Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

One of the original hot hatches; the Golf GTI, blending performance with everyday practicality.

Starting life as a humble family hatchback the Golf was launched in 1974, moving away from the rear-mounted rear-wheel drive layout, that VW were known for, instead opting for a front engined, front-wheel drive format. The GTI version of the Golf, was first seen in 1975 with production starting in 1976.

The GTI was given a beefed up bodykit, with wider arches and the now iconic red frame around the grille. Originally fitted with a 1.8L engine producing ~108bhp mated to a 4-speed manual gearbox. Weighing in at only ~810kg the GTI could reach 60mph in ~9.2 seconds; very quick in the '70s.

This particular car is a 1983 model featuring the updated 1.8L engine producing ~110.5bhp.

Peter bought the car new and has refurbished it in more recent years, including a full interior re-trim with original material, suspension work, with Bilstein shock absorbers and vented Brembo brakes. The car has all the originality ingredients with the new lucky owner being just #2 on the V5. The bodywork has been left largely original and just needs a little bit of work to bring it up a few levels.

Peter has also fitted an Android Xtrons radio system - the GTI comes with an MOT valid until April next year.

This listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Peter the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Having owned the GTI all its life, Peter has recently carried out a light restoration on the car, at a cost of circa £9k.

Picking up the car in 1983, Peter has had many a fun mile in this little a pocket rocket and in 2017 Peter set out to restore the GTI, a process that took ~3 years.

As mentioned, the refurbishment included a full interior re-trim carried out with original fabric. More work was carried out under the bonnet and to the suspension too.

Of course this sale has been an emotional decision for Peter, hence him asking us to help with the sale of the car, as he'd love it to go to a new enthusiast.

Peter has enjoyed his time with the car, but due to a recent health issue, it is now more of a need to find the car a new home.

Peter will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

Flared arches, red paint and lipstick on the grille; the GTI is a true icon.

Wheels and Tyres

The good news is that all the original multi spoke wheels are present on the GTI, however as you can see, they are looking a little tired now with some areas peeling on all four wheels - this was a job Peter was going to do, but now it will be up to the new owner to organise a refurb with a local specialist.

A matching set of Pirelli P6000 tyres were found, all looked to have decent tread left on them, however the sidewalls on all four were showing some cracking in the rubber; we would recommend changing all the tyres after a refurbishment of the wheels.

Please have a look at the photos and video below to asses the condition of the wheels and tyres for yourself.

Bodywork

Peter has left the bodywork original, so nothing has been hidden and the new owner can assess what work would be required. You'll notice a few dings around the car, including a few dents on the driver's door and the front wings and some light areas of corrosion - of course these aren't major issues when you're considering a bodywork refresh.

All the panels line up well with tight panel gaps too.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Peter tells us that this GTI has never been painted since it left the factory, i.e. it's on its original paint - and as such it did look a bit faded showing with an orangey tinge. We noticed a small area where it had been polished through at the front of the bonnet, but considering the paint is some 40 years old, it has done very well.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass looked in really good shape around the GTI, we didn't notice any stone chips or cracks in the windscreen.

The trim looked in good shape too, the bumpers and arches were sitting where they should be, they did look a bit dry though and would benefit from some Back to Black type treatment.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

Interior

Re-trimmed with the original Golf GTI fabric, inside this GTI feels like stepping back in time, with just the addition of a modern head unit.

Seats and Carpets

Peter has re-trimmed the seats and carpets in the GTI, with original fabric he managed to source, even the under carpet was replaced - it was all looking in great shape. In the 'On The Road' video we mentioned the retriever was done by a Maranello employee, this is incorrect / a misunderstanding as this was carried out by an independent trimmer. The mechanic who worked on the car was originally at Maranello, not the trimmer.

We did notice a small tear in the headliner, you can see this in the photos below.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

Dashboard

The dashboard mixes old and new; old dials and a modern Android head unit, which has a retro look until the screen folds out.

The original head unit comes with the car too.

The dashboard looked in great condition.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original GTI steering wheel looks in good condition, with only light signs of wear.

The familiar golf ball style gear stick was present, it looked in great condition too, with very little signs of wear.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to check the condition of the steering wheel and gear stick for yourself.

Mechanics

In its day the 1.8L engine in the GTI gave power to the people, with a whopping ~110.5bhp in such a light car.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fired up first time, and ran well on our drive with Peter, zipping up to motorway speeds without issue.

Gears were engaging easily, with no crunching noticed on our drive.

Please take a look at the cold start video below to see for yourself the performance of the engine and gearbox.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension felt great in the car - Peter has had a lot of work carried out on the suspension including new shock absorbers and wishbone arms. We didn't notice any unwanted noises coming from the suspension.

The brakes also felt great on our drive, slowing the car with no shakes or pulling on the steering wheel, Peter has also had vented Brembo discs fitted to the car.

Please take a look at the on the road video below to see how the suspension and brakes performed.

The Drive

On our drive with Peter the GTI felt great, picking up speed well as you would expect, gears were going in with ease.

The car handled well, with no unwanted noises coming from the suspension. Brakes felt great too, they performed as expected with no unwanted pulling through the steering.

We did notice the odd rattle from the cabin, which is to be expected in a car of this era.

To see the GTI in motion please take a look at the on the road video below.

Electrics and Other

All the electrics we tested on our visit were in working order, such as; clocks, stereo and lights. Peter did tell us the computer on the instrument cluster was not working and needs some attention.

History and Paperwork

A very rare opportunity to own a 1 owner from new Mk1 Golf GTI - and exciting light winter project for the lucky winning bidder.

This 40 years old GTI has been in the possession of Peter this whole time, he has taken care of the car and carried out a refurbishment between 2017 and 2020, both inside and underneath.

Peter has carried out the following; all seating fabric replaced with sourced original material, sound deadening material added in all foot wells, new Android Xtrons Radio System, with forward facing camera & 4 speakers, Bosch fuel injection head & warm up regulator, refurbished and serviced by KMI services, fuel accumulator & fuel pump replaced, 4 x Bilstein shock absorbers & suspension wishbone arms renewed, vented Brembo front discs & pads replaced with new hoses, oil pressure sensor switches replaced, ATD exhaust wrap, heater blower motor replaced, new high quality car mats in all footwells, new 4 layer / all season car cover. Peter tells us that all replacement parts were from VW Heritage.

The GTI comes with an MOT Valid until 13.04.2024, it will also be exempt from ULEZ in February 2024, next year.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
