Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

A stylish V8-powered cruiser - the Stag is an ever popular British classic.

Triumph’s V8-powered 2+2 classic has come full circle from its BL days, where its potential was never capitalised upon. Created to take on the continental playboy cars of the era, it's no surprise that the cars enduring appeal has become stronger over the years, thanks to the dedication of specialists and owners. As Triumph's flagship GT it offered comfort for 4 people with the added bonus of open-top motoring.

This 1974 car was bought from a classic automobile specialist and used primarily for summer rides and shows. It has been owned by its present owner for 9 years and has the desired manual gearbox with overdrive. The car has seen a viscous fan installed, and been subject of an engine rebuild as part of full restoration in the mid-90s.

Both inside and out, the car is immaculately presented and runs well. This car has been stored for some time by the current owner, and so a little light mechanical checks and recommissioning where needed will get this car ready for the shows again.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren Rungasamy after meeting Garry the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

People constantly stop me and ask if it's for sale - it's never been until now.

Bought as a retirement present to himself, Garry specifically sought a well restored and mechanically sound example to take to the odd show and use during the summer. Garaged since he bought the car but several factors, including poor health and the purchase of a motorhome, has meant that the Stag has been used less in recent years.

Garry will be more than happy to answer your questions below.

Exterior

Handsomely poised, the Michelotti designed Stag still turns heads and so it should - it looks gorgeous.

Wheels and Tyres

The Duraturn tyres are all relatively recent, having all been fitted in 2019. As a result, they're all in good condition with well above the minimal tread.

The alloys were restored about 15 years ago and are very presentable -they are free from damage with no significant corrosion.

Bodywork

The car was subject to what appears to be a thorough restoration in 2005, and it has retained its condition very well. The structural aspects, such as the engine bay, sill, inner wings, floor pan, boot and hood look very solid, with the body panels in great order, with just a few minor blemishes noticed coming through on the rear arches.

The body is straight with no dents, with all of the doors opening and closing without issues. The panels sit well and are all flush.

The canvas roof and T-bar is in good condition with no distracting damage.

Paint

The paint finish has been very well applied, with a very good lustre throughout the evenly applied and glossy body. There is no evidence of overspray or poor paint preparation. There are a small number of chips on the door edges and a few scratches but nothing that has penetrated too deeply.

Just a few minor cracks were noticed on the seams in between the panels (e.g lower wings) and handful of bubbles are also evident on the off-side rear wing.

Glass and Trim

The Sundym tinted glass is in good condition with no significant laminate damage and no chips or repairs were observed. The windscreen was replaced in 2005. The door and glass rubbers are in good condition with no evidence of any water ingress.

The chrome fittings are in good condition too, with some suggestions of wear observed on the bumpers, but generally free from damage.

Interior

Stag interiors were very well designed and focused on the driver's needs.

Seats and Carpets

The Ambla vinyl seats are in great condition, with limited suggestions of age and set the scene for the positive presentation of the interior. There were slight traces of mould observed, but this is not likely to have been a long term issue. The carpets (including the boot) are in good condition, with no issues and all were dry.

The door cards are tidy with no scuffing.

Dashboard

The dashboard unit is in good condition, with no significant issues in regards to damage. The top of the facia is good, with just some expected wear and damage observed on the veneer finish. The dials and switches are generally good, with some minor suggestions of age. The pedals are good.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in good condition, although there is a nick at 2 O'Clock.

The gear stick is good, with the gaiter in good condition.

Mechanics

The engine still sounds superb with the twin Strombergs on song.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine started instantly and idled well. There are no suggestions of overheating and it is said to maintain good oil pressure. The exhaust is in good physical and working order, with no excess smoke or blowing observed.

Prior to the car being laid up, the engine and gearbox function was said to work well - the fuel pump has recently been replaced.

On our visit the car couldn't be moved due to the flywheel sticking, as the car hadn't been moved for a while. However, the good news is Garry has since managed to free the flywheel and the clutch is engaging now, we've added film of the car moving on and off the drive, watch the video to see and hear the car running.

Suspension and Brakes

As is the usual case with a car that's been stood for a while, the brakes were a bit sticky, some light refurbishment would be a nice job for the new owner. When the car was in use, Garry said they performed well.

The Drive

The Triumph V8 has a much-maligned reputation, but the engine runs well and was said to be reliable when used. Its cruising ability outweighs any sporting ability, but this is a car that doesn't need to be hurried. Drop the roof down, bring the family and find its sweet spot.

Electrics and Other

A handful of dashboard functions need to be resolved, including the function of the fuel gauge and the radio. The owner lived without both in his company, ensuring that there was always over half a tank of fuel and who needs a radio when you have the burble of that glorious V8 soundtrack?

The hood lowering and raising was straightforward and functions exactly as expected.

History and Paperwork

The quality of the restoration is still very evident in its finish, and with a few weekends work this Stag will be ready to take to shows again.

Registered new at a Surrey dealer in 1974, the car history is unknown up until the mid-'90s when it was subject to an extensive restoration. The body was fully stripped down and repainted from bare metal, with the running gear subject to a total overhaul. The engine was also believed to have been refurbished more recently in 2005, with continuous engine components added over the next few years. The car was sold to the present owner by the Fernhurst Motor Company in Hampshire in 2012, and it hasn't been driven much more than 200 miles since then, with the majority of that time stored in the garage.

We've actioned checks on; Seller ID, V5C, HPi.

Hi there,
Could you let me know if the stag leaks oil on the floor when left standing. What improvements would you make if you kept the car (in order of priority). During your ownership has there been any paint or damage?
Regards
Chris

Hi, Can you advice please if there is a current MOT & is the car in a roadworthy condition.

Looking through the photographs the boot lid docent appear to close flush or is it just not shut correctly. I also noticed some rust showing through on the front arches is this right through to the inside or surface rust & are there any other areas where rust is more than superficial.

And finally is there a hardtop with it please.

thanks.

Stephen
