Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

Great looking and great sounding, the stylish V8 powered Stag has that classic 70's British appeal.

The Triumph Stag is a 2+2 sports tourer produced between 1970 and 1978 by the British Triumph Motor Company and styled by Giovanni Michelotti, an Italian designer and one of the most prolific designers of sports cars working with companies such as Ferrari, Lancia, Maserati and of course, Triumph. Envisioned as a luxury sports car, it was designed to compete directly with the Mercedes-Benz SL. All Stags were four-seater convertible coupes but for structural rigidity and to meet new American rollover standards at the time, the Stag required a B-pillar 'roll bar' hoop connected to the windscreen frame by a T-bar.

This Stag comes to market from ~35 year family ownership, having been purchased in 1988. It is a cherished example, having covered just ~1,000 miles since 2006, and the owner remarking that it has been garaged and not taken out in the wet. In preparation for sale, the car underwent a big service in November 2022 at a cost of ~£2,000, the work covering fueling, cooling, and braking, this car is very much ready for a new owner to enjoy this Spring onwards.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Sue the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The Triumph was my husbands favourite, a comfortable interior and beautiful sounding V8 engine.

The Triumph Stag has remained a family pride and joy for almost ~35 years. It was owned by Sue's late husband, who purchased the car back in 1988. Both classic car enthusiasts, this was very much his car, and Sue had her own, only recently driving this one. She tells us "The Stag has had regular attention to its original interior and its always been kept really clean, the original V8 engine with manual gearbox and overdrive drives so well and also comes complete with the original hard top for the car".

More recently, Faversham Classics in Kent who carried out a full service and MOT for Sue in readiness for sale purposes, they also remarked what excellent condition the underside is in given that it is almost ~47 years old. Due to family circumstances Sue is now selling the Stag which was her late husbands classic. She will try her best to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

An unmistakable and favourite design amongst British classic car enthusiasts, the 2+2 convertible format of this sporting GT was a hit.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels and tyres look great on this Stag - the car sits well and with style. The wheels look great all-round with just a little age beginning to show on the outer rims. Fitted with smart looking 14" Kent wheels, the alloys present well without major scuffing or marking. Centre caps look good all the way around with original 'Stag' branding on these.

Hankook Optimo tyres show 185/80 to the front and rears with date codes from 07/22 on the side walls. Take a look over the exterior gallery section for a close up view of the wheels and tyres on the Triumph.

Bodywork

The panel gaps look tight and correct for a car from the 70s, the shut lines also appear like they sit well and display without major concern. Across the car, the panels are good and doors look straight with no major dings looking round the exterior. When looking over the car, there wasn't anything we spotted in terms of major sign of corrosion etc, what you'd expect for a car coming from longterm caring ownership.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a proper period colour, "Russet Brown", it takes you back to the 70s in the blink of an eye. Being a car coming from long terms ownership, finish of the paint show a little sign of its age, we noted a few marks along the base of the drivers and passenger door edges. Towards the back of the car we noted a mark on the offside edge at the rear light near the rear bumper.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks good around the car and is in line with the age and mileage and appears free from chips, cracks or delamination. The chrome trim on the whole looks smart, there were signs of age and minor imperfections noted when looking over the trim sections but nothing that caused a real cause for concern.

The soft top shows well given the car is approaching its 47th birthday. When looking over the optional hard top stored in the garage, we did note a few signs of cracking on the finish and some imperfections which we've covered in more detail in our exterior gallery section.

Interior

The original matching brown interior has a real sense of classic style and adds to the authentic experience of the Stag.

Seats and Carpets

The brown seats show really well and have little in the way of major markings or any issues with rips or tears. The interior is a comfortable place to take in the road ahead for driver and passengers alike.

The carpet sections show well as do the rubber floor mats. Door cards keep with the presentable aspect of the cabin, it's clear that the interior has been looked after over its life. The boot carpet is finished in black and shows nicely although there is a small sign of wear which we've noted in our interior review video.

Dashboard

The dashboard is finished in walnut veneer, giving the cabin area a lovely feel to it. Looking over the dash face and top, presentation is great and shows without any major cracking or warping.

The instruments are all nice and clean with the odometer reporting ~54,338 miles at the time of our visit. Our interior gallery section takes you over some closer images of the Stag dashboard, head over and see the cars interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original Stag steering wheel together with an 4 speed gear selector are both showing in a respectable condition.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

With its naturally aspirated 3.0L V8, the Stag offered ~145BHP and a top speed of ~120MPH from factory.

Engine and Gearbox

The rear wheel drive with a 4 speed manual gearbox and overdrive operates well and is reported to be fully functional. The car worked its way through the gears nicely with the clutch working well. We noted no shaking or juddering on the steering and showed no issues when out on the road.

As mentioned previously, Faversham Classics have carried out a major service/maintenance, in preparation for sale so the new owner can have confidence in the car. This included; new viscous coupling for viscous fan, new coolant pipes, new thermostat, new alternator belt, brake fluid change and new master cylinder, fuel tank cleaned, carbs serviced. Head over to the 'Mechanical Review' video for an overview of the engine, here you can see the car start up from cold and taken out on a short drive with the owner.

Suspension and Brakes

Responsible for road holding, handling behavior and ride comfort, the Stag has fully independent suspension with MacPherson struts in front and semi-trailing arms at the rear. Sue also reports that the suspension provides a very smooth ride, free from any unusual knocks or noises.

Sue reports the brakes are working well and as you would expect, especially given the brake fluid change and new brake master cylinder fitted recently by Faversham Classics. Please view the mechanical review video and photographs to see close-up images from underneath the car.

The Drive

A uniquely practical 70's sports car, with 3.0L of power at your disposal, and with enough room for the family - what more could you ever want on a British summer's day.

The Stag is ideal for long distance touring car, weekend classic open top motoring and both good and bad weather days thanks to its optional hard top supplied with the car.

Electrics and Other

The Triumph has basic electrics as you expect from a car of this era. The car has a Sharp cassette / radio which looks period correct and fits in with the walnut dashboard really well. A heater is installed for colder weather times. Sue reports that the radio and electrics are fully working to her knowledge.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~35 year ownership, this car has a lovely history charting this time and the ~54,000 miles, it presents well and recently had maintenance work in prep for sale to allow buyers to bid with confidence.

The Stag has had a great amount of work carried out on it over the years which we've detailed in our paperwork gallery section. This seems to tally up nicely with the ~54,000 miles covered, as detailed in the data table. Some of the highlights have been; a new J Type stainless steel exhaust system, electronic ignition, gold stripe styling and new front wing fitted in 1987. New mohair soft top fitted in 1989. A new steering rack, rear shock absorbers, brake pads and track control arms replaced in 1993. New brake callipers were installed in 2002 and a new manifold gasket was fitted in 2004.

A full service including new cooling hoses, brake master cylinder, fuel tank clean, new rear wheel cylinders and 4 new Hankook tyres was carried out in November 2022 at the cost of over £2,000.

Sue will be more than happy to answer any questions you have about the car in the comments below.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.
