Introduction

Matt Nolan
Professional Consigner

The epitome of a campervan - the Volkswagen T2 is a way of life for many.

The Volkswagen Type 2 first appeared in 1950s as a forward control light commercial vehicle. As one of the forerunners of the modern cargo and passenger vans the Type 2 gave rise to many competitors, although none would quite gain the same reputation or following. The T2 gained a lot of its popularity during the counterculture movement of the 1960s, and became known as the "Hippie Van".

Production eventually moved to Brazil and which ceased production in December of 2013, due to the introduction of stricter safety regulations.

In ’67 we saw the second generation of the T2 introduced, being a 1974 model it was often called the “Late bay”. The van had lost its distinctive split front windshield and was considerably heavier than its predecessor.

This campervan was originally owned by Kelly's mum, sadly she passed away recently, so Kelly needs to find her mum's van a new owner - ideally Kelly wants a true T2 enthusiast to take over the baton and look after the van.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Matt after meeting Kelly the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Kelly and her mum loved this VW campervan, they had it completely restored with an interior built to their specification.

Kelly's mum originally purchased the van to be able to spend more time with her grandchildren. She found the van online and it required a complete restoration which she had carried out along with completely stripping the interior out, and having it rebuilt to her specification.

A new fridge was fitted along with a basin, and cooler. New power steering and front disc brakes have been fitted along with a conversion to unleaded fuel.

Kelly will do her best to answer any questions you may have about the camper in the comments below, please take a look at the extensive photos and videos of the car in the photographic and video media below.

Exterior

One beautifully presented camper ready for big and small adventures.

Wheels and Tyres

The van is fitted with white wheels with blue centre caps, the wheels appear generally good condition and would benefit from a deep clean.

The wheels are wrapped in Debica tyres dated 2003, yet appears to have a good amount of usable tread for the new owner to drive away on. But we would recommend a change in the near future as a safety measure.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this VW T2 looks in very good condition, with all the panel gaps around the car look to align very well for a '70s camper.

During our visit we didn't spot any obvious dinks down the flanks of the car, everything looking crisp and sharp while standing very straight and true. We did notice some cracking in the paint work and bubbling around the front and rear bumpers and down the offside of the vehicle.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

The van was resprayed to Kelly's mum's specification; a lovely Pale Sea Blue over white. The paint appeared in very good condition on our visit, finished to a good standard, with even coverage and colour across each panel. We did notice some areas of bubbling and cracking around the front and rear of the van.

Again, please take time to review all the images and videos showing the paint from different angles and reflections, to assess the condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this example looks great and in line with the mileage and ownership, we didn't notice any chips, cracks, or discolouration on our visit.

The window seals look good too and in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

Interior

One fully kitted out interior, with vibrant tiles and a light and airy kitchen, living room and bed.

Seats and Carpets

The driver's cabin features two blue vinyl seats with plenty more space for passengers in the rear of the camper.

The seats throughout have been re-upholstered by professionals and reflect with the rest of the interior in great condition throughout. Kelly's mum made sure not to miss a single detail during the restoration.

The rear of the van features attractive floor tiles to complete the '70s theme.

Dashboard

A simple plastic dashboard finished in black appears in good condition, in line with the age and mileage.

The original dials, switches and knobs all looking in good condition throughout. ~92,596 was recorded on the odometer during our visit.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with a Wolfsburg Castle Volkswagen three-spoke steering wheel, the wheel appears in great condition along with the 8-ball gear shifter.

Please take a look at the detailed 360 tour of this interior.

Mechanics

This T2 has been given mechanical treatment over the restoration, including the addition of power steering and an unleaded conversion.

Engine and Gearbox

We captured a cold start video of the bay window which can be found in the mechanical video, the car started straight away with little fuss at all, and no known issues were present during our visit.

Suspension and Brakes

Kelly tells us that this VW received a front disc brake conversion and power steering during the restoration process.

Kelly also reports to us that the van drives just as it should, with no unusual knocks or noises coming from the suspension. The van hasn't been used very much at all, in fact it hadn't been driven for several weeks before our On the Road video. You'll hear a slight rubbing on one of the brake discs.

The Drive

The forward control driving position is very fun experience - anybody can pick up very quickly. The steering wheel offers good leverage especially with its recently installed power steering. This van will not fail to put a smile on your face.

Electrics and Other

Kelly's reports that to her knowledge all of the electrics are functional and operational, in line with the rest of the condition of the van.

History and Paperwork

One highly desirable T2 bay window camper - recently restored and kitted out, ready to go on so many fun adventures.

This van is coming out of ~2 years family ownership. Take a look at the media to see all the history included within the sale of the car, including the extensive parts and work receipts. The van is registered as a historic vehicle making it MOT and road tax exempt.

Kelly's daughter will be more than happy to answer any questions you have about the car in the comments below.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.
