Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

The epitome of the campervan - the VW T2 has become a way of life for many.

Following the huge success of the T1 Split Screen, 1967 brought us the production of the second generation VW T2. Commonly known as the bay window, or the early bay for examples like this. The T2 is slightly larger and heavier than its predecessor and was given the 47BHP, 1.6L engine and a 12-volt electrical system.

This T2 Bay Window camper was imported from the states in 1983, 12 years after manufacture. It was restored in the UK as pictured, and a colour change actioned from its original red/white colourway to the attractive vibrant blue over white.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Sabine the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've always loved the idea of owning a classic VW campervan, and so glad I've had the chance, taking this one to Germany and back.

Sabine has always had a special place in her heart for Volkswagen Campers, she loves the shape and fun they offer on every journey. She decided to jump at the chance of owning one this summer, and bought this one and after having had it checked over, went straight on a trip to Germany with it. The car was imported from California to the UK in 1983, and restored here upon arrival, some photo documentation of the process included.

The car comes to market much sooner than anticipated, the main reason being that although the camper was great on the trip to Germany, the dogs really didn't agree with staying in the car! So after a short ownership, it comes to auction with us. Sabine will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the T2 Camper in the comments below.

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

Instantly recognisable, these bay window campervans offer the authentic van-life experience.

Wheels and Tyres

The campervan is fitted with cream painted steel wheels along with chrome centre hubs, the wheels appear in generally good used condition and would benefit from a refurb in some small areas.

The tyres are new items fitted in the last few months, Sabine wanted to find new tyres which would suit the T2 and opted for white-walled "Classic Street Tyres", CL-31's dated 2021. She reports coincidentally the white wall tyres start blue, yet will eventually fade to white with time and use. For the moment, they match the paintwork. Take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this VW T2 looks generally in good condition, with all the panel gaps around the car looking OK, what you would expect for a 70s camper. The car has had a restoration in the past, and inevitable routine work as and when needed.

Generally speaking the car looks to not be suffering from corrosion that these cars are often known for, likely due to the previous restoration actioned. There are a few small areas as pictured, and some redness on display on the surface to the bottom of wheel arches etc, but not that bad we think. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a vibrant blue and classic white, the paint appeared in good condition on our visit. The finish is to a good standard, with even coverage and colour across each panel. There are a small number of marks like door edges being chipped in some placed and some cracking to the white paint as pictured.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this example looks good and in line with the mileage and previous restoration, we didn't notice any major chips, cracks, or discolouration on our visit. The window seals are showing their age and in line with the rest of the condition of the van. The new door seals look as if they need tweaking and aligning in areas.

The car does have a pop-top canvas, which Sabine decided not to open on our visit, as she reports it hasn't been used for several years and may require some recommissioning before use.

Interior

A light and bright interior with the additional option of the pop top gives a great space within the camper.

Seats and Carpets

Fitted with cream leatherette seats, they look in great condition within this VW cabin. The front cabin is lined with matching cream carpets on the floor and door cards. We noticed a little patch of damp, Sabine reports an unknown leak.

A rock and roll pull-out bed/seats can be found in the rear, with chequered patterned cushions and curtains, all present in great condition. Please take a look at the extensive media for a detailed view of the cabin.

Dashboard

Featuring it's original VW T2 dashboard, the dashboard reflects the age and use of the van. Sabine reports all the dials are working well to her knowledge. The odometer showed a reading of ~42,980 miles on our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear stick are in line with the interior and in useable condition with the expected amount of wear from a vehicle that is 51 years old.

Mechanics

A 1600cc air cooled engine powers this T2, it offers the authentic VW campervan experience.

Engine and Gearbox

We've captured a detailed mechanical video that shows the car out on the road and a view around the engine bay. On the short trip out, the car went through the gears without issue.

Please take a look at the detailed media pack to see a closer view of the engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

The brakes and suspension components are said to be functional and in working condition, Sabine commenting the brakes could do with some future attention to improve performance.

The Drive

The forward control driving position is part of the charm of driving these campervans, and once you adjust to the style, it cannot fail to place a smile on your face.

Sabine loves the practicality and versatility the T2 offered her over the summer, taking the car on a trip to Germany and back.

Electrics and Other

The vehicle electrics are said to be functional. Sabine reports the passengers window winder needs re-fitting. The van is sold with a full-size exterior cover as pictured.

History and Paperwork

If you're in the market for a usable campervan, this Californian import bay window is ready to be enjoyed.

Coming out of ~4 months of ownership with Sabine, the car comes with various receipts for parts during restoration and maintenance work over the years. Take a look at the media to see all the history included within the sale of the car.

The van features a roof rack, a rock and roll bed, chequered cushions, new leatherette front seat covers, cream carpeted cabin, and new white-wall tyres. Sabine will be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.
