Introduction

Isaac Wass
Professional Consigner

A truley iconic car with a huge following for all the right reasons, this uprated 1.6L air-cooled Beetle is ready for a summer of sun.

Produced from 1938, it's safe to say that the Volkswagen Beetle is one of the most iconic vehicles ever produced. Over 80 years on the production line, the Beetle has gone through many changes, from rear split screen, to oval window, suspension changes and engine upgrades. It's a car that has evolved over time without moving too far away from its classic roots.

Practical and reliable was the order of the day in the design of this classic, and not to mention affordability, which is how it became known as the peoples' car.

This Beetle is coming to market from 8 years ownership, inherited by the vendor from their late father. It's a classic VW coming to market with a few sporty modifications, and with a very keen reserve, this car must go!

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Isaac after meeting Reece the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A Beetle enthusiast, Reece has thoroughly enjoyed ownership over the past 8 years.

This VW was left to Reece by his late father, they'd enjoyed ownership in the family for nearly a decade. A house move is now in progress, and so Reece has been somewhat forced to find the car a new home.

The car has a number of modifications, most notably the OZ wheels and upgraded seats. Reece will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

Full of character, the Beetle offers iconic classic looks that are instantly recognisable.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with 15" OZ racing alloys, finished in silver with centre caps. The wheels look in overall ok condition, although do show signs of wear and minor curbing marks.

The front tyres are Pirelli P6000's dated 2009, and the rear are fitted with Riken Road Performance's dated 2017. Dice valve caps are also fitted to complete the look. Please take a look at the photos and videos of the videos so you can take a closer look of the condition.

Bodywork

In line with the rest of the condition of the car, the bodywork looks great for a classic Beetle. All the body panels appear straight, with all the panel gaps and shut lines look ok. If we we're being really picky, the side steps could do with some attention to really smarten the exterior to a new level.

We also noticed some signs of corrosion under the paint, for example on the rear offside wheel arch, watch the video review of the car, to see the bodywork up close from various angles.

Paint

Finished in a lovely "Peugeot Rouge Brilliant" it pairs well with the brightwork. The car is eyecatching under any light. The finish of the paint looks good, even in coat and colour, deep in lustre across every panel.

Again, the images taken are from different angles and reflections to show the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition.

Glass and Trim

The trim and glass look in good condition with no major signs of damage, cracks, chips, or discolouration. We did notice some large areas of pitting to the front bumper.

Please watch the detailed video to see the whole exterior in great detail.

Interior

The classic cabin retains much of the 60s styling - and has chrome badges and switches.

Seats and Carpets

Fitted with grey cloth seats throughout with retro patterns, the seats appear in good condition, however, would benefit from a deep clean. We think these are from a later Beetle.

Grey carpets line the floors and are well fitted with no signs of major wear throughout, there is sound deadening in place under the carpets too. The door cards and headlining are also present in ok condition, we did notice some small chips to the paint on the bottoms of the doors in place, take a look for yourself in the photos and videos.

Dashboard

A period dashboard, painted to match the exterior bodywork as was the style of these older Beetles. It looks smart, in line with the rest of the interior.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A Mountney sports 4-spoke steering wheel is fitted within this Beetle, offering nimble steering for this car. There is also an aftermarket gear lever and knob fitted as pictured.

Mechanics

A 1600cc air-cooled engine, keeping up with modern traffic shouldn't be an issue with this Beetle.

Engine and Gearbox

This uprated engine will comfortably keep up with modern traffic, we believe the car is fitted with a 1.6L unit based on the V5 document. The car starts from cold with no issues. We were not able to take the car out as it is not currently taxed or insured, the owner Reece reports the car drives well with its manual gearbox.

Please take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, and for a closer look underneath.

Suspension and Brakes

The VW basic running gear is known for its durability, and the seller informs us there are no issues with the way you would expect a 1960's VW to drive. The owner has told us that there are no issues with knocking noises coming from the brakes or suspension, we can't verify this as we were not able to take the car out for a drive.

The Drive

The exhaust sounds great on start up. Reece reports a fun, quick drive in the Beetle and mentions the car is ready to drive away and be enjoyed.

Electrics and Other

Reece reports that all the electrics are fully working to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

This Beetle looks to be a solid example, coming to market with a very keen reserve, if you're looking for some classic motoring this summer, this entry level Beetle is worth a look.

The car has most likely received attention over time given the condition it presents in, but the car is light on paperwork and provenance. Reece has been the registered keeper for the previous 8 years as it was gifted to him from his late father.

Reece will be happy to answer any of your questions about the Beetle in the comments below.

We’ve done all include seller checks, including photo ID, and V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.
