Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

As the successor to the Morris Minor, the Wolseley was the perfect mid-sized family saloon.

The Wolseley 1300 MkII is a classic British saloon car representing the charm and character of post-war British motoring. As part of the larger BMC (British Motor Corporation) 1100/1300 series, the Wolseley 1300 was introduced as a premium version of this popular range, featuring additional refinement and a distinctively British design aesthetic. With its rounded, elegant styling, the car embodied the refined looks and compact proportions that made British saloons of the era so appealing. The MkII version brought subtle updates to the exterior and interior while maintaining the classic lines of its predecessor, with a prominent chrome grille and "Wolseley" badge lending a touch of sophistication.

Coming to market from ~9 years ownership with our vendor, this is a rare opportunity to own an original car with some genuine patina gathered over ~53 years of what looks like light use all things considered!

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Saving the Wolseley was the only option, considering it’s all original!

John purchased the Wolseley from a customer just over nine years ago. The previous keeper had bought the Wolseley in its original condition from a specialist, but after several years of very little use, it was time to part with the British classic. John stepped in to save the Wolseley, as he used to look after the car in terms of maintenance and MOT, the former keeper coming straight to him to secure a deal.

John is now looking for the car to go to a new home where it will get more use, and he will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Preserved for 53 years, the highly original body presents extremely well.

Wheels and Tyres

The original wheels are in good condition and finished with the original chrome hubcaps, which are in good order. The tyres have a good amount of tread remaining; however, the rear tyres have started to show cracks with age.

Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

The body on the Wolseley is in good order with visually equal panel gaps. It is thought to be in all original condition. There is just a tiny ding on the edge of the front passenger-side wheel arch.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the car’s condition for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in the original green colour, the paintwork appears to be original. There are some chips and a few minor scratches, adding to the patina of the original paint.

Images are taken from various angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to make up your own mind about the paint’s condition.

Glass and Trim

The windows are in good condition, with no excessive scratches but some marks that are inevitable with age.

The chrome inlay around the seals has discoloured with age. The headlights and rear lights are in excellent condition, as is the chrome work, which has minimal signs of tarnishing.

Interior

The original interior takes you straight back to 1971.

Seats and Carpets

The blue vinyl seats are in superb condition, considering they are thought to be the originals from 1971. There is a 1-inch split on the passenger seat, which is on a seam and could possibly be glued to prevent it from worsening.

The carpets show very little wear but have faded somewhat with age. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in excellent condition, with no signs of damage to the vinyl top or the wooden fascia. The instruments are working correctly, and the odometer shows a reading of ~17,892 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more high-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original steering wheel is in good order, with just a few minor marks noted, as expected for its age. The gear knob is also in good condition, with the 1-4 numbers clearly visible.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

Fitted with the reliable A-series black engine, which runs like a dream!

Engine and Gearbox

The Wolseley starts without hesitation, and it runs smoothly with a little bit of choke until it’s warm. There has also been a new exhaust fitted, custom-made from the original jig, so it fits as it should.

The gears in the four-speed gearbox are easily selected, and there are no unwanted noises coming from the transmission.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension is in good condition, and there are no knocks or bangs coming from any corner of the car.

Stopping the Wolseley is done without any issues reported. Take a look at the video to see more detail on the underside.

The Drive

On the road, the Wolseley is just as you would have found it in the 70s, which is great for those who want to take a trip down memory lane for a simpler style of motoring.

Electrics and Other

Coming from 1971, there aren’t many electrical items to worry about, but what is there is working correctly with no issues reported, as far as John is aware.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

History and Paperwork

This car comes to market from ~9 year ownership, presents smartly, and has an original sales brochure shows the full specifications of the Wolseley 1300.

The V5C is present and shows just six previous keepers over its 53-year life. There are a couple of old MOT certificates, but unfortunately, any other paperwork wasn’t handed over when John took ownership of the car.

They don’t come along like this very often! It is thought to be in original condition and with what is thought to be just ~17,892 miles on the clock, although not verifiable. A real treat to own a British classic in original condition.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our view of the car based on information from the seller in the listing above. As you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high-resolution detail—this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa, and take your time to review everything in this listing to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed for all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time—we just need to speak to you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you’re unsure about, no matter how small, please ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can’t be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car—just like in a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
