Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Consigner and Editor

The accommodation for four people and the silky smooth V8 make it an ideal classic.

The Stag was a clever upmarket shift to align Triumph to compete against European luxury grand tourers. Unique in its execution, the Stag is a full four-seater, with a usable boot and a Targa roof which combines body strength integrity with the pleasures of open-top motoring. The design language was unmistakably stylish, conveying elegance and an element of aggression. Furthermore, Triumph's reputation for building charismatic sports cars translated perfectly to a Michelotti-styled V8 cruiser. With fully independent suspension, and refined driving manners the Stag was one of the most comfortable cars of its era. Best suited as a brisk effortless drive, rather than a performance car, it is a natural born-cruiser.

Exceptionally well presented, with a 2017 body and mechanical restoration under its belt, this 1974 Triumph Stag is finished in "Carmine Red", with a spotless tan leather interior. Finished to an impressive level, the car has seen several mechanical upgrades to ensure it runs as well as possible. This Stag is sold with invoices outlining thousands of pounds spent since the late 90s, it is MOT/road-tax exempt and comes with two keys.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Rebuilt and well-maintained, this Stag is an impressive piece of kit, and now everyone wants one...

Following its standout appearance on The Grand Tour, the Triumph Stag has shaken off its old reputation, now sparking renewed demand as enthusiasts rediscover its classic British charm and V8 roar. Now it seem, everyone is trying to get their hands on one and emulate James May!

Originally listed on Trade Classics back in 2021, it was bought by an enthusiast from Cardiff, where it has since seen continual maintenance work and less than 300 miles of use. Acquired by a Classic Car specialist in Sawbridgeworth, it has been checked over by a classic car accessor and given a positive bill of health. John will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

A lovely exterior presentation is backed up by its high-quality restoration and careful ownership since.

Wheels and Tyres

The refurbished GKN Kent Alloys are in great shape and free from any signs of age or any major damage.

Fitted with matching Vredestein Sprint Classic tyres, they date from 2017 and they all show healthy and even tread. View the images to see the wheels up close.

Bodywork

The condition of the metalwork, having been subject to a restoration in 2017, offers any potential buyer very little to worry about. The panel fit is flush with decent shut lines, and all doors open and close with ease. We didn't spot any discernible panel damage or corrosion. The underside, engine bay, boot floor, wheel wells, jacking points, and suspension mounts are solid.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The "Carmine Red" paint has been well applied, with an even coverage and consistent hue. The paint's lustre is positive with no notable marks or chips and no evidence of poor finishing or runs.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is generally in good condition complemented with decent seals but we noted a slight marks on the windscreen. No issues were spotted on the headlamps or lenses. The trim is of a high standard and well-mounted to the body. Both bumpers were professionally re-chromed in 2011 and still look good.

The canvas roof is cleanly presented and has a good fit and raises and lowers with no issues. The rear screen has a mild fold mark but is otherwise in good shape. On the inside of the hood, there are marks noted on the inside C pillar fabric.

Interior

Sumptuous and lavish, the cabin has been professionally finished to a high standard.

Seats and Carpets

The comfy tan leather seats are in excellent condtion, having benefited from a complete interior refurb.

The carpets are clean with no signs of dampness. The same goes for the rest of the interior trim, door cards and furnishings.

Dashboard

The dashboard and facia are presented neatly, with no issues spotted on the walnut burl, dials or switches. Some controls appear original, and all are said to work as they should.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The Springdalex sourced wood steering wheel and original gear lever are in great order, concluding a pleasing impression of a well-finished cabin.

Mechanics

The temptation to floor the throttle just to hear the V8's bassy burble is irresistible!

Engine and Gearbox

The engine has been treated to an extensive overhaul in recent years and has seen sensible upgrades to ensure it runs as well as possible. This includes an electric water pump conversion, a new aluminium header tank and a bespoke radiator. The car also runs happily on unleaded fuel. The warm start process was trouble-free, the engine firing up immediately with no unwanted noises heard from the engine, as the dashboard warning light remained off. There was some initial black smoke from the exhaust, which suggests a tuning issue but once the engine was running and warmed up the car remained smoke-free - please watch the On the Road video to see this. No fluid leaks were noted on the day.

As to be expected for an engine that has seen over ~£10,000 worth of spending, it is amongst one the cleanest Stag V8s we’ve seen. The exhaust system appears to be a recent fitting. The manual gearbox operates well, with slick changes and no reported issues with the overdrive. The clutch was confirmed to have a positive biting point.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension was overhauled in 2017 as part of the restoration, including new polyurethane bushes. The ride is smooth and compliant, with no wallowing or unwanted noises from the wheels.

The car's braking was also completely overhauled in 2017 and offers a good pedal feel. We didn’t hear any grinding or squeaks from the wheels. The steering wheel remained true upon gentle braking.

The Drive

The 3.0-litre V8 engine pulls well, smoothly powering through the gears. Initially, the engine showed slight hesitancy but once warmed up there were no undulations. It has been proven to be reliable and starts up without any issues when the engine is warm, the cooling fan only kicking in when needed.

On the road, the power delivery is instantaneous and turbine-smooth. Cruising beautifully at 40-50MPH, the garage confirmed that there were no issues in terms of oil pressure or engine temperature. The steering is compliant with reasonable sharpness and was vibration-free throughout the drive.

Electrics and Other

The car has an additional digital control cooling console for added peace of mind. A retro-style DAB radio and electric clock are also fitted. John told us everything was working, to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

Presented in excellent condition and sold by us in 2021, the car has seen two restorations in 25 years, the most recent overhaul from 2018 is of a superb standard, a chance to get your hands on a good one.

First registered at a Somerset Triumph dealer in August 1974, the car has retained much of its original spec including the distinctive BL Carmine Red hue. It has a big file of invoices and MOT certificates going back to the late 1990s. There are old V5s tracing back owners back to 1990. Subject to a restoration in 1999, the car has plenty of invoices for maintenance and work up to its most recent restoration in 2017. Much of the floor pan was replaced at the cost of around ~£10,000, with Stag Specialists EJ Ward Motors carrying out a complete engine overhaul and additional bodywork at an expenditure of ~£9,400. Further spending of almost £5,000 has been carried out on the car since then, including trim, engine, service and repair items. Last serviced ~200 miles ago, it is MOT and Road Tax-exempt and comes with two keys.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house. This is an auction on behalf of a trade seller and normal auction rules apply, i.e. there is no warranty, no return policy and bids are binding with more info in our terms and conditions.

Hi, does it come with a cover?

I note on the cold start that there was quite a bit of smoke emitted at the tailpipe. Given the significant work done in the past (2017) to overhaul the engine for this very reason, is there any known reason for it to smoke again now?

Hi John. Would you consider putting the car through an MOT before collection by the winning bidder?
