Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner and Photographer

Top down style with great looks and great sounds, the Triumph Stag is a really enjoyable and usable British classic.

Starting its historic journey envisioned as a luxury sports car, designed to compete directly with its German competition, the Stag was a real piece of luxury for Triumph, offering great interior space, looks, style and performance.

All Stags were four seater convertibles with a sturdy "T-bar" roll-over hoop, providing both body rigidity and safety as well as an optional hard top which is included with this example. With 3.0L, V8 power under the hood, the Stag isn't just a looker, it goes well whilst offering comfort and driving ease with its automatic gearbox.

Finished in an eye catching Java Green this is a real gem of a car. The Stag still carries many of its original parts and features and boasts an exterior restoration carried out at the workshop of a Triumph Stag Club member (owner estimate equates to around ~£30k worth of work) and the car is thought to have covered ~8,200 miles since an engine rebuild over 20 years ago. This is a fine example of a really sleek and stylish Triumph and something absolutely not to be missed, coming to market from ~39 year ownership with its matching hard top.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting June the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

With its sleek looks, style and performance, this Stag is a real head turner for all the right reasons.

Having been a big part of the family for many years the Stag is a car that carries many fond memories. The love for the car is reflected back in the care and attention that has been lavished on the car as part of a considerate restoration project. With the engine being reconditioned in 1997 the Stag has very few miles on the clock all things considered. Equally pleasing is the efforts with the body overhaul carried out by the Triumph Stag Club in 2015, with these points combined the current owner estimates around £30k has been spent on bringing the car up to the standard that it's at now.

Over ~27 years of ownership shows this car still means a lot to its owner; "The Triumph always attracts lots of admirers when I take it out on the road, it's such a smooth and effortless ride and has a lovely engine sound." With different priorities to focus on now, June lets us know "I feel the time has come for someone else to enjoy the car as we still do". June will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments below.

Exterior

Gorgeous Java Green paintwork with beautiful chrome, it's a look that is guaranteed to turn heads and gain admirers.

Wheels and Tyres

A full set of Falken Sincera tyres sit on the lovely set of reconditioned 14" Kent wheels. The wheels looked to be in excellent condition and looked great across all four corners of the car. Date coded from 2014, the tyres show nicely and offer a respectable amount of tread on them.

Take a look over the exterior gallery section for a close up view of the wheels and tyres on the Stag.

Bodywork

Such an iconic car in Britain, a great amount of pride and time has been given to this example which shows in its quality. Looking at the wheel arches these showed in great condition, and other panels too, this car having had any corrosion cut out as part of the restoration in 2015. There is an extensive CD of pictures of the work, lots of which have been added to the "History" gallery. Overall the shut lines and panels look to be in great condition. We did note when looking closely at the rear of the car that the boot lid sits slightly higher on the nearside section.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the gallery section for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The stand out colour of "Java Green" really looks the part on the Triumph, with a lovely looking finish around the car we had to look quite closely to spot any major markings. The car had an engine out respray, the hard top painted as part of this too, in 2015. You can see photos of the work in the "History" gallery. A small section on the nearside rear quarter panel showed a slight blemish and on the passenger side door there was a sign of the paint cracking on the finish.

We've taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Glass sections showed well across the car with no major scratches, there was a slight sign of de-lamination on the drivers side of the windscreen but nothing major that restricted the view. Seals and trim around the Triumph also looked clean and tidy. The brightwork looked to have slight signs of pitting on the front bumper, but overall, and considering the condition of the whole car, was not a major cause for concern.

Take a look through the exterior gallery and review video, we take you across all the areas of the car as if you were standing there for yourself. This way, you can see in greater detail what a great looking car the Stag really is.

Interior

Many original features and comfortable surroundings greet the driver when entering the cabin area.

Seats and Carpets

The interior in this Stag is in lovely condition, with seats looking good. There was some slight signs of wear on the passenger side bolster section but given that the interior looks largely original, showed in a great way.

Carpets overall looked to be in a good condition, the drivers carpet was looking a little tired but given that this is most likely original it didn't cause us a concern.

Dashboard

The dials and clock functions look to be in a great condition and had no signs of fogging or issues with display. The dash area features an aftermarket stereo system which was tested during our visit and found no issues with.

Our interior gallery section takes you over some closer images of the Triumph's dashboard, head over and see the cars interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A Stag branded wheel sits ready for the driver to take control of the road ahead, showing in a respectable condition there was a slight nick on the right hand side of the wheel but nothing major.

The auto gear selector was in a nice condition with the main cabin area looking neat and tidy.

Mechanics

An older rebuild on the classic 3.0L V8 has meant the heart in this classic Triumph is still running to the beat.

Engine and Gearbox

With the engine rebuild really benefitting the car for current and future owners, we had no issues with the cold start of the car. You can watch the "On the Road" video to see this, and to see the car in action.

This car features a not often seen automatic gearbox in a Stag, arguably a smart choice for this British sporting GT. Again, you can see the car in action in the video, the car going through the gears without any issue on our visit.

Suspension and Brakes

Whilst out on our road we took the car onto some local roads and we noted no knocks, or unwanted noises from the suspension and the braking showed no sign of pulling or strain.

Take a look at our "On the Road" video to see in real time how the car responds to the road and driving.

The Drive

A smooth and comfortable drive greeted us on the journey out. Taking the car on the road showed all the gauges working as they should do. The 3.0L V8 sounded great whilst driving and with the top down on the road makes for an enjoyable experience. The owner reported no issues with the braking or steering.

Gears changes were working with no issues or struggle and the auto gearbox worked its way up and down the gears with no hesitation. The Stag has power steering although this is not a modern day setup.

Electrics and Other

Starting the car up from cold showed no issues and the car dials responded with no observed issues. We were able to test the radio / stereo system on our drive out which was working as it should. To the best of June's knowledge the car has no issues with any of the electrical functions in the car.

If any further questions are needed about the electronic functions within the car, these can be added in the comments section at the base of the listing.

History and Paperwork

A true British classic, this Stag is coming from ~39 years ownership, an extensive exterior restoration in 2015 and careful ownership in all this time makes it a cracking example.

With its sleek looks, style and performance this Triumph has a lot to offer. The Stag has had a great amount of restoration and maintenance bestowed on it over the past 20 years, the engine was reconditioned under current ownership in around 1997, with the bodywork being completely overhauled to bring it up to its present condition in 2015. Receipts and itemised billing is on show in the paperwork gallery section along with restoration progress pictures showing exactly what was actioned as part of the project and how the project progressed.

Since the engine rebuild, very few miles have been put into the car with ~8,153 showing on the clock at the time of visit. June estimates around £30k has been spent on the car for the rebuild with a respray for the optional, and included, hard top which also had its roof lining relined as part of the work. The Triumph has had regular oil changes and a new oil cooler recently fitted also.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
