Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

One of the world's most loved cars, tastefully uprated and restored with a 1.6L air-cooled block in the rear and a sweet raspy soundtrack thanks to the stainless steel exhaust.

Produced from 1938, it's probably safe to say that the Volkswagen Beetle is one of the most iconic vehicles ever produced. Practical and reliable was the order of the day in the design of this classic, and not to mention affordability, which is how it became known as the peoples' car.

Over 80 years on the production line, the Beetle has gone through many changes, from rear split screen, to oval window, suspension changes and engine upgrades. It's a car that has evolved over time without moving too far away from its classic roots.

This Beetle has been given the proper attention it deserves, a full-respray in the owners choice of Jaguar Midnight Blue metallic, an uprated 1641cc air-cooled engine, stainless steel exhaust, and quick-shift gears to name a few features. Matt, the owner recently won this classic Beetle in a prize draw, he's after a new campervan so has decided to part with the car to fund his next motor.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Matt the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

When I took ownership of this Beetle I couldn't believe the condition, sublime.

Matt recently won this VW Beetle in a draw a few weeks ago, he was very pleasantly surprised. He was thinking about keeping the car for the future, however as he is in the market for a modern campervan, has decided to find a new custodian for this VW.

Matt reports the car has recently been restored to a very high standard, noting that it has; quickshift gears, uprated 1641cc engine, stainless steel exhaust, stainless steel bumpers, chrome 356 wheels, new hubcaps, new tyres (dated 2021), resprayed in Jaguar Midnight Blue Metallic, original black seating, Bluetooth radio player (neatly tucked in the glovebox). Matt will be happy to answer any of your questions about the beetle in the comments below.

Exterior

A motoring icon with style, character, and a huge amount of space - a car for the people.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with chrome 356 wheels all around, they look in great condition. We did notice a few little patches of corrosion to the surface, however you'll have to get really close to notice these spots.

The wheels are wrapped in Maxxis Mecotra 3's which are all dated 2021, and as you would expect have an excellent amount of tread. Please take a look at the photos and videos of the videos so you can take a closer look, and really appreciate the condition.

Bodywork

In line with the rest of the condition of the car, the bodywork looks excellent, it's clearly been through a restoration over the previous years. All the body panels appear straight, with all the panel gaps and shut lines even and true, very good for a car from the '60s. If we we're being really picky, the seals on the doors appear fresh, and therefore the doors can be a little difficult to shut, the seals will bed in over time.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a Jaguar Midnight Blue metallic, which pairs so well with the stainless steel brightwork. The car looks great under any light. The finish of the paint looks excellent, even in coat and colour, deep in lustre across every panel. We believe the paint would have been applied fairly recently due to its condition.

We did notice a very small area of wear on the driver's door, however, you'll have to get really close to notice.

Again, the images taken are from different angles and reflections to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition.

Glass and Trim

All look in excellent condition along with the rest of the car.

The trim and glass look in excellent condition with no signs of damage, cracks, chips, or discoloration. A little area of black paint is coming off around the driver's quarter window vent.

Please watch the detailed video to see the whole exterior in great detail.

Interior

The cabin of this beetle retains the original, quirky character of this car.

Seats and Carpets

The amount of care and attention on the restoration continues through to the interior, where everything is finished to a high standard. Matt reports the car features its original black vinyl seats, which are present in great condition within this Beetle.

Black carpets line the floors and are well fitted with no signs of major wear throughout. The door cards and headlining are also present in great condition, take a look for yourself in the photos and videos.

Dashboard

A period-correct dashboard is fitted and looks smart within the car interior. The speedo did show a little humidity on our visit, and Matt reports the speedo stopped working on the 5th of November.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A Moto-Lita wood-lined three-spoke steering wheel is fitted within the car, and presents in excellent condition, in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

Please take a look at the photos videos for a closer view of the interior.

Mechanics

An uprated 1642cc engine sits in the rear and is installed by air-cooled experts Wolfsburg Restos.

Engine and Gearbox

This uprated engine will comfortably keep up with modern traffic, and creates a performance-focused feel with its quick-shift gears.

A stainless steel exhaust system has also been fitted. Matt reports the car drives very well and starts on a push of a button. View the mechanical video, to see the car starting from cold, without any drama, and perform out on the open road. We've also captured videos and photos of the engine bay and underneath the car for you to view.

Suspension and Brakes

Just like the rest of the car, the suspension and brakes appear to have been given the proper attention during the restoration, providing the drivers with a comfortable ride with prompt stopping power.

The Beetle is known for its durability and there appear to be no issues with the way you would expect a '60s VW to drive. The owner reports no knocking noises from the brakes or suspension.

The Drive

With the combinations of the uprated engine and quick-shift gears, the car gets up to speed promptly. The stainless steel exhaust sounds excellent throughout the rev range. Matt reports a fun, quick drive in the Beetle and mentions the car is ready to drive away and be enjoyed.

Electrics and Other

Fitted with a Sony Bluetooth, USB, and Aux head unit which is neatly tucked away in the glove box. A great hiding spot, keeping the interior with its period look.

Please take a look at the photos for a detailed view of this car.

History and Paperwork

A RHD Beetle, with all the work you'd want doing completed. Finished in Jaguar Midnight blue with a 1641cc creates a very attractive package.

This car has clearly been given the attention it deserves by professionals and finished to a high level. In its current spec, we know it'll be a hit among the air-cooled community. Matt won the car in the competition a few weeks ago but finds that it will be better in the hands of a VW enthusiast and hopes to fund his search for a modern campervan.

The car has recently been restored to a very high standard, the car is light on paperwork and provenance, however has the following; Quickshift gears, uprated 1641cc engine, stainless steel exhaust, stainless steel bumpers, chrome 356 wheels, new hubcaps, new tyres (dated 2021), resprayed in Jaguar Midnight Blue Metallic, original black seating, Bluetooth radio player (neatly tucked in the glovebox).

Matt will be happy to answer any of your questions about the Beetle in the comments below.
