Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

Volvo didn't very often produce coupés - you have to ask yourself why, when they managed to create something this good looking.

Launched in 1961, the Volvo P1800 was Volvo’s answer to a 2+2 front engine, rear-wheel drive sports tourer. The body styling was done by Swedish designer Pelle Petterson, with the first prototype ready in 1957, known as the X1. This was driven to the headquarters of Karmann in West Germany, who would take on the tooling and building of the P1800. Unfortunately, this was cut short when Volkswagen stepped in with the threat of cancelling their contracts with Karmann if they took on the project, as they saw the P1800 as competition.

With a contract for 10,000 units, it didn’t take long before Volvo realised that the quality control from the Brits was sub-par, and in 1963, after just 6,000 cars were produced, Volvo ended the contract with Jensen and moved production to their Gothenburg factory in Sweden, where the car became known as the 1800 S. The S denotes they were made in Sweden. The 1800 S was also given an 8bhp power increase until 1969, when the B18 engine was replaced with the B20B engine producing 118 bhp. Then, in 1970, came the addition of fuel injection and a revised camshaft, pushing the P1800 E to 130bhp, and this is the model we have here.

This charming P1800E has been with Martin for ~1 year, and in that time, he has covered approximately ~50 miles in the 70s classic, and spent some time getting some recommission work completed on the car after it hadn't been in regular use prior. With recent items including brakes calipers, brake master cylinder, clutch cable, and a service including spark plugs and rotor/points, this P1800E is now looking to be used as intended.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Martin the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Ever since seeing Roger Moore as The Saint in a P1800 - it has been on my list of cars to own.

Martin bought this car ~1 year ago, and as mentioned, it had been a dream of his to own. Unfortunately, since buying the car, Martin has had a replacement knee. Although he loves driving the P1800, and despite all efforts, getting in and out of the Volvo is just proving to be quite difficult and painful, so he has reluctantly decided to part with it.

In his ownership, he's spent some time doing a light recommission on the car, having a full service actioned along with a brake overhaul. Please feel free to ask any questions in the comments below.

Exterior

A stylish coupé tourer which will always look cooler than cool - The Saint drove one after all!

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels look to be the originals which have been refurbished and are in very good condition, and the tyres are all in good condition and have a good amount of tread remaining.
Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

The P1800 had some cosmetic work carried out in 2016, which included new wheel arches and outer sills. Looking around, there are no dings to mention and the door shut lines look to be straight and even and open and close with a firm hand. The bonnet and boot also align nicely with an equal panel gap. There are some small signs of corrosion under some areas of paint as pictured, like the bottom corner of the drivers door and an area at the lowest point of the offside rear wing.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in the sought-after creamy white, the Volvo was repainted in 2016 when the bodywork was attended to. The paintwork is in nice condition, there are a few small blisters here and there, but nothing that looks like it has broken through the paint.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows are in good condition for the age of the vehicle. There is a scratch on the driver's side windscreen and a small amount of delamination on the top corner. The side windows are also in good order with just a few age-related marks, as you would expect. The windscreen and side window seals do have some perishing in keeping with the age of the vehicle.

The chrome work on the bumpers has started to tarnish, and there is also some pitting on the door and boot handles. The trim that runs down the centre swage line of the car does have a couple of dinks to mention.

Interior

Retrimmed front seats offer a nice amount of comfort when driving this 1970s classic.

Seats and Carpets

The front seats in the Volvo have been retrimmed and are in lovely condition. Geek fact for you, Volvo invented the three-point seatbelt; just look at that cool seatbelt buckle. The door cards look to be the originals as they retain the embossed Volvo logo, just like the rear seat.

The previous keeper has replaced the carpets and so they are still in very good condition. Inside the boot is a rubber mat with the spare wheel in place. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

It's a nice place to be in the Volvo, the dash is free from any cracks, and the wood facia is in good condition. The odometer is working as it should and shows ~105,900 miles. However, during our visit, the oil and water temperature gauges were not working, and this issue has not been investigated.

Across the dashboard, the clock is working, as are the oil pressure and fuel gauges. A Radiomobile radio is believed to have an aux cable attached, but this is untested. Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The three-spoke steering wheel has some age-related marks on the rim, and the gearknob has a split down the side, but it would be an easy item to replace.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

Fitted with the D-Jetronic fuel injection system from Bosch - the 2.0 litre produces ample power for the P1800E.

Engine and Gearbox

Being a later car, it is equipped with fuel injection, a significant step forward in the motoring world, offering improved performance, reliability and economy. This car has been serviced in the summer with new plugs, points, rotor, oil and air filters, helping to ensure it fires up on asking.

The Volvo fires up as it should with no untoward noises coming from the engine bay. The car pulls well through the four-speed gearbox, which has overdrive on fourth and operates correctly; there has also been a new clutch cable fitted. Watch the "On The Road" video to see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

Out in the Volvo, it's nice and smooth, with no knocks or bangs coming from either corner. Martin has had the steering box serviced, which has given the P1800E a more positive feel through the wheel.

The brakes have been overhauled within the last ~50 miles with two new front calipers, a set of brake pads and a new master cylinder.

The Drive

The P1800E is a fantastic car to be in, drive and look at. It turns heads wherever it goes and will always be a conversation starter when you are filling up or sitting outside a country pub for a classic coffee morning.

Electrics and Other

The switchgear does show some signs of age but is reported to all be working as it should.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~1 year ownership with some recent recommissioning work, just 4 former keepers registered, this UK RHD is awaiting a new owner to drive it as intended.

There is a nice amount of paperwork which comes with the car, some from the time with Martin within the past 12 months and before that from the previous keeper Derek. The most recent work has included a service, brake calipers, master cylinder, pads and the service/adjustment to the steering box.

The Volvo has an MOT valid until the 14th July, 2023. The V5 is present, showing four previous keepers.

This is an excellent opportunity to own a classic Volvo, which looks to have been well maintained. Martin would love for the car to go to another enthusiast who is able to enjoy driving the 70s classic.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
