Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

Elegant and powerful British motoring with Italian design heritage from arguably one of the most creative car designers - the Triumph Stag is a truly iconic '70s sports car.

Launched in 1970 the Triumph Stag met with approval from both the motoring press and the public. With styling provided by the talented Giovanni Michelotti, one of the most prolific designers of sports cars in the 20th century with design contributions to Ferrari and Maserati. The Triumph is a stylish 2+2, two door convertible and was like nothing else from a British manufacturer at the time.

The sports tourer was produced between 1970 and 1978 and packed a punch with its 3.0L V8. The Stag offered up ~145BHP, a 0-60 time in ~10.5 seconds and top speed of ~117MPH. The Stag is a great-looking and great-sounding British sports car with a huge following, which is easy to see why when looking over the car.

Showing a clean bill of health on its previous 4 MOT tests and under ~1,000 miles travelled in the last 5 years, with ~10 years under the current ownership. The Stag has benefitted from a new ignition switch, new radiator and a new exhaust and rear silencer in recent years as well as an retro fitted CD player, alarm system, refurbished wheels and tyres from previous ownership.

This example is setup and ready to drive for its future owner.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Roger the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Big on Triumph cars and classic British motoring, the Stag was a natural choice for it's owner with its stunning looks and performance.

As a fan of classic cars for many years, a Triumph was high on Roger, the current owners, wishlist - he told us,"I've always wanted a Stag, it's a stunning looking car and I absolutely love the sound of it".

Most of the work carried out on the Triumph was completed before Roger's ownership, but has benefitted from the previous keepers attention and upkeep on the car - Roger said, "I've had much less time to spend with the car recently, I love the car and giving it my full attention, but I'm finding less time to be able to invest in it now".

With a house move and less garage space for his future home, Roger has taken the tough decision to put the car to market for a new owner to appreciate.

Should any questions be required, Roger will be able to answer these in the section below.

Exterior

With its iconic Italian looks and styling, these cars are instantly recognisable and very practical sporty British classics.

Wheels and Tyres

The Stag is fitted with a set of '70s era 14" Kent Stag wheels. These are in great condition with only a few minor marks noted having been refurbished in October 2010.

The Triumph is complete with a set of Hercules MR IV Touring Radial tyres with a spec of 195/75. The condition of tyres looks good overall with no obvious cracking or major signs of major wear. The cream white sidewall of the tyres looked smart and complimented the exterior nicely.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of this Stag and a closer look at the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

Overall this looks a nice example with the shut lines and panel gaps looking good. We do apologise as our photographer left the passenger door slightly open in some of the exterior shots - you'll see these at the beginning of the media file.

Both doors and both boot sections open and close well - we noted the drivers side door sat a little out on the base of the door shut but we had to look fairly closely to see this.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a lovely coat of white, the paint looks good on this example. The paint is even in finish and coat on each panel and shines well especially in sunny weather such as on our visit day - making the photography a little tricky.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen section, side windows and mirrors all appear in good condition and we could see no sign of scratching or chips on the main glass sections. The window seals, chrome bumpers, grille, door, boot handles look good too and in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

Door cards in the cabin area showed in good condition with door pockets sitting well against the panels. The soft top roof looks in respectable condition given the car is approaching its ~50th birthday, but we did note that the rear window zipper was broken which will be worth a closer look by the future owner.

Interior

The cabin looks in lovely shape with many of its original features intact - walnut burr fascia and iconic Stag branding bring the interior to life.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are finished with black vinyl with the material still looking great across the coverings. All seats in the car look in good condition with little sign of major wear to the bolster sections - overall, this was a nicely presented interior.

We noted that there was a slight tear in the back section of the rear seats and a minor nick on the drivers seat edge. Although not major areas of concern, a couple of points worth observing by the future owner.

Looking over the carpet sections, the mats showed to be in good condition, and looking underneath these, the main floor sections showed without concern. The carpets look good but would benefit from a deep clean in some areas.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

Dashboard

With no signs of any major scuffs the drivers section shows nicely.

The original dials are presented nicely, with clear visibility and no signs of fogging or real notable wear. We are also assured that the switches and controls are also fully functional and are in good condition with minimal signs of wear.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is free from any major wear but there was a slight mark on the left hand side, but still very presentable, with its smart 3 spoke setup and iconic branding in the centre.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

The Triumph V8 experience is deeply satisfying; a powerful 3.0L V8 block gives a great engine note with a twin exhaust further enhancing the sound.

Engine and Gearbox

We noted no issues on the start up of the car with the engine and exhaust running smoothly when we visited. The car drives well with its transmission working smoothly once out on the road. We noted no sign of the gears sticking or hanging in its drive modes.

We took the car on a short drive and it went through the motions without issue - please watch the video to see the detail and the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

On the drive out, the current owner Roger, took us around some local roads - we heard no major knocks, bangs or unwanted noises from the suspension and overall the car performed as to be expected with no observed issues.

Roger mentions the brakes and suspension provide an enjoyable journey with the kind of stopping power you'd expect. The brakes felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey and brought the car to a stop without a problem.

The Drive

A very practical '70s sports GT, with a 3.0L V8 capable of delivering some great performance.

The Stag is genuinely comfortable, a relatively rare factor for the era, and provides a good amount of space for both drivers and passengers alike.

Electrics and Other

Being a '70s car the setup is relatively simple in the cabin area. The CD player system had been removed before our review so we were unable to test this feature when visiting the car.

Roger let us know that he has had no issues with the electrical elements on the car and to the best of his knowledge, everything was working as it should do.

History and Paperwork

With ~10 years of current ownership under its belt and travelling fewer than ~1,000 miles in the last 5 years, this Stag is ready to drive and well set for its next journey ahead.

Registered new on 02.04.1974, this car has been loved by the current owner for the past ~10 years. The Stag has benefitted from previous work by its past owners and has had a new radiator fitted by its current owner in 2022.

In June 2021 the Stag was checked against over heating with its anti freeze topped up and had a new throttle link, in June 2020 the headlight bulbs were replaced and levels topped up. The Triumph had its levels topped up again in June 2019. In June 2018, the car had a new exhaust mounted and rear silencer and, at the same time, the rear shocks were cleaned and checked for leaks, a new ignition switch was fitted, carburettors were rebuilt, balanced and retuned at a cost of over ~£300.

Previous ownership covered off new boot boards in 2012 and in October 2010, new headlamps, Autowatch alarm system, new air filter casing, new radiator and oil cooler, new front bumper and indicators, new brake cables and diff oil, updated CD player, four new tyres and refurbished wheels were upgraded all of which cost over ~£4,000.

Should there be any questions required, Roger would be happy to answer these in the section below.
