are functional and operational, consistent with the overall condition of the car. A modern Sony CD player is installed, and a luggage rack is installed on the boot.

History and Paperwork

A driver's example of the TR6 coming to market from 4 year ownership, it is ready to be enjoyed this summer.

The car is coming out of ~4 years of ownership with John. It boasts a wealth of originality and is equipped with the 2.5L straight-six engine, providing it plenty of power for any roadtrip. Additionally, the car includes a new tonneau cover which appears to be in good condition and is pictured in the paperwork photographs. The private number plate FOX 587L is also included in the sale.

Details of factory fitted equipment: Overdrive, Heater, Static Seat Belts, Disc Brakes, 165x15 Dunlop SP Sport Tyres.

Please review the paperwork and media that showcase previous MOT reports, heritage certificate, servicing records, and the parts this Triumph TR6 has received over its lifetime.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa.
