Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

This fully restored Stag is one of Michelotti's great masterpieces, powered by a 3.0L V8, not only does the car look great but also it offers an incredible soundtrack.

The Triumph Stag is a 2+2 sports tourer which was produced between 1970 and 1978 by the British Triumph Motor Company and styled by Giovanni Michelotti - a very talented Italian designer.

Packing a punch with its 3.0L V8 it offers ~145BHP and a top speed of 120MPH. The Stag is a great-looking and great-sounding British sports car with a huge following.

This particular car has seen the benefit of a full engine rebuild last year and a body restoration. Owned by Graham for the last 4 years, this example comes with a stack of history, and has recently had a major service with Bridge Classic Cars ready for sale. We think that this 1974 car is one of the best Stags currently on the market.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Graham the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've really enjoyed owning and restoring this Stag, definitely my pride and joy!

Graham bought the car in 2017 and promptly set about restoring the car from head to toe. As well as replacing and working on any bodywork that was required in 2018, the engine has been rebuilt and benefits from upgrades such as an electric water pump conversion kit.

The end result, as the images and video will testify was well worth the effort. Graham, rarely uses the car - only for special occasions or sunny weekends and mentions how it's the centrepiece of his collection, he'll be sad to see it go. Feel free to ask Graham any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

Sharp and sweeping body lines finished in a delightful Carmine Red - a favourite among Triumph fans.

Wheels and Tyres

The cars is fitted with the refurbished Kent Stag alloys which appear in great shape and free from any corrosion.

The wheels are wrapped in period-correct Vredestein Sprint Classic tyres which look to be all in great condition and are dated 2017. Please take a look at the photos for a detailed view.

Bodywork

The body has been subject to comprehensive restoration, and therefore the panel gaps and fit look in excellent form. The car looks free from any signs of damage or rust. The underside and floor pans have been given the attention they deserve and present straight and solid.

The canvas roof has a small blemish where it is attached to the A-pillar but it raises and lowers with no issues. The plastic perspex windows are clear with no obvious signs of evidence of age.

We have captured high resolution photos and videos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the exterior.

Paint

The Carmine paintwork has been applied to the body by professionals, it has a deep lustre throughout and the finish appears excellent. As a result, we didn't observe any blemishes.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look at the paint work.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in great condition with no areas of concern to report, the door and glass rubbers are in line with the rest of the car. The brightwork and trim on the car are very good, with only the smallest blemish on the rear bumper.

Please see the image gallery for more detailed shots.

Interior

Stylish and practical, the Stags interior has been given a fresh overhaul and offers enough space for all the family with luggage.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are finished in cream leather, perfect for use when the roof is down. The seats have been refurbished during Graham's ownership to a very high standard as you can see in the images.

The door cards appear in very good condition, with no evidence of sagging material. The carpets have worn well with no major damage noticed.

Dashboard

The dashboard looks in great overall condition with the original dials, switches, and walnut burl showing the character of the car.

The switches and controls are also fully functional and are in good condition with minimal sign of wear.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The wood trimmed steering wheel is fitted and the gear stick with overdrive appears in great condition with no signs of damage or significant wear. These are items that are likely to have been replaced over time on this example.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed shots.

Mechanics

The main attraction is the Stags beating heart, a mighty 3.0L V8 block, recently rebuilt as part of the full restoration on this example.

Engine and Gearbox

EJ Ward Motor Engineers and Stag specialists carried out a complete engine overhaul (take a look at the invoices to see all the parts replaced) with an electric water pump conversion, costing total of ~£9,400 last July.

Please watch the mechanical video to see and hear the engine running smoothly. The car started the first time from cold. This car is also fitted with overdrive, making those long drives a doddle. The cars gearbox was rebuilt along with the overdrive at the time of restoration. This car has just been put through a major service with Bridge Classic Cars making it ready for the new owner to enjoy.

Suspension and Brakes

Graham reports the brakes are working very well and just as you'd expect after the restoration this car has received. He mentions the suspension feels good too, no unusual knocks or noises to be noted.

Please view the mechanical photos for a closer look at the underneath of this car.

The Drive

With major work carried out to keep this Triumph Stag the best version it can possibly be, Graham mentions the car is such a pleasure to drive. With the renewed running gear and rebuilt engine, we can imagine getting in and driving to the coast.

Electrics and Other

Electrics are fairly basic as you expect from a car of this era. The car does feature a retro-styled radio - that's all you need on a nice sunny weekend to enjoy yourself in this sporty convertible.

Graham reports all the electrical features are working within the car to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

A UK RHD coming out of 4 years ownership, finished in Carmine Red, this example has had a full restoration including the drivetrain and now presents in excellent condition.
