Introduction

Glyn Parry
Vehicle Consigner and Photographer

Powerful, luxurious and above all beautiful – The Stag brought a new dimension to the Triumph stable

The handiwork of Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti, the Triumph Stag was launched in 1970 and was like nothing else from a British manufacturer at the time. Based on a shortened Triumph 2000 floorpan the four seat, two door luxury tourer was Triumphs first unitary construction sports car. Strong, luxurious, and powerful the Stag was a hit with the public and met with critical acclaim. Elegant looks, smooth power delivery and an opulent interior resulted in real enthusiasm from the motoring press. All original Stags were powered by Triumphs own 3 Litre V8 and offered with either automatic or manual transmission with overdrive. Stags are immensely popular classics today and of the 17,819 originally produced for the UK market around 8,300 remain registered with the DVLA – a remarkable survival rate of around 46%.

This Stag comes to auction from ~11 years in the same family. It's a lovely example in "Leyland White" over a beautiful back interior, this car delivers the power via a 3-speed automatic gearbox. Restored by the current owner, and having covered less than ~1,000 miles in ~13 years, it's a great example which is ready to go.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Steve the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I’ve always loved Stags – the look, the luxury and of course that wonderful V8 soundtrack!

Steve bought this car back in 2012 as a project, he tells us “It needed full restoration, but it was just the specification I was looking for and I just love the colour. I did most of the work myself and used specialists where required”. He goes on to say “I’m delighted with the result, and it drives superbly – there are still a few things that can be done to improve the car but it is ready to drive and enjoy”.

As well as his own passion for the model, it rubbed off on his family “My daughter absolutely loved the Car, so I gave it to her for her 30th birthday in 2016. We’re now finding that neither of us use it as much as we should so time for another owner to enjoy it”. Steve will be happy to answer any questions about his car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Iconic, stylish and elegant – the Stag holds a unique place in the Triumph family.

Wheels and Tyres

The 14-inch alloy wheels have been fully refurbished as part of the restoration. There are no significant kerb marks, and the black painted inserts look in great condition. The tyres look in generally good condition with only very minor cracking to the front offside outer wall visible. All appear to have good tread remaining as pictured.

Bodywork

The car stands straight, shut lines look good and doors, bonnet and boot all open and close exactly as they should. There appears to be no distortion on the panels and the hood opens and closes properly. Steve confirms the hood, fitted 7 years ago, is leak free.

The car come with a fully refurbished hard top (and stand) which is in good condition with no visible corrosion and a new headlining. The heated rear window still works and shows the original supplier of the car. The vinyl is showing some age to the edges where it could benefit from being glued down again. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The "Leyland White" paintwork looks absolutely stunning and appears even and consistent with a deep shine right across the car. There is a small crack on the bonnet and are one or two age related marks, but we really did have to search for them. Overall, the standard of paintwork on this car is very good.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen, side windows, mirrors and lenses all appear in good shape with no issues to note. All the brightwork was fully refurbished by Castle Chrome in Wednesbury where possible, only the main bumpers were replaced with stainless steel aftermarket versions and look great. The badging looks great with just a few signs of ageing.

Interior

Hallmark wooden dash and clear unmarked dials – this could only be a Triumph.

Seats and Carpets

The black vinyl seats present really well, and we could see no rips, tears or indentations. Steve advises that these are the original seat coverings, and apart from a slight softening of the padding, they have held up remarkably.

Carpets, renewed as part of the restoration still look in very good condition as does the remaining interior trim. Please take the time to look at the hi resolution images and video of the interior so that you can assess the condition for yourself.

Dashboard

The classic Triumph wooden dash looks in great shape with no signs of cracking or delamination. The Smith’s gauges present really well, and all switches, dials and gauges appear unbroken. Steve assures us everything works exactly as it should.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original style, 3 spoke, slotted steering wheel still presents really well, and the Stag branded centre boss look great. The automatic gear selector lever is in good condition, as is the wood finished centre console. Do check out the videos and photos – we don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

Mechanics

With ~145BHP from the 3.0L V8, said to deliver a factory specified top speed of 117MPH and 0-60 in 10.5 seconds – not bad, even by today’s standards.

Engine and Gearbox

As pictured, the engine bay could benefit from being brought up to the standard of the rest of the car. Steve acknowledges he’s not an “engine guy” getting any work in that area done by the professionals. That said we could see no signs of damage or leaks and, on our cold start the lovely V8 fire up willingly, settled down to a steady idle and emissions looked clear.

The car is fitted with Lumenition electronic ignition and also has a larger capacity radiator fitted to help keep the Stag cool. Steve confirms the car has never overheated in his ownership. On the road, the automatic gearbox went through the gears as required, watch the video to see and hear the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The Stag has uprated drilled and grooved discs fitted, as well as Spax adjustable suspension to improve handling. On our brief test drive with Steve the car pulled up quickly and evenly and we could detect no sign of pull, vibration or judder. Steve mentions that the car has recently had a new brake master cylinder fitted.

The Drive

The Stag was comfortable and smooth with that classic V8 providing the perfect soundtrack. Changes through the 3-speed automatic gearbox were smooth and progressive and the car felt surefooted and planted. Take a look at the 'On the Road" video to share in the brief drive we took with Steve.

Electrics and Other

While electrics are relatively uncomplicated on these cars, Steve confirmed everything works exactly as it should to his knowledge. The car is fitted with a Radiomobile aftermarket Radio/CD which we understand is in good working order. Steve mentions that the car has a new battery fitted, and also to note that the heater controls all work fine but are a little on the stiff side so could benefit from adjustment.

History and Paperwork

Beautifully presented inside and out, restored in the the current ownership and coming to market from ~11 years ownership, this is a fantastic example of this iconic, classic luxury tourer.

This example has been beautifully restored but still has a few jobs for the enthusiastic owner. Included in the paperwork are receipts for the restoration, old MOT certificates and tax discs as well a receipt detailing work carried out in 2022. Also included is a memory stick with digital images of the restoration work.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
