Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

1 of ~400 Premium cars finished with JPS styled black with gold livery, these TR7s represented a sign of things to come for the model.

The TR7 has spent much of its life living under the shadow of its illustrious forefathers. Traditionalist enthusiasts of the open-top Michelotti designed models didn't take to the Harris Mann penned 'Wedge', as the parent company continued to dominate the headlines for the wrong reasons. However, the TR7 has seen something of a re-evaluation in recent years, as its qualities for its DIY friendly underpinnings, comfort and potential to handle well has meant that the car is now established as something of a genuine head-turning classic. In 2-litre form, it could never be accused of being slow and offers excellent parts availability.

As a post-1980 Canley assembled car, this example has benefited from over 200 improvements compared to the original 1975 car. Some of the physical specification changes include the standard fitment of a folding sunroof, alloy wheels and the distinctive plaid interior.

Coming to market from over 20 years of ownership, this "Premium" limited edition TR7 in black and gold in what is often referred to as "JPS" colours, was a one of ~400 FHC produced. They were a changeover model that came with many items featured in the 1981 model year onwards cars, like the tan check seats. The car has covered just ~45,500 miles over ~40 years, just 800 of those in the last 10, and has 4 former keepers registered. The interior on this example is in great condition, the car starts on the button, and it's had no shortage of expenditure over the years. However there's room for improvement with the exterior presentation, time taking its toll on some areas of this wedge shaped icon.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Gary the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Used as my daily driver for my first 5 years of ownership, more recently the car has seen much less action.

Gary purchased this TR7 Premium back in October 2001, 20.5 years ago, thoroughly enjoying it when first purchased. The last 10 years have seen the car cover ~800 miles, but he mentions it still turns heads when he takes it out in the summer. Gary goes on to say that this edition is rare and hardly ever encountered on the market these days: "In fact, I can honestly say that this is the only one I've seen for sale since the mid-nineties, and certainly not on the open road, other than in motoring magazines & reference books!".

He's given an honest appraisal of the car, it's coming to market only due to his covered storage no longer being an option, and he's hoping a Triumph enthusiast will help to bring out the best in this car. It's recently had a service actioned, with engine and gearbox oil changed, and ignition service with new plugs, leads, points, coil and a battery. Gary will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

It's the iconic wedge shape of the late 70s, the 7 was a huge change from the TR design of the past.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the original alloy wheels that came with the "Premium" TR7 model as standard, Gary mentions that he painted them with protective paint when originally purchased.

They present in good condition, no obvious signs of curb marks etc, and we think could be renovated for a more original finish by a new owner. View the image gallery to see them up close.

Bodywork

Sharp, aggressive styling was the order of the day for the TR7, the grill was gone and replaced with a much more aerodynamic front end complete with pop-up headlights.

Gary has had some work actioned in the past, some major work actioned in 2003 that included new sills and rear wings. With the car having been through a mix of storage locations in the mid noughties, the bodywork is suffering from some corrosion in places. This is most noticeable on the headlight covers, front of the bonnet and front end, bottom of the "b-pillars" and doors. View the video review to see the detail.

Paint

Finished in black as were all the "Premium" TR7s, paired with the gold livery in "JPS" style, they do give the TR7 that sportier feel.

With the bodywork actioned in 2003, the car saw new paint applied where needed. The colour and finish looks even across the car, being in black, the age related swirl marks really show up in the summer sunlight as captured. A mop and polish would help to elevate the finish. View the image gallery to see the detail.

Glass and Trim

Finished with the gold pinstripes and livery, the glass and trim on this "Premium" look in good condition. The glass is in good condition, and the rubber trim elements across the car also look in line with the age and mileage on this example.

Interior

Finished in tan vinyl and complimentary checked cloth inserts, the interior on this example has been extremely well kept.

Seats and Carpets

The first outing for this style of seat trim, the "Premium" cars featured tan vinyl with checked cloth inserts for the seats. The trim on this example looks in excellent condition, in line with the mileage.

The car is fitted with TR7 overmats, and the original carpets underneath present in used condition. View the video and photo gallery to see the detail.

Dashboard

The "Premium" models also featured a new dash, the condition of this example is good, no cracks or warping were observed when we visited. The centre console features the same tan coloured vinyl as the seats, and this trim style extends to the door cards too.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Original items are fitted in this TR7, and they again present in very good condition in line with the mileage and age of the vehicle. View the image gallery to see the detail of each item.

Mechanics

~105BHP from a 2.0L V4 engine, this example fitted with a stainless steel exhaust still gives a throaty roar to this day.

Engine and Gearbox

Gary has recently had a service actioned on the car that included new engine and gearbox oil, and an overhaul of the ignition too. It fired up on first request on the day of our consignment.

Watch the video to see the car driving around the estate, Gary operating the car with ease and carrying out some 3 point turns as we go.

Suspension and Brakes

With the car having covered what can be considered a low mileage for a 1980s model, Gary believes the car to still be running on its original suspension. On our short drive, we didn't observe any knocking or untoward noises, but giving an honest appraisal, Gary has mentioned that the bushes and shocks being original items might want to be replaced if more spirited driving was to be sought.

In addition to this, he mentions that due to a period of storage, the brakes on the rear axle appear to be a little uneven in application.

The Drive

A spritely 2 seater, these wedge shaped cars have their own cult following, particularly amongst BL enthusiasts. Sharp, retro lines and a throaty exhaust, these cars will no doubt put a smile on your face when on the road.

Electrics and Other

A few electric items that Gary has flagged to us; the offside headlight is currently winking (likely due to a faulty relay), the coolant light comes on when the brakes are applied, the rear brake lights can be temperamental.

The car is fitted with what appears to be an original radio, still working to this day as documented in the mechanics video.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from over 20 years ownership, just 4 former keepers and a low mileage count of ~45,500, this TR7 Premium with JPS styled colourway is keenly priced.

This is a reluctant sale by Gary, the main reason being that he's losing his covered storage for the car, he wants it to go to another enthusiast to ensure the car lives on. The car comes with a host of MOTs and service/maintenance details in the current ownership.

We’ve done all include seller checks, including photo ID, and V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

This reserve not met gauge is just off putting now.
