Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

The Stag is a perfect blend of practicality and performance - and this is an exception example of that.

A difficult car to pigeonhole, the Triumph Stag is one of those classics that has both appeal as a cruiser and a touch of sporting ability. When it was first unveiled in 1970, there simply was no car quite like it, and to a certain extent that still remains the case. The Michelotti-styled body, offers space for 4 adults, with the benefit of open-top motoring. A natural-born cruiser, its lazy but satisfying smooth V8 power delivery suits lower-speed county lanes, yet has been proven to travel the main roads with ease. Genuinely comfortable sports cars were rare in the 1970s but the Stag was one of them.

This well-presented 1973 MK1 version has seen a handful of cosmetic enhancements, as part of its carefully prepared overhaul. Finished in an appealing French Blue, this automatic version of BL's potential world beater has seen much of its mechanical attributes completely overhauled, including a reconditioned engine and gearbox. It comes to market from ~4 year ownership, recent expenses total £4,500 and it has seen a full inspection from a renowned specialist.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Its a pretty, practical, four-seat convertible - I love it.

John is no stranger to the Triumph Stag having owned other examples of the model in the past. Since overhauling and sorting out the cosmetics on this car over the last three years, it has been used but John confesses that he feels guilty for not driving it as much as he should do.

John hopes it will end up with the right owner who will enjoy it and make the most of its potential. He will be more than happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

A stunning-looking car, with a very positive presentation.

Wheels and Tyres

The alloys are unmarked and show very little in terms of wear. They are matched up to a full set of equally as presentable Falken tyres, which appear to date from 2018.

Bodywork

The bodywork presentation should inspire confidence, as it really is free of any immediate impediments, other than a few age-related blemishes spotted on the lower nearside door. The structure looks solid with no visual signs of issues in regards to the floor pan, engine bay, hood well, boot floor, jacking points or inner wings.

Similarly, there is very little to mark down the exterior condition of the car. There's an argument to suggest that the panel gaps and fit are better than when the car left Solihull in 1973. All the doors open and close with ease, with new boot and door seals noted.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paint has been well applied throughout, with no significant observations of age. The lustre of the French Blue paint is very good, with no signs of swirls or blemishes. The car is generally free of paint chips or road wear damage.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The original spec has been enhanced with stainless sill covers, bonnet insulation kit and body stripes, with no obvious signs of wear noted on anything other than the badging. All items are well fixed to the car.

The chrome is in very good shape, with the bumpers, in particular, standing out as being outstanding.

The glass is free of any damage, and the windscreen is said to be a new item.

Interior

The interior has clearly been well maintained and is enhanced by a new burr walnut facia and MK2 seats.

Seats and Carpets

John has fitted MK2 seats to the car, which show very little in terms of age. The back seats and door cards are similarly presented in a positive fashion.

The carpets are recently fitted items, with no obvious flaws. All were bone dry.

Dashboard

Asides from a handful of minor cracks on the top of the dashboard, the presentation of the cabin is in super shape, enhanced by the recent fitting of the burr walnut facia.

The dials and controls are good, with some signs of age noted on the heater controls but overall the visuals are positive considering the age of the car. The car has been fitted with a digital radio.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is free from any significant wear, with minor signs of age but still very presentable. The gear lever is in a similarly original state.

Mechanics

Treated to a reconditioned engine and gearbox, the Triumph V8 experience is a deeply satisfying

Engine and Gearbox

An assurance that the engine and gearbox have seen recent attention can be attested by the car's instant start-up. There were no signs of hesitation or lumpiness from the engine as it idled.

The exhaust after the initial condensation was at no stage smoky. The gearbox changes were slick, with a good kick down, to be expected with the gearbox having been rebuilt last year.

No fluid leaks were observed in the garage storage and the engine temperature remained stable.

Suspension and Brakes

The car rides well, with no immediate signs of knocking or unwanted noises from the suspension, much of the distance travelled was at low speed but the owner has confirmed its capacity to ride at speed without any negative feedback.

The brakes are effective in bringing the car to a halt, with no squeals or juddering. The steering remained true throughout.

The Drive

Blessed with a lovely sunny autumn day, the Stag was in its element along the semi-rural settings. The car is amazingly buffer-free at lower speeds, and the space and sheer comfort of the experience adds to the Stag's sense of occasion. The oil pressure and engine temperature remained in check throughout the test drive, with the engine left running without any issues.

John demonstrated how the effortless and relaxed nature of the car has not diminished over time - the turbine smooth V8 and stainless steel tailpipes enhancing the character of the Stag and presenting plenty of reasons to take it out for a drive; just for the sake of it.

Electrics and Other

The car has seen an electrical overhaul along with new water, petrol and breather hoses. The petrol tank has also been fitted with new sender units.

The soft top is in good condition with minor signs of wear, but no significant damage as such. It raised and lowers without any issues.

History and Paperwork

Over £4,500 has been spent in the last ~4 years, with several invoices coming from respected Stag specialists, this car is ready for someone to enjoy this summer.

John originally picked up the car as a project, having owned a Stag in the past. Much of the work was carried out over the lockdown, with exterior trim and engine seeing much of the attention. The most recent work was carried out to recondition the gearbox at a cost of £1,700, with £2,700 worth of mechanical attention carried out during the summer of 2022.

John has also provided a rundown of the work carried out prior to this, which includes the reconditioning of the engine, new driveshafts, rebuilt electrics, and new wheels. windscreen, stainless steel exhausts and box, water pump repair kit, new carpets and burr walnut dashboard and re-chromed bumpers. There are also invoices that have come from Stag specialists; Tony Hart. The car has also been recently inspected by Stag specialist Enginuity in Acton.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
