Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

Michelotti's masterpiece finished in Magenta, this 3.0L V8 powered convertible offers everything you'd ever want on your next road trip.

The Stag is a great looking and great sounding British sports car with a huge following, it's a 2+2 sports tourer which was produced between 1970 and 1978 by the British Triumph Motor Company and styled by Giovanni Michelotti - one very talented Italian designer. Packing a punch with its 3.0L V8 which offers 145BHP and a top speed of 120MPH.

This car comes to market from ~2.5 years ownership, over which time the current owner has spent significant money on the mechanical aspects. An engine rebuild was carried out in 2021, as well as more recent tuning and radiator coring and electric fan installation coming at a cost of over ~£12,000, and the car had an interior re-trim in leather in 2010. Finished in Magenta, it's quite the head-turner, and comes to market with a keen reserve.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Nick the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A true petrolhead and car enthusiast, Nick has always fancied owning a Triumph Stag.

Nick has owned this Triumph Stag for ~2.5 years now. His main criteria were a sports car that could accommodate his entire family. The Stag was ideal, allowing him to take his family to local classic shows and pick his children up from school in '70s style!

In 2021 Nick had a complete engine rebuild carried out by Anderson racing engines and Bristol Classic Car restorations, take a look at the history and paperwork to see all the individual parts supplied and fitted during the rebuild. It's been a bit of journey, with the works having to be carried out by two companies, after one liquidated, but he persevered thankfully. More recent work including tuning and radiator coring along with electric fan installation has taken his expenditure to over ~£12,000. Nick will be happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

An unmistakable and favourite design amongst British classic car enthusiasts, the 2+2 convertible format of this sporting GT was a hit.

Wheels and Tyres

Wire wheels are all looking in very good condition on this Stag. They really set the look of the car off, and the chrome wheels look great with the other brightwork trim around the car. We did notice a little bit of surface corrosion on the rear wheels. Nick reports the wheels were replaced around early 2000's.

Accelera Eco Plush tyres are fitted at the rear, with Hifly HF201 and Sava Perfecrta tyres wrapping the front wheels. The tyres appear to have a good amount of tread left for the new owner. View the gallery to see the detail.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this Triumph Stag is in good condition, in line with the higher mileage this car has covered. The panel gaps look ok in the main, there's some small adjustments that possibly could be made to the boot and doors. We noticed some areas of corrosion on to the bodywork around the lower sections of some of the wheel arches, the drivers door, and some areas on the boot lid too.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a vibrant and classic "Magenta" from factory (92), the paint appeared in good condition on our visit, considering the age of the car. There are a few areas of age-related marks across the bodywork, and we noticed some lacquer peel in a couple of places as pictured.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this example looks great and in line with the mileage and ownership, we didn't notice any major chips, cracks, or discolouration on our visit. The window seals look good too and in line with the rest of the condition of the car. The head light lenses and surrounds have been replaced in Nick's ownership this year too.

The car comes with the colour-matched hard-top as pictured. The soft-top mechanism is in great condition and works smoothly, the condition of the top is good and effective agains the weather. The rear screen is clear and unmarked, and the soft-top itself has had one repair, and some minor stitching issues to one side. The brightwork in terms of bumpers could do with being refreshed to improve the overall presentation, some age related pitting/corrosion showing. View the image gallery to see the detail.

Interior

The interior retains its class and elegance with a cream leather interior that pairs so well against the Magenta paintwork.

Seats and Carpets

The Stag is fitted with cream/white coloured leather seats with contrasting black vinyl and wood burl trim across the interior. These seats have held their shape very well over the years, an interior re-fit having been actioned in previous ownership in 2010. We noticed some age related wear to the drivers seat bolster as pictured.

The carpets, door cards and headlining tell a very similar story, in great condition throughout. Take a look in the photos and videos for a closer view.

Dashboard

The black dash looks tightly bound whilst all gauges and dials are clearly legible. There are some minor signs of patina here, but overall the dashboard looks very good, please see the photos.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A smart wood rimmed Moto-Lita Stag steering wheel is fitted which appears in great condition, a new item fitted in the past.

The black gearstick with overdrive looks good too as pictured.

Mechanics

The throaty V8 is a natural-born cruiser, this example with a custom twin exhaust to further enhance the sound.

Engine and Gearbox

Please watch the "On the Road" video to see the car being started from cold, then run when up to temperature. On our short trip out, Nick operated the gears and overdrive with ease.

In 2021 Nick had a complete engine rebuild at the cost of ~£7,800 by Anderson racing engines and Bristol Classic Car restorations, take a look at the history and paperwork to see all the individual parts supplied and fitted during the rebuild. The car has also seen maintenance work in the past year that includes rebuild of the carbs, new water pump, radiator and cooling work, and power steering work too (post the last MOT), taking his expenditure to over ~£12,000.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension has been checked over as part of the work that Nick has had actioned in the past, with no remedial actions required. It operates as you'd expect, on the drive out we didn't observe anything untoward. The brakes have been maintained as required, working satisfactorily.

The Drive

A very practical 70s sports GT, with 3.0L of power at your disposal, and with enough room for the family, what more could you want on a British Summer's day.

Electrics and Other

All main electrics working, including electric windows (switches and one regulator replaced this year), dashboard lights and overdrive. The interior fan is currently untested (no fuse, and car only driven in good weather), the cigarette lighter electrics are working but the after-market knob doesn't reach the contact points so does not heat, the clock is tested but not wired.

The car is fitted with an after-market Revotec electric fan - temperature controlled with cockpit over-ride. In addition to this, the car is fitted with concealed bluetooth receiver and rear speakers with period dashboard on/off / volume knob.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~2.5 years of ownership, this car benefits from an engine rebuild in 2021, and comes to auction with a keen reserve, get out and drive!

This car is coming out of ~2.5 years of ownership with Nick. Take a look at the media to see all the history included within the sale of the car, including the MOT reports dating back to 1983 and the recent engine rebuild carried out last year, and more recent tuning and cooling work typical for a Stag, taking expenditure to over ~£12,000. Looking through the paperwork, the car saw an interior re-fit with cream leather seat covers in 2010.
