Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

The Wolseley 1500 Series 3 replaced the hugely popular Morris Minor, offering more space and quicker speeds.

The Wolseley 1500 was produced from 1957 to 1965 and utilised many aspects of the Morris Minor such as floorpan, suspension, steering. However, the car was fitted with a larger 1,489CC B-Series engine and MG Magnette gearbox. In 1961 Wolseley launched Series III which offered a revised grille and rear lights.

This example has been fitted with a low mileage Marina 1800 engine and gearbox from an MGB making it a rather special Wolseley 1500. The current owner is a huge classic car fan and purchased the car last year as a near complete project. He's since finished the car with some interior jobs that were required and even joined the Wolseley register.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Kevin the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

In my year of ownership I've had a lot of fun finishing off this car, now it's time for someone else to put it through its paces.

Kevin purchased the car back in the summer of 2020. The previous owner set about completing a full renovation of the Wolseley but due to health reasons a classic car garage in Winchelsea took over the build.

Kevin's improved the car over his ownership by renovating the interior, fitting new reclining seats, carpets and attending to the headlining. However, he is now on the search for a larger estate because of the events his classic car club is undertaking next year.

Please feel free to leave any questions in the comments below, and Kevin will get back to you shortly.

Exterior

A familiar body shape revisited and revised with new trim and an attractive front end.

Wheels and Tyres

Attractive JBW minilight alloys with 8 spoke design are fitted on this 1500, all looking in excellent condition as they were very recently fitted onto the car.

The 14" wheels are wrapped Avon ZT7 tyres, they appear in excellent condition with plenty of tread all around and are dated 2019 including the spare.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks in great condition, a solid example having been restored to a high standard. Shut lines and panel gaps all look good and tight. Kevin reports the doors needing a firm hand as the new rubbers have not yet bedded in.

Paint

A lovely two-tone paint scheme grey over a maroon red really suits the car.

Overall the paint looks very good - even in colour and coverage across each panel having been resprayed in recent years. Being really picky, there is a very minor chip on the offside rear wing and a small mark on the roof.

Please view the extensive photo gallery and high resolution video for a closer look yourself.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in great condition across the car, along with the window rubbers, which have recently been replaced.

No major cracks or chips were observed. The chrome trim is in line with the age and mileage and beginning to show the slightest signs of pitting in areas.

Interior

A smart cabin with some practical upgrades and original items retained for provenance.

Seats and Carpets

With the exterior and mechanical condition of the car in good stead, Kevin set out to improve the interior on the car. New Coverdale carpet and underlay was fitted, along with boot floor lining.

The original seats were a little tired, so replacement reclining front seats donated from an Alfa Romeo 147 were fitted. The original seats are still available if the new owner wishes to have them.

The headlining has also been given a fresh lining and looks great on this model.

The rear seats are original and appear in line with the age and mileage of the car.

Dashboard

A classy wooden dashboard appears in great original condition in line with the age and mileage of the car.

Kevin managed to find new storage compartments for the under dash area which have been fitted to the car. He reports the instruments and controls are in good working order.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

An original Wolseley steering wheel and wooden gearstick are present and appear in great condition in line with the age and mileage of the car.

Please take a look at the photos to inspect in detail.

Mechanics

The Wolseley has been given a touch of power thanks to the addition of a Marina 1800 engine and gearbox donated from an MGB.

Engine and Gearbox

The car is fitted with a 1.8L B18 Engine from a Morris Marina and mated to a 4-speed MG gearbox with a standard Wolseley 1500 rear end. The car features a large bore exhaust and an electronic distributor. It's recently been treated to a fresh service with all the oils being changed. A new clutch master and slave cylinders were fitted too.

The car started the first time in our cold start video which we conducted for the mechanical video.

Please take a look at the the mechanical video to see the engine bay in more detail.

Suspension and Brakes

Kevin reports the car is fitted with larger front brakes from a Riley 1.5, and the suspension is fully operational with no unusual knocks or noises coming from the car while driving it around town.

Additionally, a whole host of spares come with the car which include suspension legs.

The Drive

A proper 60s classic, the Wolseley 1500 offers a smooth drive.

With an uprated Morris Marina engine squeezed into the engine bay the car can comfortably keep up with modern traffic and offers increased reliability.

Electrics and Other

When the car was restored, effort was made to keep as much of the original heritage as possible with only a few additions in the engine bay.

Kevin reports all the switches, lights, and buttons work as they should, and some of the spares include light lenses.

History and Paperwork

A restored Wolseley 1500 Mark III with some modern touches and extra power converting it into a usable and reliable classic, while retaining its quirky character.

The car comes with a good amount of MOT reports and receipts and has been put through a recent MOT pre-sale. The car was subject to a major restoration in 2019. The previous private owner bought the car with nostalgic memories of their mother's car. A restorer of classic cars, they had stripped the car and were mid restoration when sadly ill health meant the project stopped and the business had to be sold. Winchelsea then bought the unfinished project and restored the bodywork and mechanics on the car, with Kevin purchasing in the summer 2020.

This is a quirky classic ready to be used and enjoyed, Kevin has mechanically and cosmetically maintained the car himself over the past year. He'll be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

The car comes with a good selection of spares, which includes new quarterlight rubbers (£160) suspension legs, a set of window winder mechanisms, light lenses and a selection of spares parts that will come in handy - please see more details in the paperwork images.

Hi Gary that’s not a problem as I have room, and I am due to collect another classic myself.

Hello Kevin, If I were to be the successful winning bidder, would you be able to hold the car for a week, as I’ve sold another classic this morning, but wont have free garage space until that one is collected.

Hi Robert the wings are steel, I have just rechecked with a magnet.
The reason for the new bolts is that the classic car company I got the car from had purchased it partially restored with the door wings and bonnet off the car so they basically put it back together and I have a couple of photos that show the car with no wings, doors or bonnet on which I am happy to pass on to the successful bidder.

Hi Martin there has been no welding done while I have owned and the under seal is a coating that was sprayed on by the garage I purchased the car from.
If you look at the video of the interior view both the rear door shuts and the wheel arches are shown if you look around two minutes and three minutes you will see both the arches and doors.

Hi, can you tell me how much welding has been done to it? I notice there is a lot of fresh under seal under the car.. I cant see the rear wheel arch /door shuts in the video, (a normal place for concern) have you any pics of them?

Hi Martin
When I got the car I was told the engine was fine for unleaded which is all I have used with no issues.
I don’t have the original wheels however I have an unused set of four Weller steel wheels still in their boxes they are 5.5j
Although designed for the Morris minor they are the same as the Wolseley pcd and offset, they are currently not available from Weller and cost £500 but I am open to offers.
The back axle is quiet with no half shaft issues. The diff is 3.7 and is a strengthened one, neither the MG or Marina axles would fit without some alterations and their half shafts won’t fit the Wolseley axle. I would think the rear axle is original but as the car is fifty seven years old and I don’t have a full service history from new I really can’t say apart from its quiet when driving.
Cheers
Kevin.

Hi Kevin
In the threads you say the engine runs on unleaded, is that by an additive when fueling, or has the head been fitted with hardened valve seats.
Are the original wheels still available?
Any noise from the backaxle, seem to remember that MGB’s and 1.8 Marina/Ital had strengthened diffs and half shafts. Any idea what mileage the rear axle would have covered as likely to be original?
Cheers
Martin

Hi Gary
Thanks for your interest and the main reason I am selling it is because my classic car club are undertaking some camping events next year and I need a larger estate car to undertake the events.

I haven’t done much motorway driving but it happily sits at the speed limit when I have done. It does not appear to use much oil and I put this down to the engine being a low mileage one when it was installed I was told on purchase along with it being suitable for unleaded fuel and it is quite quiet when warmed up. As for water it doesn’t appear to use any.

As far as I am aware there are no known faults and it drives quite briskly compared to a standard car and it starts easily thanks to the 321 electronic ignition, and is much more comfortable with the replacement seats. There are a good range of spares with the car. I also believe in having a current MOT as it confirms the car has been fully checked over.
Like you I like heritage modified cars and I am in the process of buying a Morris Traveller that has many upgrades.

Thanks Kevin.

Hello, Your Wolseley looks lovely, and I appreciate the upgrade to the 1800 engine and MGB gearbox. I am very familiar with British classics and currently own a fast road Frogeye and an Austin A30, both with engine and gearbox upgrades. If you wouldn’t mind answering the following questions.

1. Please could you let me know, why its being sold as I’m quite wary of classics that are being sold after a relatively short time of ownership.

2. I do a fair amount of motorway driving (including to Europe, when allowed). How is the car at motorway speeds, and how is it regarding oil and water consumption?

3. I appreciate this is an auction therefore “sold as seen” and I’m very happy to rectify issues, as long as I’m aware of them beforehand. However, is there anything that I really should know, before bidding on your Wolseley?

Many thanks in advance.
