Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consinger

The T2 model, known for its versatility, has been adapted into various forms, such as the Transporter, Kombi, and Microbus - however, its most iconic and widely recognised version is the beloved Campervan.

Following the massive success of the T1 Split Screen, 1967 saw the production of the second-generation VW T2. Commonly known as the "bay-window" or, in this case, the "early bay" (pre-1971), the T2 is slightly larger and heavier than its predecessor. It was originally equipped with a 47BHP, 1.6L engine and a 12-volt electrical system.

Westfalia conversions are the crème de la crème for VWs, making them the perfect van for weekend getaways. This one is no exception; having been upgraded with a reliable 2.5-litre Subaru engine, the T2 is not only dependable but also offers decent performance. It comes to market after ~9 years with our vendor.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Tony the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

We’ve had plenty of memorable trips away in Ernie, and he never fails to draw a crowd at the campsite or wherever we park.

This 1969 example was imported to the UK by Tony’s friend, who restored the bodywork and converted the engine to a 2.5-litre Subaru.

Now in its tenth year of ownership, the T2 hasn’t been getting the attention it once did due to Tony’s wife suffering some recent health problems impacting mobility. Hence, the tough decision to sell this iconic classic campervan with a modern twist.

Please feel free to ask Tony any questions in the comments below.

Exterior

A 1969 model, this T2 is more commonly known as an "early bay," complete with louvred windows and a pop-top roof.

Wheels and Tyres

Steel wheels finished in an olive colour to match the bumpers are in good condition. They feature Porsche hubcaps on the front and domed VW caps on the wider rear wheels. The tyres are in good condition with plenty of tread remaining.

Please see the image gallery for a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

The bodywork was restored ten years ago by Tony’s friend - he imported the T2 from the United States.

Looking around the van, the bodywork appears to be in good condition, we did notice some visible corrosion on the gutters around the top of the van. The front doors align well. The side door does sit slightly proud, but it may just need adjusting. At the rear, the engine cover and rear door fit well with even gaps.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos. Please take the time to review all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the car's condition for yourself.

Paint

The paintwork is finished in what is thought to be the original cream colour and presents very well. The bumpers and wheels are finished in a period-correct olive colour and are in good condition, with just a tiny scratch on the corner of the rear bumper.

The images have been taken from various angles to show the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos to form your own opinion of the paint's condition.

Glass and Trim

All of the windows appear in good condition, with no noticeable scratches. The louvred side windows operate as they should, and all the seals look good.

The headlights are in good condition, with no damage to the lenses, and the same can be said for the oval-style rear light lenses.

Interior

Retrimmed seats with the original Westfalia furniture maintain the retro feel of the early bay window.

Seats and Carpets

All of the seats in the T2 have been retrimmed in cream and beige with matching door cards. These are all in excellent condition. Tony even confessed that the bed is “more comfortable than the one at home”.

The carpets in the front are in good, clean condition, and a chequered floor has been fitted in the rear of the van, which is also in good order.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The black vinyl dashboard is original, with a couple of small splits. The instruments are in good condition, and the odometer shows a reading of approximately 25,541 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more high-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A wood-rimmed, three-spoke steering wheel has been fitted and is in nice condition with no signs of excessive wear. A Scat gear lever with a golf ball-style gear knob has also been installed.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

A welcome improvement to the '60s VW is the more modern 2.5-litre Subaru flat-four engine.

Engine and Gearbox

Tony’s friend installed the Subaru engine around ten years ago. It has been a successful conversion and has proved very reliable. With a flick of the key, the 2.5-litre starts up without hesitation and runs smoothly, emitting the famous Subaru flat-four engine note.

The four-speed gearbox changes gears smoothly, and gear selection is easy.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension sits slightly lower than a standard van, but the ride remains smooth, with no knocks or bangs from either corner. Bringing the T2 to a stop in a straight line, the brakes perform as expected with no issues reported.

The steering has an electric conversion installed, but this has been disconnected as Tony prefers the more natural feel of the T2. However, he reports that it should be able to be reinstated.

The Drive

Being in a 1960s campervan, you’ll never fail to turn heads wherever you go, and 99% of the time, if you're on a campsite, you can expect to be engaged in conversation about this classic VW.

On the road, the drive is brilliant, helped, of course, by the reliability and extra power from the upgraded engine.

Electrics and Other

All of the switchgear appears original and has a small amount of patina, but everything is functioning correctly. The original radio is also in place, with a set of aftermarket speakers mounted inside the front panel.

History and Paperwork

Substantial paperwork from around 11 years of ownership suggests that the T2 has been well cared for.

There is a good collection of invoices for parts purchased, and work carried out over the years. Most recently (within the last ~2,000 miles), a new alternator and starter motor were fitted, along with a replacement timing belt.

Coming from ~9 years ownership, the V5 is present and shows just one previous UK keeper; Tony’s friend, who imported the van and carried out all of the restoration work. This is a nice example with a few welcome improvements, making it the ideal campervan for those who want a retro feel with enhanced performance and reliability.

We've done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5, and also an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our view on the car based on information provided by the seller in the listing above. However, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high-resolution detail. This has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa, and take your time to review everything in this listing to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time—we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, please ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car—just like in a traditional auction house.

Hi Tony,

Does the van have a heater installed? Is this connected to the Subaru engine or is it a separate auxillary system if so?

Best regards,

Charles
