Introduction

Isaac Wass
Professional Consigner

Volvo rarely produced coupés, which makes you wonder why, especially when they succeeded in designing something this striking.

Launched in 1961, the Volvo P1800 was Volvo’s answer to a 2+2 front-engine, rear-wheel drive sports tourer. The body styling was done by Swedish designer Pelle Petterson, with the first prototype ready in 1957, known as the X1. This was driven to the headquarters of Karmann in West Germany, who would take on the tooling and building of the P1800. Unfortunately, this was cut short when Volkswagen stepped in with the threat of cancelling their contracts with Karmann if they took on the project, as they saw the P1800 as competition.

With a contract for 10,000 units with Jensen, it didn’t take long before Volvo realised that the quality control from the Brits was sub-par, and in 1963, after just 6,000 cars were produced, Volvo ended the contract with Jensen and moved production to their Gothenburg factory in Sweden, where the car became known as the 1800 S. The S denotes they were made in Sweden. The 1800 S was also given an 8bhp power increase until 1969, when the B18 engine was replaced with the B20B engine, producing ~118 bhp. Then, in 1970, came the addition of fuel injection and a revised camshaft, pushing the 1800E to ~130bhp.

This lovely 1800E has been with our vendor, Nic, for the past five years, Nic carried out some body restoration just after he bought the car, including a full bare metal respray, Nic owned a bodyshop perviously for over 20 years so was very selective on which bodyshop he chose to do the work.

The car is MOT and ULEZ exempt.

This listing was written from information supplied by Isaac after meeting Nic the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

For me, the Volvo P1800 is undoubtedly one of the most stylish cars of the 1970s.

The design was masterminded by a Swedish genius, Pelle Petterson. It has been a favourite of Nic’s for several years. Initially drawn in by its style and stand-out bright red paintwork, the Volvo was in lovely condition but just needed a little TLC to bring it up to Nic’s standards, which it has received during his ownership. Nic has loved the usability, practical and reliable along with its rarity.

Unfortunately, due to health issues, Nic has made the regrettable decision to part with his all-time favourite 1970s classic, which will be sadly missed.

Nic will be happy to answer any questions in the comment section below.

Exterior

Sleek, timeless styling with elegant curves, a low profile, and distinctive chrome accents that complement classic European sports car design.

Wheels and Tyres

The original wheels are in good condition; there is a small amount of tarnishing to the unpainted area at the edges of the spokes, but nothing excessive.

Three different makes of tyres are fitted, Athree-A and Mazzini at the front and a matching set of Carbon Series at the rear, all of which have plenty of tread remaining.

Please see the image gallery for a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

Looking around the Volvo, the car presents very well with no dings or dents spotted, and the panel alignment is very good.

Both rear wings, the front panel and the right-hand door skin were replaced in September 2019, followed by a full bare metal respray, Nic told us he owned a bodyshop for 20+ years so was very selective on choosing the right bodyshop to do the work.

We’ve highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos. Please take the time to review all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the van’s condition for yourself.

Paint

A change from the original gold colour in the late 1980s, the Volvo has received a complete colour change by a previous keeper and has been repainted in what is thought to be Signal Red. This has an excellent finish with a deep, lustrous shine to it thanks to a full bare metal respray in 2019.

The images have been taken from various angles to show the car as you would see it in person. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos to form your own opinion of the paint’s condition.

Glass and Trim

The windows appear in good condition, with no noticeable scratches to point out. All of the seals and chrome window trims present well with minimal perishing or tarnishing.

The chrome bumpers, grille, headlight surrounds, and trim that runs along the swage line are all in good condition with minimal signs of age.

Both the front and rear lights are in good order, with no damage to the lenses.

Interior

Leather seats and a charming dash layout offer an excellent level of comfort inside this '70s classic.

Seats and Carpets

The tan seats present well - there's just a small amount of colour wear to the driver's seat in some places, but nothing excessive. Both door cards are in good condition, and the rear seat is in good order.

A complete set of insulation and new red carpets were installed in May 2024, which means the carpets are in excellent condition. Inside the boot is clean and tidy with a new boot carpet. The spare wheel and jack are also present.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The original dashboard does have a small split just to the left of the instruments, but the wooden fascia is in good condition. All of the original instruments present well, and the odometer shows a reading of ~43,620 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more high-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original steering wheel is in good condition with slight patina, and the gear knob has the numbers clearly visible.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

Equipped with Bosch's D-Jetronic fuel injection system, the 2.0-litre engine in the 1800E delivers impressive power.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.0-litre engine was treated to a cylinder head conversion in 2013; at the same time, various other parts and hoses were replaced. The fuel-injected engine started up in our cold start video as expected after a few attempts and runs with no issues reported.

The four-speed gearbox has a smooth change, and the Volvo pulls strongly through the gears, and the overdrive works as it should.

Suspension and Brakes

On the road, the Volvo handles as you would expect for a sporty coupé. No knocks or bangs were coming from either corner of the car, and the car came to a stop in a straight line with no issues reported by Nic.

The Drive

The 1800E is not just a fantastic car to drive; it's an experience that engages all your senses. With its blend of timeless design, smooth handling, and the satisfying growl from its 2.0-litre engine, it’s a car that makes every journey feel special, and obviously, its striking looks never fail to draw attention, turning heads as you cruise down the road or park up at any event.

Electrics and Other

The switchgear in the Volvo appears to be in good condition, with no signs of excessive wear to any of the buttons, all of which are said to be working correctly.

A period-looking head unit has been fitted, which is, in fact, Bluetooth enabled.

History and Paperwork

Regular invoices dating back to the late 90s suggest the 1800E has been well maintained.

A nice collection of invoices dates back to 1998; most of the work was carried out throughout the mid-00s up until 2013 when there was a considerable amount of work done on the engine and other areas of the car addressing minor issues. The 1800E was converted to run on unleaded in February 2013. 2019 is when the Volvo received new quarter panels and a new front panel followed by a fresh coat of paint.

An MOT was carried out on 30.07.2024, and it passed with no advisories.

Coming from ~5 years ownership with Nic, this is a fantastic chance to own a classic Volvo that appears to have been well-maintained. Nick hopes the car finds a new home with another enthusiast who will appreciate and enjoy driving this iconic 70s classic.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5, and an HPI check on the vehicle.

We’ve summarised our view of the van based on the information provided by the seller above. However, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the vehicle in high-resolution detail. This has been done so that you can make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So, please sit back, have a cuppa, and take your time to review everything in this listing to make your own assessment of the vehicle’s condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time—we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there’s anything you’re unsure about, no matter how small, please ask the owner in the comments section below before placing your bids, as bids can’t be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the vehicle—just like in a traditional auction house.

Hello Nic,
If I can sort out the commitments I will try and get to see you – Whilst writing can you tell me if the car has an automatic choke (or is it a manual pull switch on the dashboard)

Regards again – Tony.

Hello Nic,
I am watching the progress on your car, and whichever way it goes I would like to thank you for your liaison and tolerance with all my questions.
As we reach the end can you tell me if you have put a reserve on the bids, I’m not sure if Trade Classics show this on the site, – there is nothing at this time.
Any guidance with this ?

Good luck in any event

Anthony.

Hi, we do indeed have a reserve set by the seller Nic. When it is met, you’ll see the listing update to say “Reserve Met”.

High bidder gets first refusal on post auction offers, so you really need to be in it to win it (eyes emoji). 🙂

Best,

Kulraj – Trade Classics

Hello Nic (& Colin from Admin)

Thanks for your message/s – I would have preferred to
personally inspect the car, but it appears now that the visit wont be achieved before the end of the auction – What I will need to know however is whether you have managed to replace and fit that Windscreen please?
Most other things I can review from the Trade Classics advertisement.

Kind regards – Tony.

Hello Nic,,
Any update regarding the installation of the replacement windscreen? – Can you confirm that this will be done before the end of the auction please.

Similarly has the heated rear window been fixed?
I am 200+ miles from you – what preferences do you have regarding a visit which may be possible.

Kind regards – Tony.

Hello Nic,

Apologies for burdening you with a substantial amount
of questions, however its the only way!
You have been helpful and tolerant, but as you will appreciate to rectify these issues would be at considerable additional cost beyond the purchase price.
(as an example to repair the clock is £100.)

I understand that many of the questions may relate to previous ownership, from which you have no idea.
The very nature of Auctions is to protect you from recourse , so a buyer would have to take a risk if things are wrong, a car that is 50 Years plus old is bound to have issues, and the questions are intended to minimise that.
I have been very appreciative of your expedient and fair replies, and wish you good luck with subsequent bidding.

Kind regards – Tony.

Hello Nic,
OK thanks – do you propose to have the Clock and heated rear window facility repaired before sale? or are you leaving it as is.
Are you having a new rubber seal on the windscreen when it is replaced.

Is there a piece of trim missing on the left side of the
steering column (where the indicator stalk enters)

Do the warning lights on the dashboard for Handbrake &
Overdrive – work.

Are the headlights dipped / flashed etc by a stalk on the steering wheel, or is it a foot operated button?

Thanks again – Tony.

Hello Nic, we are certainly getting through the questions – It would be helpful if you can verify that the Clock actually is working? and keeping time?
That the Heated rear window similarly.
and that the scratches across both sides of the screen are to receive removal or replacement?

These items can be expensive post purchase, so Im sure you will understand.

many thanks – Tony.

I believe that the front seats aren’t leather? (They are plastic over- covers)

Is the Volvo nose badge damaged – picture indicates.
The Fan in the engine is a none standard part have you had it replaced. the normal volvo part is in fact yellow.

The radiator has visible corrosion (see pictures)
Can you verify that the heated rear window works?

Was the engine cylinder head converted for using unleaded fuel – what date please.

Has the car ever had a substantial service on the gearbox, back axle, and braking system.?

Does the car have an operating overdrive.

Many thanks Tony

Hello Nic, Does the Clock work.
Are the sun visors ‘Solid’
Any damage to headlining?
Front seats – these are plastic covers? – are there the original Leather seats beneath?
Is there a tool kit?

There are no papers/ history during 1970/ late 1980.
The last recorded mileage- starts at 2009, 38363. to date. = 43,000 miles. what proof of mileage exists from 1971 to to 2009 ? – (It is a possibility that the 43,000 miles shown may actually be 1,43000 miles.) any evidence of
this period?
front and back bumpers require re;chroming?
Is the rubber gearstick gaiter damaged
Drivers door gap is Excessive?
Boot lid has large ‘gap’
Windscreen is scratched at both sides -(with wipers? )
Speedometer working correctly?
Radio

I realise that the car is over 50 years old, however the advertised mileage is a question, that poses itself as extremely low during that time, particularly having had 7 owners!

Has the car been stored for any length of time?

Any answers to the above would be much appreciated –

Thankyou — Tony.
