This is a superb little Karmann Ghia owned by Julie for over five years – it was originally a Californian import over ten years ago. It’s been professionally restored and in excellent condition. Keith now needs garage space so this car has got to be sold.

Recent Buyer Review – Simon Welsh on 1st May “Found my ideal 90’s sports car on Trade Classics. Living in Bournemouth and the car being in the Midlands I relied heavily on the advert, photos and videos.

On picking the car up I wasn’t disappointed. Everything was as it had been described. So I got straight into it and drove home. What a drive put a smile on my face.

Thanks very much Trade Classics and I’m now looking out for my next classic to add to the collection.”.

THE CAR & JULIE

Julie has owned this car along with her husband Keith since 2014. It’s been her daily drive car for many years and has driven on trips to Cornwall too.

Julie and Keith had been looking for a classic car for a while and were considering either a Karmann or a similar era Volvo. This example came up for sale in Somerset, originally being a Californian car that was imported some time ago.

Space is at a bit of a premium for Julie now,so as the Karmann can’t stay in the garage, Julie is looking for a new home for it.

EXTERIOR

This striking Karmann Ghia coupe is finished in yellow and comes from California originally, hence the LHD configuration.

Wheels & Tyres
Sitting on 15″ minilite style wheels, and wrapped in Toyo tyres all around, the black coloured wheels give the car a modern edge. Both wheels and tyres present in good condition, as captured in the photographs.

Bodywork
Julie bought this car in the condition it stands today, the previous owners having carried out any necessary work on the car. The panel gaps and shut-lines on this car are great. When we viewed the car, we didn’t spot any corrosion to be wary of, take a look at the video review to see the detail.

Paint
Finished in yellow with a white top, a respray completed by a former keeper, Julie informs us that the car was originally orange. The paintwork on the car was even in finish and colour across all the panels and looks in great condition; we didn’t observe swirl marks etc. View the images and extensive video review.

Glass and Trim
The glass on the car is in great condition and the same can be said for the trim too. Julie mentions that they fitted new chrome bumpers on the car, and it shows.

INTERIOR

The interior is finished in black throughout and looks good as a contrast to the yellow exterior.

Seats and Carpets
Black vinyl covered seats and black carpets, the interior is smart on this Karmann. The vinyl seats look in good condition, no major wear visible on the usual places you might expect. Take a look through the photographs.

Dashboard
The dash on this car is wood trimmed, and has been topped with Alcantara. It presents in good condition, and the dials look good too, watch the video review for the detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick
A classic plastic steering wheel and a wooden gear knob put you in control of this car from the cabin. Both present in good condition, see the details in the pictures.

MECHANICS

Julie took the time to take us on a trip in the car, putting it through its paces.

Engine and Gearbox
We did our usual cold start of the car and the 4 pot engine sprang into life on it’s first request. No untoward smoke from the exhaust on the initial start-up and the engine pulled us along without issue. You’ll see in the videos with Julie that she’s able to take the car through it’s 4 gears with ease. Review the footage for the details.

Suspension and Brakes
On our trip we went on some fairly rough roads, but the car handled well and it was very comfortable as a passenger. Julie also confirmed that the car brakes without issue, discs on the front and drums on the back.

The Drive
A pleasant drive through the local area on a sunny day. The engine was purring away behind and the car attracted a lot of friendly smiles.

Electrics and Other
Julie tells us that everything works as it should and that she has also installed a couple of modifications; a new stereo system, a small internal heater for use in the winter months.

HISTORY

Julie and her husband Keith bought this car back in 2015, having been looking for a Karmann Ghia or similar type of car in a Volvo P1800. In their ownership they have maintained the car and used it as a daily driver. The car originally came from California, and was imported to the UK by one of the previous owners.

The car is showing just over 10,622 miles as of 17.09.2019.

OUR SUMMARY

The Karmann Ghia has a real charm about it and is very much of-era in this colour combination. A lightweight body and engine make it a real pleasure to drive.

The creation of 3 companies combining, VW/Karmann/Ghia, the car was a success when launched and some 400,000+ cars were produced over a long production run. This car has been used regularly and as a result is robust and ready to be enjoyed by the new custodian.
