Introduction

Andrew Taylor
Professional Consignor

Designed by Italian Giovanni Michelotti to compete directly with the German Mercedes Benz SL, the Triumph Stag is as quintessentially English as a car gets, and none the worse for that.

The Triumph Stag took British sports grand tourers to a new level at launch in 1970. It had it all and offered open top motoring to a new, more sophisticated buyer. All Stags were four seater convertibles with a sturdy "T-bar" roll-over hoop providing both body rigidity and safety. The Stag offered a luxurious cabin for four, spacious boot and winning combination of fully lined hard top with canvas hood that stowed completely once down. Definitely a car to cut a dash in and the muscular 3-litre Triumph V8 took care of the "dash" in effortless and refined style.

This example, owned by John, is a real eye-catcher in bright "Carmine Red" over cream leather piped in red. The chrome wire wheels affixed with twin eared spinners really complete the package, ensuring this car turns heads wherever it goes. The burbling, deep V8 exhaust note is a Stag party-piece and this lovely example doesn't disappoint in that respect either.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Andrew after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

From the tender age of seventeen I always hankered after a Stag, it was a joy to finally achieve that dream and I've enjoyed every minute.

John has enjoyed his time with the Stag and is delighted to have finally achieved a boyhood aspiration of owning one. Like many, however, during the trying times of Covid and numerous lock-downs he has just found that the car gets very little use.

He is keen for the car to go to an enthusiastic new owner who will get more use from this classic British sports GT. John will be more than happy to answer your question below.

Exterior

The Stag's design language ticks every box for a sports GT. It looks sporting and purposeful whilst retaining the dignity and upright stance favoured by Triumph loyalists of the day.

Wheels and Tyres

The Stag sits on 14 inch chrome wire wheels affixed in the traditional, and popular, way by twin-eared central chrome spinners. The wheels are in great condition with the rims well protected from kerbs by the period correct high side walls of the tyres. A bit of surface rust is visible on some spokes but this would likely clean off easily with some mildly abrasive specialist cleaner.

The tyres all appear to have plenty of tread remaining. They are Firestone F630s in a 185 R14 H90 configuration.

Bodywork

The bodywork of the Stag presents very well. All panels appear to be free from dents or dings and panel gaps are symmetrical and tight. Doors, boot and bonnet open and shut positively. The drivers' side door handle is a little stiff and may benefit from a dose or two of penetrating fluid.

The black canvas hood appears to be quite new and generally in fine condition. The rear window is clear and un-fogged with no cracks or crazing. During John's tenure a rear quarter panel of the hood has been perforated slightly. It is a small fault and could easily be patched from within to maintain complete weatherproofing.

The original hardtop is in good used condition but there are some small rips in the headlining and some superficial surface rust to the leading edges of the C pillars.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

The Carmine Red paintwork is in good used condition and looks very smart and vibrant overall as pictured. On close inspection there are a couple of duller areas which may respond well to professional mopping and machine polishing. These areas do feature in our photographic and video package so please do study these as part of your appraisal of the car.

The chrome work on the Stag appears to be in excellent condition throughout.

Glass and Trim

The glass and associated trim appears to be in good original condition. There are no apparent areas of de-lamination, fogging or crazing. All in all a fine example.

Interior

The Stag's cabin is just a nice place to be. The generous leather armchairs favour comfort over support but that seems entirely appropriate to the relaxed but capable nature of the car.

Seats and Carpets

It is believed that the interior was re trimmed at some point before John's ownership of the car. The seats are dressed in cream leather with red piping and present in great original condition. There are no signs of rips, tears or discolouration to the leather.

The carpets are a complimentary light-beige colour and are in generally good condition. Given their light colour, some of the edges have become a little discoloured but this only becomes obvious when the carpets are lifted.

Dashboard

The leather dash appears tightly bound. All gauges and dials are clearly legible - the speedometer has lost some black paint on the rim over time. There are some minor marks here and there on the edges of the veneer , but the dash is in a good general condition overall.

Please view the images to see the dashboard in more detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A non-standard, three-spoke alloy and wood steering wheel looks at home in the classy cabin of the stag. The condition of the wheel is good and the smaller than standard diameter and chunky rim help underline the sporting potential of the Stag.

The gear lever is the standard "T-bar" operating the three speed automatic transmission. The shaft of the lever exhibits some surface rust but this would likely clean off with some appropriate metal polish.

John adds that he has the original steering wheel which will be sold with the car.

Please take a look at the interior photos and videos for a closer look.

Mechanics

Rather than using the Buick / Rover 3.5L V8, Triumph went their own way with the finely engineered 3.0L V8. It sounds glorious.

Engine and Gearbox

As you will see in our on the road video the smooth V8 starts well, idles cleanly and pulls strongly. It is a smooth power train with power reaching the rear wheels via the smooth-shifting three-speed automatic transmission.

During our visit and run out in the car, everything seemed to be working as expected and owner, John, reports no known mechanical issues.

Suspension and Brakes

The car's underside appears to be in a good used condition with no areas of concern noted or reported. The brakes operated smoothly and symmetrically during our run out and no unexpected clunks or clonks from the suspension were noticed.

The Drive

Our drive in the Stag was with the hood down. The T-bar roll-over hoop certainly helps the rigidity of the body, often an issue in convertible cars of this era. The Stag feels very tight and surprisingly contemporary in its road manners.

The Stag is really about taking up to four adults and their luggage on comfortable and relaxed journeys in style and with panache. Given that brief, this example delivers in spades with the experience being both enjoyable and memorable.

Electrics and Other

The electrics all seem to be in good working order. We did note that the clock has lost one of its hands, however. Other than that no issues were noticed or reported.

History and Paperwork

As you will see from the MOT history this Stag has been very lightly used over recent years, despite this, there has been robust maintenance in place as witnessed by the paperwork archive.

As you will see from the photographic package, there is a good level of paperwork included with the car. This comprises a current V5 in the name of the owner, numerous hard-copy MOTs and invoices from various stages of the car's history.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
