Introduction

Paul White
Automotive Consigner

Known as “The Peoples' Car”, the classic Volkswagen Beetle is one of the worlds most loved cars.

Produced from 1938, it's probably safe to say that the Volkswagen Beetle is one of the most iconic vehicles ever produced. Practical and reliable was the order of the day in the design of the classic VW, and not to mention affordability, which is how it became known as the peoples' car.

Over 80 years on the production line, the Beetle has gone through many changes over the years, from splitscreen, to oval window, suspension changes and engine upgrades. It's a car that has evolved over time without moving too far away from its classic roots.

This particular Beetle is in lovely condition having received a full respray around 50 miles ago. At the same time it was given a mechanical check over including brake hoses, carburettor, spark plugs, fuel hose and a full service, ensuring it's ready for plenty more miles to come.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Craig the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I wanted to create a 'his and hers' wedding car package but the world changed soon after!

Craig and Sharron originally purchased the Beetle in November 2019, with a vision of using the Beetle as the bride's car and his Jaguar as the groom's car in a wedding car venture. Needing a light restoration, the beetle was painted, mechanics were sorted and it was ready to go, unfortunately just in time for lockdown to strike.

It's not just about the business for Craig - part of the enjoyment comes from sourcing parts and building a vision.

Exterior

A four seater classic with speedster looks, finished off in the crisp Polar White.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels have been finished in the matching Polar White to the body and fitted with new white wall tyres to complete the classic look.

Bodywork

Although we can't verify it, Craig tells us that the Beetle is believed to have originally started out as a convertible - it's now more in the style of a 4-seater Speedster.

The panel gaps to the doors look to be equal on both sides and the same for gaps around the bonnet and boot.

Keeping the interior nice and dry is a custom made tonneau cover, which can be used with just the driver's seat exposed.

Paint

The beetle has been finished in Jaguar Polar White to match the Craigs other car, his Jaguar.

A full respray was started in March 2020 and finished in April 2020.

Since the rebuilding of the Beetle was completed - just 50 miles have been covered.

Glass and Trim

In the way of glass there's not much, but what bit there is happens to be the original 1964 windscreen which looks to be relatively scratch free. This has been refitted back in place with a new windscreen rubber.

Interior

Trimmed in all weather yacht material - the speedster is equipped should you get caught in a shower.

Seats and Carpets

Porsche seats have been used up front which have been trimmed in a material used in yachts that will withstand some getting wet should you get caught in a shower. The rear seat has also been trimmed to match, together with the diamond stitching and contrasting white piping.

The carpets throughout the passenger area have been replaced with new, and therefore are in excellent condition.

Dashboard

The dash is part of the body and so has been painted to match.

The fuel gauge and odometer are matching.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Regarding the steering wheel, Craig does have a confession here, it has been fitted upside down in error- another easy little job for the keen DIY mechanic.

The gear knob is believed to be the original and has no real signs of wear.

Mechanics

An air cooled classic fitted with a 1500cc is a well chosen choice for the VW Beetle.

Engine and Gearbox

A 1500cc powers the Beetle to which Craig has recently fitted a new Solex carburettor to ensure the smooth running of the car.

Fitted with a 4-speed manual gearbox, Craig reports the change is nice and smooth.

Suspension and Brakes

Ever so slightly lower than the standard ride height, the car is reported to handle lovely, with no issues to point out.

Craig tells us the brakes bring the car to a stop nice and straight, and as well as you would expect from a 1964 vehicle.

The Drive

A joy to drive and a huge head turner whichever way it travels, Craig says.

The classic sound of a Volkswagen Beetle can't be missed as you cruise down the road in the 4-seater - guaranteed to bring a smile.

Electrics and Other

There are a couple of niggles here which shouldn't cause too much of a headache for the DIY mechanic on a relatively simple car.

The wipers are not connected up - Craig comments these do work but they do need connection. The other issue is the horn, whilst it works when connected, it works without being pressed. Craig believes it is an issue with the horn button itself.

History and Paperwork

A great little summer runaround car that can be used and improved further over time.

The history is a little thin on the ground - but it has only covered just over 700 miles since 2008.

Seven previous MOT certificates and some detailed invoices for work carried out around 2015, these are with the images and we should mention the car has only completed around 400 miles since then.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and the vehicle is HPI clear.

Hello is this a genuine RHD convertible beetle or was it converted from a regular beetle.
Has it recently been in another classic car auction?
