Introduction

Tom Valle
Professional Automotive Photographer

A classic split screen campervan in period colours - simply perfect for a day trips and road trips.

There are not many vehicles out there that are so instantly recognisable. However the sum of its parts go beyond the image as just a leisure vehicle, its roots are deeply encased as a practical vehicle created to transport goods or people. Based on the Beetle, the first incarnation of the van left the factory in 1949. Known officially as the Type 2, Volkswagen seized on its potential for export markets. Its qualities of reliability, practicality and a low price made it a very appealing commodity across the world.

By the time the sixties arrived, the van had become something of a symbol for the counter-culture, further etching its place into history. With this epitome of cool and having established a durable reputation, the desirability of the original Type 2 Split screen vans particularly in passenger form soon gained momentum.

This is a great example that's ready to be used and it has been subject to some much needed upgrades, including disc brakes to the front.

The VIN number has been decoded with JBugs.com as follows:
- "This Chassis belongs to a 1966 Type 2 Panel Van"
- Type 2 Production: 8/65 - 7/66
- Type 2 Chassis: 216 000 001 - 216 100 000
- Type 2 Engine: 1500cc Single Port
- Type 2 Engine Number: H 0 000 001 - H 0 183 372
- Type 2 Front End: Link Pin (Drum)
- Type 2 Rear End: Swing Axle (Drum)
- Type 2 Lug Pattern: 5x205
- Type 2 Voltage: 6 Volt

Meet the owner

I've owned this campervan for nearly two years now and thoroughly enjoyed it, improving it at the same time.

Mark bought the campervan at the end of 2019 after seeing the potential in the bus. It was in sound order and he's made sympathetic improvements during this ownership.

Importantly you'll see the original invoice from the well respected Type 2 Detectives company for the bus and all the work they carried out, together with an invoice form Volkspec for the conversion work. Just these two bills totals over £36k, however, even though Mark has spent all this money, he is realistic in his pricing expectations and has set a low reserve ensuring its sale at auction.

Mark is more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

Period style with a modern twist - it's sure to look the part at any VW meet-up.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with Fuchs style wheels it really looks the part, and compliments well with the external two-tone colour combination. Just a nice and sympathetic modification that hints at the few other upgrades the bus has.

The tyres are all dated 2019 and are Yokohama on the front (175/55/15) and Davanti (85/65/15) on the rear - the all look like they've got a good amount of tread.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks good across the van upon our visit.

The panels looks straight and the doors and other openings fit well - the chrome / red strip really does look great contrasting against the paint.

We didn't notice any significant issues when walking around the bus - there are a few small bits and pieces that you'd expect on a bus of this age. So please make sure you watch the video and study all the images to access the condition for yourselves.

Paint

The two-tone paint is in good visual condition when looking across the bus.

We noticed a few blemishes and small signs of corrosion in a few places - you can see these in the videos and images, however, there's nothing that looks significant - it's well presented and looks great out and about.

Glass and Trim

Again the glass and trim is in good condition around the bus - of course it's now over 55 years old, so this is reflected in some areas. However, we're sure you'll be pleased with the condition considering the guide price - you can see the full condition in the media file.

Interior

This is what it's all about - getting out and about and enjoying the versatile inside: driving, eating, working (maybe) and napping!

Seats and Carpets

The seats are in very good condition due to being renovated in the recent past. The colour combination really suites the van and compliments perfectly to the exterior colours.

The bus was subject to a Volkspec Leisure 'Bavaria' conversion and is ready to be used and enjoyed.

Dashboard

No issues to note and presented in good condition - please see the images for more information.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Again presented in good condition - a period wheel in cream takes you back to a past era of driving.

Mechanics

Fitted with a 1.5-litre engine - just enough power to whisk you away on day trips.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine is presented in good condition as you can see in the images - it started from cold with no dramas and operated well as you can see by watching the 'On the Road' video in the media file.

Mark has also made sure it's been serviced well during his ownership and he's also had new fuel hoses and the tank cleaned and checked - please see the invoices to review the work actioned.

Suspension and Brakes

Both aspects on the bus have been improved - there's been lots of work on the suspension as you can see in the underside images / videos. This work includes bushes and Bilstien shocks, dropped spindles, and even disc brakes on the front - a much needed upgrade if you're planning to use the bus on longer trips and motorways.

The Drive

Just as you'd expect - classic '60s style cruising - it copes with around town driving, as you can see in the 'On the Road' video and Mark says it's good on longer trips in 4th gear.

We didn't observe any issues with the drive around Mark's local area.

Electrics and Other

As mentioned, the van has been subject to the 'Bavaria' conversion, so has all the conveniences you'll need on your day trips away - it's also had a DC conversion too.

Mark assures us that all electronic items are working, including the radio. Also, you can see in the paperwork the recent checks that have been actioned by Volkspec.

History and Paperwork

Imported into the UK in 2005, it's clear to see this bus has been subject to a lot of attention in that time - a perfect day trip companion as well as a potentially sound investment.

As mentioned, Mark has owned this campervan for the last couple of years and due to changes in lifestyle has now decided the time is right to find it a new owner.

We've actioned all our usual checks on the seller ID, V5 and HPi.
