Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

The Volvo P1800 is up there with some of the most timeless and elegantly designed cars in the world.

The P1800 was Volvo's response to a 2+2 front-engine, rear-wheel drive sports tourer. The body styling was crafted by Swedish designer Pelle Petterson, with the initial prototype, named the X1, ready in 1957. Despite initial setbacks with Karmann in West Germany, where Volkswagen's intervention threatened the project's continuation, Volvo eventually found a home for production in Britain. Jensen, known for making body panels for Austin-Healey sports cars, took on the task. However, due to quality control issues, production shifted to Volvo's Gothenburg factory in Sweden in 1963, marking the birth of the 1800S.

This 1967 Volvo P1800 S, originally from California, arrived in the UK in 2019. After four years of ownership, it found its way to the well known Clive Brook Volvo dealership, where our vendor, Martin, acquired this classic Volvo ~6 months ago. It has been upgraded to the 2.0L engine at some point in its life, and as can be seen from the condition has been restored in the past. The P1800S comes with a fresh MOT valid until 14.12.2024.

This listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Martin the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

What better classic could you think of buying for continental driving?

Martin purchased the Volvo last year with a mission to use it for continental touring. The P1800 S was the perfect choice for him; with stylish looks, ample space inside, and an upgraded 2,000cc engine, the Volvo ticked all the boxes for a continental road trip in a '60s classic, not to mention its ability to turn heads.

The plans for continental driving haven't quite come to fruition due to health, and so the car comes to market on auction with us. Martin will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Coupés don't come much cooler than this - the styling, often thought to be Italian is, in fact, from junior Swedish designer Pelle Petterson.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with original steel wheels painted in silver, these show no signs of damage or corrosion. They are complemented by the correct hubcaps which are in good condition. A matching set of Verdestein Snow Classic tyres were found on the car, they all had a substantial amount of tread remaining.

Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

The bodywork on the P1800 S is in really good condition. The panels align well with equal gaps. Being picky, the driver's door sits a little proud, but it can be pushed in, so this may need minor adjustment to the door catch. The underside looks in good order, coated with a stone-guard type product to future-proof it against stone chips causing unwanted corrosion.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in what is thought to be "Medium Blue", the paintwork on the P1800 S is excellent, with no noticeable chips, blemishes, or scratches. Martin told us the car had a respray 3/4 years ago whilst in the US.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows are in good condition, free from damage or excessive scratches. Some signs of age appear in some window seals. The brightwork, some chrome and some stainless steel, is generally in good condition, with a small amount of tarnishing in places.

The headlights and rear lights are free from damage. The rear light seals have perished slightly but are probably quite an easy item to replace.

Interior

The well-styled interior takes you straight back to the 1960s.

Seats and Carpets

The front seats are in very good order, with no splits or damage to the vinyl. The seat in the rear has the embossed Volvo logo, suggesting it is original. The door cards also have this, there are some small signs of age-related wear in a couple of places on these. All carpets have been replaced and are therefore in very good condition.

The boot has been finished in black and has the jack and spare wheel in place, along with a workshop manual and a rubber floor mat. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The top of the dashboard is in good order with no signs of damage. The aluminium fascia looks nice and straight, with no dings or dents. The chrome surrounds on the instruments have some light tarnishing and there is a small ding to the oil pressure gauge surround. The odometer has a reading of ~97,466 miles at the time of our visit.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with the original three-spoke steering wheel, this has some age-related wear to the rim in keeping with the age and mileage of the Volvo. The gear knob is in good order, along with the gear gaiter.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

An upgraded 2.0-litre engine now graces the engine bay of the P1800 S, this being an earlier car, it is fuelled via carburettors.

Engine and Gearbox

The old 1.8-litre engine has been upgraded to a 2.0-litre, improving performance. The car fires up from cold without hesitation, with no reported issues by Martin. The engine bay presents well, with no leaks spotted.

The four-speed gearbox operates as it should, with a smooth change. A column-mounted stalk operates overdrive in fourth, and a dash-mounted light indicates it is in overdrive. Watch the video to see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The coupé is excellent on the road, with no knocks or bangs heard during our test drive. Stopping the car is as expected; with a new AP Lockheed servo fitted a few weeks ago, there are no issues reported.

The Drive

The first thing you notice is the colour, which stands out perfectly, showing off the fantastic shape of this iconic Volvo. Driving it is superb, and it's easy to see why Martin had intended to use it for trips abroad, especially with the upgraded 2.0-litre engine.

Electrics and Other

The switchgear in the car works correctly and appears to be in good condition for the age of the car. The clock is the only thing reported not to work, and the speedometer needle does bounce a little, which is quite common in many classics.

There is a Sony radio cassette player fitted, which could easily be swapped for something a little more period-looking.

History and Paperwork

A Californian import, just one previous UK keeper has owned the Volvo since it came to the UK, this car comes with an upgraded later 2.0L engine too.

Because the car came from the States, there is, unfortunately, very little paperwork other than a few parts that have been purchased and fitted while the car has been in the UK. Although not needed as the car is exempt, the P1800S comes with a fresh MOT valid until 14.12.2024, giving the new keeper peace of mind.

This is an excellent example of Swedish engineering, featuring a lovely body restoration and finished in the wonderful "Medium Blue". It also had the upgraded 2.0-litre engine fitted, making it easily capable of keeping up with modern-day traffic, with the bonus of being sat behind the wheel of possibly one of the most stunning-looking cars ever made.

We've done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5, and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above. However, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail. This has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa, and take your time to review everything on this listing to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming. If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
