Introduction

A recently restored ex-east coast van with camper facilities - simply perfect for a day trips and road trips.

Volkswagen's ubiquitous Type 2 van was more than an icon for the counterculture, it's interior packaging, reliability and durability became a capable workhorse across the globe. Its roots obviously stem from the Beetle, but unlike its little sister that spawned tens of dozens of variations, it can be recognised as two distinctly different vehicles. Early Split Screen versions are firmly planted in the collectors market and often command huge premiums, so the later Bay Window versions become the next best option.

In truth, these post-1967 versions are a lot easier to live with, more powerful, safer and stronger and they've become just as respected as the original. With more than 6 decades of production, the VW Type 2 is one of the most significant Volkswagen’s which helps cement its reputation as a popular choice for many people looking for a cool yet practical leisure vehicle. This means that there are literally hundreds for sale at one time, so you can afford to take your time and pick the best.

Andy's 1972 T2 Campervan benefits from being an American East-coast import, which means it has been preserved by the lack of humidity and that heritage adds to the credibility of these surfer tinged buses. In addition to this, it has benefited from a total UK restoration with accurate originality following its arrival to UK shores in 2013, and is fully furnished for day trips, holidays or potential hire.

This auction listing was written from information and images supplied by Andy, the vehicle's owner.

Meet the owner

We used 'Meridith' for many years on family holidays and day trips - so many fond memories.

Andy has decided to call his VW Meridith, which has been mainly used on family holidays and day trips. It also earned its keep as use for wedding and event hire during the summer months. Andy has decided to place Meridith on the market, as it's not been used much and it needs to find a new owner for it to explore.

Exterior

Finished in Neptune blue, this campervan is beautifully presented and ready for big adventures.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels and tyres are in good condition, with the tyres offering plenty of life and grip.

Bodywork

As a vehicle subject to a recent restoration, the general condition is very solid as to be expected. The flat panels show no major signs of rippling and the van has been spared of everyday knocks and dents. The underside also looks solid from studying the images.

Paint

The paint coverage is good and well applied, the quality is consistent and deep as you can see in the images and videso.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in good condition too, with just age-related wear. No chips and major scratches. The trim and glass rubber is in excellent condition.

Interior

The interior finishing of the camper section is very inviting and well-executed.

Seats and Carpets

The front seats and carpets are in excellent condition, the original seats being subject to reupholstering. The quality of the interior restoration is continued out to the rear of the van. The rear wooden fittings, seats and appliances are of decent quality and in very good condition with light use. Please view the video to show how inviting and tastefully finished it is. The headlining is ply-wood finished too.

Dashboard

Wear and tear of the dashboard and controls are representative of the age of the vehicle. There is some damage to the plastic facia, but all controls are said to be functional. It comes with a new Pioneer radio and door speakers.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear stick are in line with the interior and in useable condition with the expected amount of wear from a vehicle that is almost 50 years old. The gearshift is an EMPI quick shift item.

Mechanics

The recently rebuilt 2-litre engine should give the new owner plenty of confidence.

Engine and Gearbox

The easy nature of the renewal and replacement of engines means that the 2-litre air-cooled engine may not be the original, but this is not a factor for these vehicles. The unit has benefited by a strip down and rebuilt with a new carburettor. It is said to run well with no major problems.

Suspension and Brakes

The brakes and suspension components are said to be fully functional and are in good working condition. The brake pipes have come up as an advisory in its last MOT and are likely to need attention at some point.

The Drive

The forward control driving position is actually a fun experience, and once you adjust to the style of driving it cannot fail to place a smile on your face. The big steering wheel offers good leverage. Obviously not a vehicle to be hurried, its practicality and versatility is the main draw.

Electrics and Other

The vehicle electrics are said to be fully functional. For the passenger and overnighters, the added bonus of a 12V inverter for 240V items ensures that creature comforts are catered for. There is a Smev Cooker for a cuppa which is safe and frugal on energy.

History and Paperwork

Following a full restoration, the van has been kitted out with top-grade furnishings.

As a recent import, it's not uncommon for vehicles to come with no documentation of its previous life but it has not done much more than 3,000 miles over the last 5 years.

The complete nut and bolt restoration and respray of the van were carried out in 2013, following its import from San Francisco in 2013 by VW specialists, Morecambe and Wize Sales Ltd.

The 2-litre engine was stripped down and rebuilt with a new carburettor and the whole inside was reupholstered using the original VW seats. A new Rock 'n Roll pull out bed was fitted, an electric hook-up, a Smev cooker, double roof bed and new rear and front seat belts. The van has been Waxoyl'd underneath and comes with a recent MOT.

Good luck, too many unanswered questions for me to bid higher. Looks like a good van though.

Seems a shame that questions don’t get answered or not published. I would have considered bidding had realistic answers been provided, not just mine, but the rightful queries about the engine from another bidder. Good luck with the sale.

Hi, I notice it has a centre mount carb. Can you please advise if any maintenance has been done to it. I’ve not seen that set up of a carb on a Type4 engine before. Normally they have Dual carbs or FI.

Also can you confirm if the heaters are operational. From the photos it looks like the engine compartment heater booster fan is missing. Thanks.

Hi,
Sadly, the van is too far away for me to view, but I am still interested. Are there any issues, minor or otherwise, you would advise might need addressing?
Regards,
Dave
