Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

Designed by Harris Mann, the Triumph TR7 was a striking take on ‘the shape of things to come’, with its wedge-like design and long sweeping swage lines, it soon proved popular both overseas and at home.

First manufactured in September of 1974, the TR7 was the latest sports car from British Leyland's Triumph division and featured a futuristic design by Harris Mann. Originally launched overseas in the US in 1975, the Triumph TR7 saw its UK launch delayed twice due to flourishing popularity overseas, with the UK debut finally arriving in May 1976 where it was received with great success.

Having undergone a number of revisions during its time, the TR7 was finally released as a Drophead Coupé (DHC) convertible, adding even more appeal to the already popular car. This particular example is of the DHC variety and was manufactured at the Solihull plant as one of the final production runs for the TR7, despite final production ending in 1981 this particular model was registered in 1982, making it one the very last TR7’s to hit British tarmac.

Martin's TR7 comes to us from a staggering 39 year ownership, with the previous owner having owned the vehicle only 12 months prior to Martin's purchase. During that time the car has been meticulously cared for, we're told never once having been driven in the wet, and dry-stored for its entire life. With all original bodywork, factory paint, and only ~47,700 miles on the clock you would be hard pushed to find a more honest example of the Triumph TR7 DHC. This has been registered with the DVLA as a "Historic Vehicle" now, and so benefits from free road tax, and not needing an annual MOT.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Martin the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The styling was ultimately quite radical for a mass production 70’s car and this was in part what drew me to the car in the first place - but when paired with the exceptional handling and driving experience on offer I simply couldn’t say no.

Martin first purchased the car in May of 1983, a little over 12 months after first registration with only 10,878 miles on the clock. Since purchase Martin has kept extensive and detailed records of all services and work carried out over the last 39 years - including a typewritten account of the car's history which can be found in our paperwork gallery below.

During his time with the car, Martin has made some modest modifications to improve the way the car drives and speaking with him on the topic he describes the car as handling perfectly, cornering with ease and still managing to retain a modest level of comfort in spite of the suspension modifications.

Sadly Martin's near 40 year ownership now has to come to an end, due to health issues, meaning he can no longer enjoy the perks of owning a convertible car and as such he's trusted us to find the next custodian of this very special car.

Exterior

With its radical 70s styling, Carnelian Red paintwork, and topless silhouette, the TR7 is an undeniably attractive car.

Wheels and Tyres

During his ownership Martin has fitted period correct 14” alloy wheels with bronze painted centres and silver lips. These appear to be in good condition with no signs of curb damage or corrosion present.

The wheels are fitted with Pirelli tyres on the rears, and Eagle NCT on the front, which all look to be in good condition, with no visible perishing of the sidewalls or other such damage to speak of.

Bodywork

Speaking with Martin he is very proud of the originality of his car, telling us the bodywork has remained untouched since it left the factory. Looking around the car we are inclined to agree, the bodywork looks to be in great condition, with all panel gaps appearing even and symmetrical and no sign of dents, dings, or damage to be seen.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

As with the bodywork, Martin assures us the paintwork is also original and wholly unmolested, save for a good polish every now and then, the paintwork is as it was the day it left the factory. Save for one or two stone chips that we had to strain our eyes to see, the paintwork really is in beautiful condition, with the Carnelian Red colourway offset against the black and bronze highlights of the car.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Not wanting to break the mould, the glass is also in great condition, looking as though it too is likely a factory item. With no chips, cracks, or scratches present on any of the panes, we could not see any imperfections in the glass.

Likewise as you move around the car you can see the trim is also in fantastic condition, barely looking a day over 4 years old, never mind 40 - this is likely thanks to Martin's insistence that the car never find out what a rain cloud looks like, and it looks to have paid off in the condition of the exterior nicely.

Interior

The interior of this Triumph TR7 is fantastically preserved, the tan upholstery still looking brilliant and keeping in perfect contrast with the Carnelian Red exterior.

Seats and Carpets

The tan upholstery of the TR7 is in brilliant condition, with the material showing only minimal signs of wear on the whole. With the exception of one very small spot of damage to the passenger side upper seat bolster, both the material and piping is in fantastic condition.

Likewise the carpets are in good condition too, albeit slightly aged in the drivers footwell, the fabric could mostly just do with a light clean to bring back the vibrant tan colour, however we could not spot any real damage to any of the carpets in the car - with some areas such as under seats looking almost brand new.

Dashboard

The dashboard is black plastic, which can be prone to fade from sun damage, however this example boasts rich black plastics that look as they would have from the factory. With all gauges, switches, buttons, and dials present on the dash free from damage too - the dashboard is in very nice condition across the board.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Martin made the choice to swap out the standard TR7 steering wheel for the slightly beefier TR8 steering wheel, this makes for a more comfortable grip and suits the car rather well at the same time. The steering wheel itself is in keeping with the rest of the interior, showing no real signs of wear or damage.

Likewise the gear stick is in equally good condition, as is the tan gaiter surrounding it, and neither item appears to have any visible damage.

Mechanics

Powered by its 2.0L four cylinder engine, the British TR7 makes ~105bhp, 10bhp more than its American counterpart, and along with its modest handling upgrades makes this particular Triumph sports car the perfect B-Road companion.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.0L 4 cylinder engine has been regularly serviced during Martin's ownership and save the chrome strut bar across the engine bay the engine and its ancillaries are all original and unmodified. The engine itself starts nicely, as can be seen and heard in our cold start video, and pulls well throughout the rev range.

Likewise the gearbox is also in good condition, changing through the gears smoothly and without any crunches - during the ‘On The Road’ video you can see and hear Martin change through the gears with ease.

Suspension and Brakes

During his ownership Martin has made some choice modifications to the car, predominantly to improve handling and road feel, these modifications are as follows: TR8 discs and callipers; uprated brake servo; 14” period correct alloy wheels; hardened front and rear suspension bushes and subframe mounts; Spax gas filled rear shock absorbers; and finally the chrome plated strut brace fitted across the engine bay.

Martin assures us all of these modifications have been carried out to the highest of standards and whilst stiffening the chassis considerably, he has managed to retain some level of comfort so that longer drives do not become unbearably uncomfortable.

The Drive

This classic British sports car has a wonderful combination of character and credibility, with the TR line of Triumphs having been popular in the world of motorsport for over half a decade.

The TR7 stays true to its heritage and handles well, providing all the fun and thrills of any modern sports car in a raw and driver centric package that has been tried and tested for over 40 years. Add into the mix the modifications made by Martin and this particular TR7 really embodies the all fun and no frills spirit of classic sports car motoring.

Electrics and Other

During our time spent with the vehicle we found no faults with any of the electrical systems on the vehicle, with all lights, dials, and gauges working as expected alongside the aftermarket radio.

History and Paperwork

With a typewritten history bespoke to the car, a folder full of paperwork, and ownership spanning just shy of 40 years, the history of this TR7 should inspire confidence in even the most cautious of buyers.

Since 1982 this car has been regularly and properly serviced, stored, and maintained. With the only gaps in service history being fully accounted for by periods of long term storage over winter, as can be confirmed in Martin’s typewritten account of the cars history.

From factory to forecourt and forecourt to garage, this car has remained in fantastic condition as can be seen throughout this listing. Martin has gone to great lengths to make sure that whoever buys his pride and joy of the last 39 years really will be buying something special.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
