The MK4 Golf never fails to deliver, a stalwart ever since the original was launched, this one with the 20V turbocharged engine is pretty quick too.

The Golf Mk4 was first launched in 1997, and quickly took Europe by storm, becoming the best selling car in 2001. Volkswagen made a deliberate attempt to take the Golf upmarket with high-quality interior and superior equipment.

The Mk4 was bigger and more sophisticated than its predecessor, it was appraised for the stiffest chassis in its class with the unparalleled build quality. This particular example packs a punch from the regular GTI with its turbocharger, offering the driver 150BHP to tap into.

Twin front airbags, side airbags, ABS, fully adjustable steering column, cup holders, self-dimming interior lights and are all little touches that help set the Golf apart from the competition as well as offering a safe, reassuring drive with plenty of power.

The car has been owned by Rich, for the previous 1 and a half years, over that time the car has seen little use and been stored in his garage as an investment along with an eclectic mix of other high-performance vehicles.

It's such a practical and powerful pocket rocket, I can definitely see why it's so popular across the world.

Whilst browsing around for cars, Rich stumbled upon this lovely low ownership Golf GTI. Being highly original, and fitted with the desirable 1.8T, he purchased the car as an investment opportunity and rarely used it over his ownership.

The car comes with 17 service stamps, 8 of them being the main dealer, the car was last serviced in February 2021. This car was a bit of an indulgence, and now space has become a bit tight, this example deserves to be garaged and so it comes to sale with us. Exterior

Designed for the small family sector, the MK4 offered premium quality that even rivalled the Audi A3.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with the original 16" GTI star-shaped alloys, which really give the car a sporty stance on the road. Unfortunately, the car is missing its VW wheel caps, an inexpensive and easy fix to elevate this car.

The wheels appear in great condition all around, with only some very light curbing marks present on the outer rim. The front tyres are Riken Road Performance and dated 2017, the rear tyres are Michelin (2018) and Falken (2006) with all 4 appearing to have a good amount of tread on them.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks to be in very good overall condition, with the VW built quality really showing its worth. All the panel gaps and shut lines look tight and correct across the car.

The only thing we noticed were some very small dimples on the roof. We have captured high-resolution photos and videos for you to review the condition of the bodywork in detail.

Paint

Finished in the VW colour - Black (LO41), the paintwork on this car looks in line with the age and the mileage, the car has some very minor stone chips and minor scuffs around the bumpers.

We think an afternoon with some polish would really bring out the paintwork and give it an even deeper shine than is already pictured. As always, we captured high-resolution photos and videos for you to have a look at and see the paint in detail.

Glass and Trim

The glass and trim both appear in great original condition across the car. The trim and glass look the part with no major signs of damage, cracks, or chips noticed on the visit.

Superbly engineered with the driver's comfort in mind - practical yet powerful.

Seats and Carpets

The car is fitted with premium Recaro sports seats, which instantly set this top-of-the-range GTI apart from the other MK4 Golfs.

The seats are made from hard-wearing cloth, which have done a great job of keeping seats' shape over the years. If we were being really picky the red fabric colour on the bottom of the seats is beginning to fade.

The carpets and headlining look in line with the rest of the car, generally, in very good condition, the door cards are beginning to sag in places.

Dashboard

Featuring the traditional VW dashboard we're very familiar with, the dashboard and the instrument cluster are smart and appear in very good condition.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

In this highly original example, you'll find the original three-spoke VW steering wheel and 5-speed manual gearstick, which appear in good condition, wrapped in black leather, and showing some slight signs of wear in line with the age and mileage.

Mechanics

Engine and Gearbox

The Golf was offered with multiple engine varients, this GTI example was fitted with a 4 cylinder turbocharged engine which would produce ~150BHP. Coupled with a 5-speed manual, the car can fly up to 60MPH in 8.2s and has a top speed of 134MPH.

Rich and the previous owners have given the car the attention it deserves, through regular yearly MOTs and services, please take a look at the paperwork section for more detail. The drive belt was last replaced in 2015 at ~56,000.

Suspension and Brakes

Rich reports to us a very smooth ride with prompt stopping power from the disc brakes. With a closer inspection, the discs look in very good condition with lots of meat left on the pads. Rich reports no unusual knocks or noises coming from the car.

The Drive

A sporty yet practical drive awaits you, the Golf GTI 1.8L turbocharged block offers ~150BHP of power to tap into whenever you need it. With 5 seats and a generous boot, the car is highly practical, perfect for the entire family.

Electrics and Other

You'll find the original Volkswagen stereo system with cassette player, and climate control on this highly original example.

Rich reports all of the switches, dials, and electrics are fully functional to the best of his knowledge.
