Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

The unmissable VW Campervan - an unmistakeable expression of freedom.

The T2 was introduced to the world in '67 with an improved 1.6L engine, as well as upgraded to run on 12V. The Type 2 lost its distinctive split front windscreen, however it gained a bay window and became famous in its own right. The Type 2 remained in production in Brazil until December 2013, latterly with a water-cooled VW Polo engine.

This particular T2 was carefully selected by Steve to enjoy and complete as a project during lockdown. Over that time he has worked on 'Sheldon', with it now ready to be used and enjoyed for the upcoming summer.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after liaising with Steve the owner.

Meet the owner

A real VW camper fan, Steve has had a lot of fun working on this T2 and driving it when possible.

Steve is the proud owner of this lovely T2, it was purchased as a usable project to work on and use during the pandemic. After bringing it up to such a standard and not getting as much use as he liked, Steve has made the decision to sell.

Steve told us "As any T2 enthusiast will tell you all V’dub busses have their own name and personalities ‘Sheldon’ is no exception, he was purchased during the challenges of 2020 to act as a bit of a project and a way to escape for day trips and staycations! He has been a reliable friend during these trying times, but sadly due to the impact of the crisis the difficult decision has been taken to part with him".

Exterior

Featuring the distinctive T2 bay window, this example looks the part in Baby Blue with white wall tyres.

Wheels and Tyres

Featuring chrome hub caps and eye-catching whitewall tyres. Each wheel is in good condition inline with their age and mileage, with what looks to be a little wear/surface corrosion on the hubcaps.

The tyres also have plenty of tread on them, ready for their next adventure.

Bodywork

The bodywork on this camper looks great, all the shut lines look good from the photos provided. We did notice some small areas of rust, and a little bubbling on the front panel.

Overall a really pleasant example ready to be enjoyed. Please view the exterior videos and photos to appreciate the bodywork.

Paint

Finished in a classic Baby Blue with white roof and bumpers. The paint looks even in finish and coat across each panel.

We really like how the baby blue / white combo matches the interior finishings. Take a look at the images to see the paint in more detail.

Glass and Trim

The glass and trim on this car look great, every panel looks free from damage or wear and the rubber seals look good too, with areas matching its age and mileage.

Steve reports the windows and doors are fully watertight with no leaking observed. The glass has the registration embossed for security. Please see all the videos and photos for a detailed view of the exterior.

Interior

Spacious interior, with lots of storage and electrical extras fitted. Perfect for any adventure.

Seats and Carpets

We really like the look of this interior, Baby Blue door cards, seats with white piping and black carpets to finish.

Recently upholstered, Steve reports the rear seat is the classic 3/4 rock and roll bed. It features two seat belts and the cabin floor is covered with hard-wearing vinyl.

Dashboard

Steve wanted to keep the dashboard all original and we think it looks great.

Steve reports all the dials, gauges, lights and controls are fully working. Please look at the images to view the dashboard in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A new 'retro' styled steering wheel has been fitted in this example. We like how in keeping with the rest of the car it looks.

The gear stick is original with a fitted hand grip for those long road journeys.

Please see the images for a closer look at the interior.

Mechanics

Featuring the classic air-cooled 1584CC engine fully serviced by T2 specialists, the new owner can rest assured this Camper is ready for any adventure you're planning.

Engine and Gearbox

The Type 2 featured a new 1.6L engine, dual intake ports on each cylinder head, producing 50bhp.

Steve reports a very well maintained and smoothly running 1584CC air-cooled engine, which has recently been serviced by T2 specialists.

Suspension and Brakes

An important change for the T2 came with the introduction of front disc brakes and new roadwheels with brake ventilation holes featuring flatter hubcaps.

Steve reports that the brakes and suspension are working well, having just passed MOT with flying colours.

The Drive

"Driving a T2 with an air-cooled engine is a different type of driving, aside from the distinctive and heartwarming sound of a purring air-cooled engine. It is a fun way to drive that will certainly charm you, the high seating position and large bay window mean that you see things you never notice from a car, and of course you will be going a little slower, the pace of life with a T2 is more relaxed - this is not a performance drive, its a relaxed enjoyable way to travel and to see the sights.

Sheldon has always started up well and drives smoothly with a nice easy gearbox, and has proven to be very reliable on trips around the UK this year."

Electrics and Other

This VW T2 features: Full-side fittings with storage, dual ring gas hob, electric pump tap and sink, freshwater storage, wastewater storage, Aft cabin/boot with enclosed electronic bay, 240V power hook up, 4 standard 3pin sockets, 12v 'off grid' power system, leisure battery, cabin LED lighting, additional storage, additional air ventilation from roof porthole.

History and Paperwork

This charming, low mileage and well maintained RHD example comes well equipped for any road trip. In it's Blue and White styling it also looks the part too.

Steve has really enjoyed his T2 ownership and after a lot of thought is deciding to part with it.

Hi Keith,
No problem, as I say the worst bit is on the front of the passenger door side, and on the external guttering, I’ve just reviewed the close up video and you can see all of the affected areas on that quiet clearly. If you have any other questions please let me know.

Hi Keith,
The main areas that have some rust are on the front edge of the passenger door, and some bits of the external guttering, if you watch the close up walk around video I have tried to show these on that, I believe the images on the site let you zoom in, but I’m happy to provide closer pics for you, I’m not able to attach them here I guess I would need to send these to you directly? (I will get in touch with the trade classics team now and check how I can do this and I will get back to you)

In terms of the fridge no there is not one, all the wiring and switches should be in place as this was specified when I had the power system fitted, but I haven’t had a fridge installed (we have always managed with a plug in cool box)

Hi Steve
Like the look of your van , as we can’t view at the moment due to lockdown a couple of questions.
Do you have any photos of rust areas mentioned in description , are they surface spots or more deeper and notice there are electrics for a fridge in photos but no mention in description is there one? Cheers Keith.

Hi Chris.

As he’s never been lowered, and has the high top with the top air vent, from the ground to highest point he sits at just a fraction under 8.5 foot.

This does give the great advantage of standing room in the cabin but it does make him rather tall.

Steve.

Hello Steve,
Thank you for that dimension. Unfortunately my garage door frame height is 2.3m (7.5 foot), and we’d want to dry store him in the garage.
Good luck with the sale. Someone will be very lucky!

Hello Steve,
I’m interested in your lovely camper van, but fear it might be too tall for my garage. Can you tell me the height of the camper van from ground to highest point?
Thanks,
Chris

Hi, I love your van!! If I won it in the auction would you keep hold of it until after lockdown as I’m in Aberdeen and can’t get down! This would be my only problem!

Hi, I’m really happy to hear you like Sheldon, I’m sad to be parting with him and hope he finds some one that will enjoy owning him.

In terms of me keeping hold until after the lockdown has ended, I have no issues with this as long as the sale follows the T’S & C’s that are set out, for the payment to be made within the prescribed time scales and to at least arrange/plan for collection.

But given the circumstances effecting us all provided this was done I would be very happy to look after him here until the restrictions are lifted.
Steve.

Hi could you confirm if this is a panel van conversion rather than a microbus

Steve

Hi Sharpey. From all the information that I have the bus was originally registered as a ‘light delivery van’ and then later converted by Devon to the camper van configuration. I’m afraid this is as much I know, I hope that helps with your question. Steve
