Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

The Stag offers that classic 70s appeal with its great-looking bodywork and V8 burble - it's sure to turn heads wherever you go.

The Triumph Stag is a 2+2 sports tourer produced between 1970- 1978 by the British Triumph Motor Company and styled by Giovanni Michelotti, an Italian designer and one of the most prolific designers of sports cars working with companies such as Ferrari, Lancia, Maserati and of course, Triumph. Envisioned as a luxury sports car, it was designed to compete directly with the Mercedes-Benz SL. Packing a punch with its 3.0L V8 which offers 145BHP and a top speed of 120MPH.

This Stag comes to market from ~1 year of ownership and interior restoration by the current owner. It is a cherished example, that has previously been mechanically and cosmetically restored, this car is very much ready for a new owner to enjoy this Summer onwards.

This listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I never imagined myself owning a Triumph Stag, but I'm very proud of the work I've carried out to bring it up to this standard.

John was in the market for a Triumph Stag last year to buy as a retirement project, he found the car at a specialist classic garage in Lymington, it had previously been restored by an experienced craftsman and kept in the garage since, covering only ~2,000 since being restored. The restoration did not just replace panels but ensured they were aligned such that all of the shut lines are consistent and even throughout.

John mentions "This car really fitted in well as the body and engine/transmission were already restored but there were lots of details within the interior that required attention. The car is very authentic to a production car without modification other than the addition of an electric cooling fan which I have fitted to supplement the visco-coupled fan - just as an additional peace of mind". Now John is retired he is looking for a project that requires much more work to keep him occupied. John will be on hand to answer any questions on the car in the comments below.

Exterior

The Stag is a favourite among classic car enthusiasts, the 2+2 convertible style was an instant hit in the 70s and still loved now.

Wheels and Tyres

The Kent alloy wheels finished in black gives this Stag a lot of character. On this example, the wheels appear well cared for, with no sign of any obvious damage to any of the spokes from our observation.

The wheels are fitted with Michelin MXV-P tyres and these appear to also be in great condition with a good amount of tread remaining and no obvious cracking or signs of age to the sidewalls.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this Stag looks in great condition, with all the panel gaps around the car looking to align very well, thanks to the previous restoration and careful ownership in the mid 90s. During our visit we didn't spot any obvious dings down the flanks of the car, everything looking crisp and sharp while standing very straight and true.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in this iconic Triumph "Old English White" (code 19). The paint is finished to a high standard, with even coverage and colour across each panel.

Again, we have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this Stag example looks great and in line with the ownership and restoration, we didn't notice any chips, cracks, or discolouration on our visit. The window seals look good too and in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

The chrome bumpers, grille, door handles, and window surrounds all look in good condition too, we did notice some minor pitting to both bumpers when we got close.

Take a look at the exterior photos to also see the convertible hood in good condition with no tears or rips. John very rarely drives the car with the hood up, only in dry weather.

Interior

Recently renovated to a high standard, the Stag offers an elegant cabin with black leather to contrast against the classic Old English White paintwork.

Seats and Carpets

John has spent many hours over the past year renovating the interior of the car to the condition you see today, he's addressed the seats and carpets throughout. The black vinyl seats look good, and with the door cards and black carpets it's a similar story. Please take a look at the extensive media for a detailed view of the cabin.

Dashboard

The dashboard is covered in a lovely wood veneer finish and presents seven black gauges to the driver.

The dashboard in this Stag shows no signs of any major damage or scuffs, just some light paint wear and patina around the dials. No warning lights were displayed, and the odometer showed a reading of ~88,965 miles on our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

An original Triumph Stag wheel is fitted, with a black leather grip. The original steering wheel presents in great condition in line with the condition of this car, the black gearstick with overdrive switch looks good too. Take a look at the image gallery to see the detail.

Mechanics

This smooth V8 is a natural cruiser, the 3.0L powers this sleek roadster in speed and comfort on every journey.

Engine and Gearbox

Please watch the "On the Road" video to see the car being started from cold, then run when up to temperature. On our short trip out, John operated the gears and overdrive with ease.

The car had a complete rebuild as part of the extensive restoration in 96/97, and it was last serviced ~300 miles ago in 2016, whereby the heads were skimmed and fitted with new plugs. In addition to this in the past, the car has been fitted with Lumenation ignition, and an electric cooling fan to help keep on top of typical niggles you can get with the Stag.

Suspension and Brakes

John reports the car operates just as you'd expect, on the drive out we didn't observe anything untoward. The brakes have been maintained as required, working satisfactorily. Check out the gallery to see the underside, a clean looking example.

The Drive

John mentions the Triumph V8 engine sounds great and drives well. The car inspires confidence whilst cornering with 'tight' power-assisted steering. The manual transmission and overdrive are smooth and he mentions the Stag is such a pleasure to drive with the roof down.

The Triumph Stag is a very practical 70s sports GT, with 3.0L of power at your disposal, and enough room for the family, what more could you want on a British Summer's day.

Electrics and Other

John reports all the electrics working, including electric windows, dashboard lights and overdrive.

The car is fitted with an additional electric cooling fan as mentioned previously to help keep on top of the heat the V8 produces.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market with a fresh interior renovation and a bare metal restoration in previous ownership - this practical 70s GT is ready to be used and enjoyed this summer.

The car is coming out of a ~1-year ownership with John. The car has bags of originality and has been restored by keen enthusiasts to a very high standard over its life, the car is now ready to be enjoyed and loved by a like-minded classics enthusiast. Take a look at this history and paperwork media to see the previous MOT reports, servicing and parts this Stag has received.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. Just wanted to say lovely looking car. I’m in Peterborough, so it’s too far to have a look. By the way, having a MOT will always help in selling a car.
