Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

A classic British convertible from the 1970s, well-known for its stylish design and V8 engine.

The Stag was a clever upmarket shift to align Triumph with European luxury grand tourers. Unique in its execution, the Stag is a full four-seater with a usable boot and a Targa roof that combines body strength and integrity with the pleasures of open-top motoring. The design language was unmistakably stylish, conveying elegance with an element of aggression. Triumph's reputation for building charismatic sports cars translated perfectly into this Michelotti-styled V8 cruiser. With fully independent suspension and refined driving manners, the Stag was one of the most comfortable cars of its era. Best suited for brisk, effortless driving rather than performance, it is a natural-born cruiser.

This beautiful example was sourced for Peter, ~4 years ago, by the Chairman of the Triumph Stag Owners Club. Undergoing a restoration in 2015, after a long period of enthusiast ownership, the Stag is in excellent, usable condition and ready to be enjoyed. It has a current MOT valid until 22.09.2025, even though it is of course MOT exempt.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Peter the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Spotted daily as a schoolboy heading past the factory gates, Peter knew he would one day own a Stag.

The Stag has been on Peter's wish list for several years; as an iconic grand tourer, it offers the perfect mix of style and performance.

Having owned the car for four years and not getting as much use out of it as he would like, Peter has decided it's time to let someone else take over the pleasure of owning this British classic and preserve it for many more years to come.

Peter will be happy to answer any questions below.

Exterior

With a restoration carried out in 2015, the Stag is in great shape and the perfect '70s colour.

Wheels and Tyres

The iconic Stag wheels have been refurbished - there is a small amount of water ingress under the lacquer in a couple of places, but they still present very well.

The Mohawk tyres are all matching, with a good amount of tread remaining.

Please see the image gallery for a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

Walking around the Triumph Stag, the panels appear to fit well with even gaps. In certain lights, you can spot some repairs from the restoration, but nothing excessive.

The roof is relatively new, in excellent condition, and fits well. It also folds down nicely into the storage area.

We’ve highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos. Please take the time to review all media files to assess the car’s condition for yourself.

Paint

Finished in the original Magenta colour, the paintwork presents very well from front to rear.

The images were taken from various angles to show the car as you would see it in person. Please fully assess these high-resolution images and videos to form your own opinion of the paint’s condition.

Glass and Trim

All windows are in good condition, with no noticeable scratches, and the seals appear to be in good order. The plastic rear window is also in good condition, with no creasing or discolouration.

The headlights and indicator lenses are all in good condition, along with the rear lights. There is minor light tarnishing on a couple of the chrome trim pieces, but nothing excessive.

Interior

Recently retrimmed in high-quality leather, the interior is a beautiful place to be.

Seats and Carpets

The original seats and door cards have been beautifully retrimmed in black leather, all in excellent condition.

Throughout the car, the carpets have been replaced with high-quality replacements that include a built-in heel pad.

Inside the boot is also in excellent condition, and the spare wheel is present, located under the false floor.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in excellent condition, with no splits or cracks on the top or the wooden fascia. The instruments are working correctly, and the odometer shows a reading of ~70,857 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for high-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original leather steering wheel is in good condition, with no signs of excessive wear, along with the original gear knob, which also holds the overdrive switch and is working as it should.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

It's the ultimate engine for a true British sports car - and it’s been rebuilt.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting the Stag, the V8 fires up without hesitation and sounds fantastic. It has been fitted with electronic ignition and an operational cooling fan, ensuring the V8 runs smoothly without overheating.

The gear change is smooth, and the car is equipped with overdrive, which works correctly.

Peter told us there is a very slight whine noise from the transmission, but this has been present during his ownership and does not appear to affect the driving experience.

Suspension and Brakes

On the road, the Stag is great fun to drive. No knocks or bangs are coming from any corner of the car.

The car comes to a stop in a straight line with no juddering through the pedal.

The Drive

What a great classic to be in! The '70s colour stands out perfectly; the sound of the V8 is music to your ears, and the whole experience of driving a British classic is a joy with this 1974 Triumph Stag.

Electrics and Other

All switchgear in the car appears to be working correctly.

There is a small amount of wear on some of the switches, but nothing that couldn’t be easily replaced if desired.

History and Paperwork

An original owner's manual is included, along with a collection of invoices showing enthusiastic care over the years.

The British Heritage certificate confirms when the car was built, matching the original specifications. Comes with its original handbook, Haynes manual and essential invoices include work done during the restoration and the engine rebuild. The Stag is MOT exempt but has a current MOT valid until 22.09.2025, it also comes with some previous MOT certificates.

This is a lovely example of a British classic, enthusiastically owned by Peter for the past ~4 years, and now looking for the following custodian to take over the reins of this iconic Triumph.

We’ve conducted our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5, and a professional history check via HPI. This check highlights if the car has been stolen, recorded in an accident, or has outstanding finance, although it does not include a mileage history check.

We’ve summarised our view of the car based on the seller’s information. However, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the vehicle in high-resolution detail. Please take the time to review everything in this listing to make your own assessment. Viewings are also welcome—please get in touch to arrange a suitable time. We will need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there’s anything you’re unsure about, no matter how small, please ask the owner in the comments section below before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win—just like in a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
