Introduction

Kulraj Salh
COO

Looking for an easy to work on V8-powered four-seat convertible that not only sounds great but looks good too – then the Triumph Stag could be for you.

The Triumph Stag is a 2+2 sports tourer which was produced between 1970 and 1978 by the British Triumph Motor Company and styled by Giovanni Michelotti - a very talented Italian designer.

Packing a punch with its 3.0L V8 which offers 145bhp and a top speed of 120mph. The Stag is a great looking and great sounding British sports car with a huge following.

Be the one in the spotlight at any classic car meet with this beautiful and bright Inca yellow example. Coming out of a whopping 22 years of ownership and 10 years of dry storage, this is a great genuine example to be used and improved over time.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Kulraj after meeting David the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

David has had a blast with this 1976 Triumph Stag - lots of road trips, shows, and time / money spent over his 22 years of ownership.

However, after being parked up in a garage for some 10 years now and not being able to enjoy it as he once did, David has deciding to sell the car to find someone who will enjoy it as much as he has.

The original engine in this car over heated, which as we all know, Triumph Stags had a bad reputation for. So David got straight to work finding a suitable replacement, firstly he fitted a Rover SD1 engine, but quickly found the car was too 'tail-happy' for his liking and therefore swapped it again for another Stag engine. David still has the original engine for anybody who would be interested.

Lots of memories are tied up in this car as David's daughter remembers being picked up from school in the yellow Stag - everyone loves the car, it's a real head-turner.

David will be more than happy to answer any questions you have in the comments below.

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

Sharp and sexy Michelotti body lines finished in Inca yellow - a firm favourite with Triumph enthusiasts and pertrolheads.

Wheels and Tyres

Take a look at these star wheels, they're so '70s cool.

After assessing each wheel, we think they all look great - no curbing or marks that caught our attention, a really nice example.

The tyres are Radial Dayton and are beginning to show their age, however, all staying inflated - remember this car has been stored for 10 years.

Please take a look at the exterior images and videos to see this car wheels and tyres in more detail.

Bodywork

A really tidy car ready to be used and shown in 2021.

All the shut lines look tight and correct when we consigned the car. We did notice a little bubbling along the bottom of the doors. Also a few very small areas of surface rust - nothing significant for the age of the car.

Please view the videos and images of the exterior to really appreciate this 1976 Stag.

Paint

Bright Inca yellow - it's so period but works so well today, a very vibrant and eye-catching sports convertible.

The paint is even in finish and colour across the panels, it got a lovely deep glossy look. You can just tell this example has been well cared for over its life.

Please take a look at the images and videos to really appreciate this cars paintwork.

Glass and Trim

Again, all in excellent condition in line with the rest of this car.

All the glass looks great with no damage or discolouration.

The chrome bumpers on this sporty '70s convertible also look in great condition.

The convertible roof and back window look good too. Please take a look at the videos and images to see the glass and trim in closer detail.

Interior

Sexy yet practical – the inside of the Stag has enough room for all the family plus luggage, travel in style with the roof down.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are finished with hard-wearing black vinyl material that really has stood the test of time. All four seats in this car look in excellent condition - a very nice interior indeed.

The carpets are black with a deep pile. We think they also look great and would benefit from a deep clean in some areas.

Along with the seats and carpets the convertible headlining looks very good too, overall a lovely example that has really been given the care and attention it deserves.

Dashboard

Elegance and class - wooden veneer, chrome dials, and black gauges are too be found in this iconic '70s classic.

All the dials look very clear, crisp and free from damage or discolouration over the years.

Please view the extensive interior content for a detailed view of the dashboard.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original 'STAG' steering wheel is present. The steering wheel has an Italian/American '70s racing look to it, with its 3 metal spokes and black leather finish.

The gear stick too looks in great condition with overdrive fitted for smooth and comfortable rides down to the coast.

Mechanics

Packing a punch with its torquey 3.0L V8 powerplant which really makes this Stag gallop.

Engine and Gearbox

Boasting the Triumph V8 3.0L powerplant, this engine gives you all the power you'd need in a sporty convertible.

As mentioned previously the original engine (which David still has) overheated and he has now replaced it with a different Stag engine.

Please watch the cold start video, after sitting for 10 years and not having much fuel in the tank the car does take a few attempts to start. Once the fuel was in the system the car ran very nicely.

The car is fitted with overdrive too, and when looking at the options plate the car seems to support this.

As the car has been dry stored for 10 years and due to it not being used, it will probably require a light recommission and servicing - a little job to keep you busy for winter 2020.

Suspension and Brakes

While moving the car around for photos, David reports that the car stops just as it should and the brakes are working.

David also mentions that the suspension feels good too, no unusual knocks or noises present. David used to love driving this car, he said the suspension was perfect especially for long road trips and holidays with the children.

Please view the mechanical photos and video to see underneath the car.

The Drive

Where to start, 3.0L of power at your disposal, wind-through-hair motoring with enough room for the family and kitchen sink - what more could you ever want on a British summer's day.

This bright Inca yellow Triumph stag looks, sounds and drives great. You don't see many of these out anymore and that's why we love it.

It's a uniquely practical '70s sportscar.

Electrics and Other

Fairly basic electrics as you expect from this era. The car does feature a cassette radio and a heater - that's all you need on a nice sunny weekend to enjoy yourself in this sporty convertible.

History and Paperwork

Coming out of 22 years of loving ownership - David will be sad to see the yellow stag go and will miss the sheer driving pleasure this car offers.

Unfortunately, David lost all the paperwork with this car in the process of applying for a new V5 from the DVLA.

However, after 22 years of ownership, he knows this car inside out and will be happy to answer any of your questions in the comment section.

This is a great opportunity for a home mechanic to go through the car, replace all the serviceable parts and action a fresh MOT for total peace of mind.

Checks carried out by us:
- Photo ID of seller.
- V5 checked against seller's photo ID.
- HPi checked and clear.

Hi David, Can you give an idea of the mileage when you purchased the car please. I assume its genuine mileage is probably 151,000 miles ? Thanks, alan

Hi,
Thanks for your reply and I see the engine has done around 50k miles so I assume you reset the speedo to zero when the engine was fitted. Could you give me an idea what the speedo was reading at that time please so I can get an idea of the total miles the car has done. Thanks, alan

Hi David,
I can see you have answered some of the questions before, apologies. School boy error.
Would appreciate answers to the other points.
I’m not sure why the hardtop is being sold separately, as a previous stag owner and not a dealer I would have expect this to be an integral part of the overall package. Are you able to share photo’s via e-mail and likely cost as I would be very interested.
Regards,
Don

Hi David,
A few questions please.
Why has the car been off the road for 10 years, was this engine related?
Was the replacement engine a fully rebuilt unit before you installed it. Did it include the heads or were these transferred from the old engine?
Is the engine that you removed the original unit, so would it provide matching details with the chassis, and is the old unit complete, and is it provided with the sale or is this by separate negotiation?
Is there an original hard top with the car, or did you buy it with soft top only?
Is the colour the original factory colour?
Also can you provide a list of the main things you have done to it during your ownership, I’m particularly interested in what body work/welding has been done.

Kind regards

Don

Did I ask to buy the original engine, no, I asked as you owned the car and advertise it at 50,000 miles, all I wanted to know is how many actual miles the car has done in reality. Don’t think it is too much to ask

Hi david
I hope your well. I have a few questions.
1. Does the engine start and run smoothly
2. What restoration has been done to the car over the years
3 is the car rust free
4. Is the mileage 51k on the engine or the car
5. Is there a hard top with the car
6 is there service history
7 is the car to be picked up from chippenham
8. Does the car still over heat
Thank you for your time
Steve

Does the hood work, as there are no photos with the hood down.

Hi Alan, when we went to photograph the vehicle, we got the back cover up, and the hood down and in to recess about 90%, but not all the way in. As the car hasn’t been used for so long, it needed more investigation and David couldn’t really remember the exact procedure to get it in. Hope that helps. Best, Kulraj – Trade Classics

Hi
Have you made any mods for the cooling system? Kenlowe fan or similar?
Is there a current MOT?
How old are the tyres, do they need replacing?
Is mileage genuine?
Thanks
Terry.
