Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

The versatile VW Type 2 is best known and loved in its most iconic form: the Campervan.

Following the huge success of the T1 Split-Screen Beetle of the late 1930s, 1967 saw the introduction of the second-generation VW T2, commonly known as the Bay Window. The Type 2 (T2) was the second production model from the German manufacturer Volkswagen. The T2 is slightly larger and heavier than its predecessor, originally equipped with a ~47 BHP, 1.6L engine and a 12-volt electrical system. This fresh new design brought heaps of practicality while offering an affordable option for those looking to enjoy short weekends away, trips to the coast, or cross-country road trips without the added expense of accommodation.

This Type 2 (T1) "Splitscreen" camper was imported to the UK in 2008, ~40 years after its manufacture. It was fully restored, the engine too, and its colour was changed from the original red/white combination to an attractive and stand-out green over white. Coming to market from ~7 years of current ownership, this delightful camper is ready for many more adventures to come.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A VW bus changes the way you drive, it makes you relax and go with the flow and genuinely brings a smile to your face!

As a family favourite for many years, purchasing the splitscreen campervan was an opportunity for John, and his family to go on road trips and holidays. John tells us "As a family, we love getting away together to enjoy the great outdoors. Plus, we have a love of German cars, and our son was very much into Fillmore in Disney's film Cars, so it was a good excuse to buy one!". He goes on to say "The colour combo attracted us to it, and we had the opportunity to make some changes to the interior before we bought it. It gets looks whenever you use it on the road. It's not too flamboyant an example, so it gets appreciated by everyone".

As time goes by and the opportunity to use the campervan becomes less, John says "It's time to move on with our beloved campervan. My son is getting older, and we just don't have the time anymore to use the van as much as we would like. It would be great to see the van go to a genuine enthusiast who wants to use it". John will be on hand to answer any questions about the campervan in the comments section below.

Exterior

One beautifully presented splitscreen campervan, for any challenge big or small.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with a set of period VW wheels, these are finished with chrome hubcaps and the steel painted white. All appeared to be in great condition; we didn’t notice any damage, a polish would really enhance the wheels.

All tyres appeared to be in good visual condition, with no initial concerns about the remaining tread. Take a look through the pictures to see the details.

Bodywork

The bodywork of the VW appears to be in very good condition, as you'd expect for a restored example. All doors, the boot, and the engine bay open and close as expected. The panel gaps are well-aligned, and we didn’t notice any visible dents on any of the panels.

When John purchased the VW, some corrosion was noted on the front and the bottom of the doors. He had all the affected metal replaced and the van thoroughly inspected at the time, with new metalwork added where necessary. We’ve highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos. Please take the time to review all the media files for a comprehensive view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the vehicle for yourselves.

Paint

The green-over-white colourway is a beautiful combination for the "Splitty", perfectly capturing the late 60s style of the vehicle. The paint coverage is even across the car with no noticeable differences in colour, presenting to a great overall restored standard. There are some stone chips on the trim edges at the front and rear, as well as a couple of marks near the rear light section.

There is also some wear on the roof, with a slight mark and signs of corrosion on the outer lip, although these are subtle and required close inspection to notice. The images have been taken from various angles to give you a clear view of the car, just as you would see it in person. Please take the time to carefully assess the high-resolution images and videos provided to form your own opinion about the paint's condition.

Glass and Trim

The glass on the camper appears to be in excellent condition. The seals all seem to be in good order, with no or very little perishing.

The headlights and indicators are free from chips, as are the rear lights. Badges and emblems are present and correct.

Take a look through the exterior gallery and review the video. We guide you across all areas of the VW, as if you were standing there yourself, so you can see in greater detail how the car is presented.

Interior

With retro styling, cosy seating, and smart storage, the campervan blends nostalgia and functionality.

Seats and Carpets

The VW is equipped with cream and green vinyl seats, which are in great condition with minimal signs of wear. The rear seats are also in excellent shape, with no concerning issues noted, and seat belts are fitted here.

It’s the rear interior section that truly defines this. The furniture appears to be in excellent condition, with the cupboards offering plenty of storage space for weekends away and functioning smoothly, opening and closing as they should. A new floor and table has been fitted here.

Dashboard

The simplistic black driver’s dial looked great and was functioning as expected when we visited the car. The odometer read ~11,572 at the time of our visit.

The cream dash is in excellent condition. The dials, switches, and controls all appear to be in great shape, with surfaces free from fogging or scratching.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is a simple setup and looks to be in great condition. There are a couple of small cracks in the paint on the centre section, although nothing overly concerning.

The gloss black gear stick is in great shape, with only mild signs of use.

Mechanics

This campervan has been given any necessary maintenance over the years, including an engine recommission, replacement fuel lines and interior power inverter.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting up from cold, we noted no concerns, and the splitscreen camper performed without issue when running and out on the road. The gearbox worked well, producing no unwanted noises and raising no concerns regarding its performance while driving. We took the vehicle out on some local roads with John, to get a better feel for what this campervan is all about.

John lets us know a little more about the mechanical history of the VW and tells us, "The carbs have had a full rebuild, and around ~3 years ago, the fuel lines perished due to the ethanol content. I had fuel lines imported from the States and installed, which are more resistant to modern fuel". During the drive, we ran through the motions, taking the campervan through the gears and gaining an overview of how it performs, watch the video to see it in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The VW has been lowered a bit from factory specification, which many would argue makes it look better on the road. We noted no issues with the brakes whilst on the road, although these are more in-line with traditional motoring in terms of stopping power.

We cover the underside of the VW in more detail in our 'Mechanical Review' video.

The Drive

As John mentioned earlier "A VW camper changes the way you drive - they're not too fast so it makes you relax and go with the flow". These are cars to be enjoyed for sure, and this example is sure to bring a smile to everyone that sees it.

Electrics and Other

The VW features minimal electrical components, keeping in theme with its heritage. The interior does feature a smart retro radio in the dashboard area. During our time with the vehicle, we noticed no electrical faults, with all lights and gauges working as expected. All switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and are in great condition.

John lets us know a little more about the VW, telling us: "The interior floor and table have been changed. The VW has a sink and gas hob, and also a power inverter, so there is a UK mains plug socket in the cupboard too. The original table is retained in case you want to convert it to a bed. Rear seat belts are fitted too".

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~7 year ownership, this car was imported in 2008, has been fully restored since then and presents in excellent condition.

The campervan has undergone extensive work in recent years, including both restorative and mechanical maintenance. In 2017, the clutch and flywheel were removed and cleaned, with a replacement of the oil seal. The oil seal was then lubricated and refitted. The clutch was re-aligned and refitted, clutch release bearings were replaced, new gearshift coupling screws were added, and the inverter was repositioned under the rear seat. These works combined cost over £530. The odometer reads ~11,500, but as can be seen from the MOT history available, it has likely gone around the clock.

In 2016, upgrades included the removal and reinstallation of the engine and gearbox, cleaning of the torsion housing, welding of a broken mount, installation of a new clutch cable, and replacement of fuel hoses and the fuel filter. New brake pipes were fabricated, new engine oil and spark plugs were fitted, and the clutch was adjusted.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Finn,

The advert on Pistonheads is our advert, the price is not the reserve, it is our guide price.

Thanks,
Colin.

Hello John. Lovely van. Can you please tell me where it was imported from and is it a 1967? Somewhere it says 1973 which would indicate a later Brazil made van. Also has it had the reduction boxes removed? Tks Mark
