Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

One of the world's most adored cars, lovingly restored to retain the classic look of the famous VW Beetle.

Produced from 1938, it's probably safe to say that the Volkswagen Beetle is one of the most iconic vehicles ever produced. Practical and reliable was the order of the day in the design of this classic, not to mention affordability, which is how it became known as the peoples' car.

Over 80 years on the production line, the Beetle has gone through many changes, from rear split screen, to oval window, suspension changes and engine upgrades. It's a car that has evolved over time without moving too far away from its classic roots.

Lee has taken his lovely Beetle to the next level, and has enjoyed every step of it. He was very fussy on getting a car from the 60's as the base, this being a 1968 example, and it has been totally renovated, including a new engine. Presented in excellent condition, we think this car will be giving a new owner years of classic motoring ahead.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Lee the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

With 4 Beetles previously owned, it was only a matter of time before another one was added to the list. It’s safe to say I may have got carried away with this one!

Lee is a bit of a VW nut, especially when it comes to the famous VW Beetles, as you may have guessed with the 4 previously owned. This particular Beetle was purchased in 2019, as a usable classic.

Knowing full well it needed a few things addressed, it wasn't long before the decision was made to go the whole hog on the Beetle and give it a full exterior restoration, along with a full mechanical overhaul, which included a new engine.

Now the work is completed, he actually feels it's a bit too good for him or his wife to drive! As a result, the car is coming to auction with us. Lee will be more than happy to answer any questions you have in the comments below.

Exterior

What started with a view to a tidy up, soon ballooned to restoration in original colour, putting this Beetle back to its former glory.

Wheels and Tyres

The steel wheels have been painted to match the body and are looking in an excellent condition. These have been finished with chrome hubcaps.

The Toyo 330 tyres are all matching and in as new condition. Please take a look at the gallery for detailed images.

Bodywork

The Beetle has been taken apart at the time of paint, which can be seen in the restoration photographs. The refitting of the panels is excellent, with a great deal of care and attention to detail to ensure that everything aligns just as it should, with a nice equal gap. Any rot/rust was cut out as pictured, leaving this car in excellent condition.

Please take your time to look through the hi-resolution images we have taken for a more detailed look at this German classic.

Paint

Finished in the original colour, the Beetle is certainly looking factory fresh. The car has not covered any miles since the restoration was carried out, which is reflected in the condition.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections showing off the 1968 Beetle at its very best, as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition of the exterior.

Glass and Trim

The glass on the car all looks to be in excellent condition. There are some light age related scratches on some elements, as you would expect to see on any vehicle of this age. The seals all look to be in good order, and have been replaced where necessary if there was any perishing.

The chrome work for the handles and trim down the swage line is all original, and does have some very light tarnishing which can be seen in places. The headlights and indicators are free from any chips, as are the rear lights, and the chrome work for these is in excellent condition, as are the bumpers.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a more detailed look at the exterior.

Interior

Taking you straight back to 1968, the Beetle is pretty much as it was the day it left the factory!

Seats and Carpets

The seats have been fitted with what is believed to be the original spec vinyl items, and these are in very good condition with no signs of wear to the front or rear seats of note. The door cards are finished in a similar material, in keeping with the stylistic era.

The carpets have been replaced and are in nice condition with no wear to be seen, other than a few marks on the driver’s heel pad. Inside the boot is well presented with everything looking as it should do. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard doesn't look to have been repainted, as there are a few small age related marks which can be seen. There is just the odometer fitted in the way of instruments, which is showing 13,213 miles. Lee mention that this number is the total covered by this vehicle, and no miles since new engine was fitted.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The Steering wheel looks to be the original, which has the Wolfsburg logo to the centre. This is in good condition with minimal wear.

The gear knob has been replaced with a wooden item, finished with a VW logo Badge. Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images of the interior.

Mechanics

Powered by a new 1500cc engine, this Beetle has not even been run in yet.

Engine and Gearbox

Lee has ensured that the mechanical side of things have not been left out. This has gone as far as a completely new engine, which was only used to record the 'On the Road' video you can find below. It's quite clear to see when looking at the engine bay, that there are many new parts fitted, and the bay is really well presented. View the history and paperwork gallery too to see the parts and work carried out.

As you can see from our Mechanical Review video, the 1500 cc starts up as it should and runs lovely with no untoward noises coming from the Beetle. The gear change is as you would expect, and the car pulls well through the gears.

Suspension and Brakes

As part of the mechanical overhaul, the suspension was not left out, and was given a full check over, with any parts needing replacement taken care of.

Safety first, and again, the brakes have been given a new lease of life with new discs and pads fitted, along with hoses and handbrake cables.

The Drive

Who doesn't love a Beetle! You can hear them coming and instantly know what it is with the distinctive air-cooled engine. The ride is smooth and as quick as you would expect for the newly built 1500cc. This is ready to be enjoyed by the new keeper, who Lee hopes will care for it as he has. He is also hoping to maybe see it at some VW shows.

Electrics and Other

The electrics in the Beetle, as you probably know, are quite minimal, but what is there is working as it should. There is some light wear to the switches, but they are all still perfectly usable.

History and Paperwork

An extensive history file with a huge amount of invoices, this freshly restored Beetle from 1968 has got to be a lovely buy for someone looking to enter classic ownership.

Don't dare add up all the invoices that come with the Beetle is our advice, although if you do, as the new keeper, you will see just how well it has been cared for over the years by various owners. From new floors to new engine, this Beetle has had it all. Even though the Beetle is MOT exempt, Lee put the car through a test for peace of mind. It passed with no advisories and is valid until the 13th January 2023.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition.
Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi, just to say I think this looks lovely and appears to have been restored to a good standard. I am currently researching the market to get back into Beetles after many years. I won’t be able to bid on this as I will be buying later in the year, but I do wish you lots of luck selling this and hope it goes to a good home.

Hi, the V5 says the car is black, the text above says it was repainted in its original colour, was it black when you purchased it?

I think you have to assume the car was originally black ….

Just to add some further information to this, a HPI check says the car was Blue previously, a colour change to Black in 1981. It is very easy to change the colour on a V5, so it’s best not to make an assumption on that basis. A check of the VIN number with VW archives may well have a record of the colour, I don’t believe Beetle’s have a plate that records colour on it like a Type 2 Camper/Bus would do from the same era. Best, Kulraj – Trade Classics

Can you tell me the source of the engine ? Was it a short block or cylinder heads and carb too ?
