Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

Classic cars don’t come much more desirable than a Jaguar E-Type, and this one is a great entry into the club.

Instantly recognisable as one of the greatest automotive icons ever, the E-Type’s blend of beauty, pedigree and performance has placed it as a car that will hold eternal appeal. There’s plenty of substance to back up the elegant styling, powered by a charismatic engine straight-six engine, with plenty of feel and agility to make it a sparkling driving experience.

Released in 1961, it was based on the D-Type racing car, the chassis design, independent suspension and its use of disc brakes helped redefine the 1960s sports cars. S2 cars arrived in 1968, restyled to cater for the vital US market, it brought in a range of safety and practical improvements. Considered the best option for those looking for the undiluted E-Type experience, now the S1 cars are out of most buyers' reach, the S2 2+2 coupe benefits from extra cabin space, improved seating and ventilation, which combined with the automatic gearbox offers a comfortable, head-turning but useable classic tourer.

This 1969 2+2 coupe finished in Crimson Red is fitted with the 4.2-litre engine with the twin two-barrel Strombergs carburettors set-up. Imported from the US in 2019, this LHD example has benefited from 50 years of damp-free conditions and appears to have received some level of restoration, supported by a near-perfect interior. The car has recently seen a service, and a current MOT valid to 05.07.2025, the rear shock absorbers were replaced at this MOT.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Ian the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Exterior

Very solid throughout, the Jaguar is neatly presented.

Wheels and Tyres

The wire wheels look good but do show some age-related pitting - we think it can be improved greatly with a bit of time and metal polish.

The car is fitted with a full set of white banded Uniroyal tyres, all are over 10 years old, with mild signs of wear but retaining plenty of tread.

Bodywork

Evidence of a kinder climate has paid dividends to the solidity of the car's structure. The front subframe looks good, and the bulkhead, floor pan and inner wheel wells appear reassuringly solid, with no issues noted on the boot floor other than some surface rust in the spare wheel well.

Externally the car is free from metalwork blemishes, with observations of no significant panel damage. The doors open and close with ease, with visibly even shut lines. The hinges are all up to scratch with just the bottom of the driver's door sitting slightly proud of the bodywork.

Two different keys opens the side doors - in the video we open the off-side door using the internal handle but it does function from the outside.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The car is finished with a Crimson Red paintwork, which has a decent gloss with mild age-related swirls. The paint colour is slightly mismatched on the lowest side sections on the car and shows additional evidence of mild paint flattening.

There are also a handful of small surface marks and chips across the car, but all appear to be cosmetic. A handful of minor under-paint imperfections were spotted on the passenger doors and there's mild orange peeling on the roof.

Importantly the car has been kept in dry storage and free of any outdoor elements.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good shape, with just the windscreen seals showing some signs of age.

The headlamps and rear lenses are in good condition.

The exterior chrome trim appears to be present, correct and presentable.

There are age related marks and wear on the bumpers but nothing that distracts too much.

Interior

Benefiting from a high quality refurbishment, the interior is in excellent condition.

Seats and Carpets

The seats have been professionally refurbished in the recent past, therefore all are in excellent shape.

The carpets and mats have also been subject to new fittings, all are free from dampness.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in excellent order, with no suggestions of age other than the occasional original facia fitting. The centre console and transmission tunnel have also been refurbed. The switches and dials are in good condition, and all but the clock are said to work.

The rest of the interior fittings such as the luggage compartment trim, door cards and headlining are also in great shape.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The wooden steering wheel is in good condition, with the centre emblem and gear knob appearing to be the original items.

The gear lever and its housing finish off a very positive presentation of the cabin.

Mechanics

Mechanically sound, with a recent service, the 4.2-L engine runs beautfully.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fired up without any issues, with no unusual knocks or rattles while the engine was on tick over and there were no excessive plumes of smoke at any point.

Presenting very cleanly, the engine shows evidence of new components, including a recent carb refurb and ignition repair. The hoses and ancillaries all appeared to be in good shape, helping to conclude a positive maintenance record.

The car is fitted with an auto gearbox, Ian has not reported any issues with its use, and it was demonstrated to operate well - please watch the On the Road video.

Suspension and Brakes

No unwanted noises were heard from the wheels, and the ride remained taut and composed, with no wallowing as we cornered. During its recent MOT the rear shock absorbers were replaced.

The brakes were highly effective, and Ian demonstrated their ability to slow and stop the car without any fade. There were no suggestions of grinding or vibrations on the road.

The Drive

A car like no other, the E-Type experience never fails to impress, from the characteristic throaty exhaust soundtrack to the sporty steering control, this big cat behaved impeccably on the day.

The torquey 4.2-litre engine reached temperature without issues and became smoother with every passing minute. Accelerating with composure, there was minimal gearbox lag and shifts positively. During our brisk test drive, the steering remained composed with no wobbles and we didn’t hear any clunks or whines from the differential.

There were no issues in terms of engine temperature, as the oil pressure remained stable.

Electrics and Other

There were no outstanding issues with the cars electrics, according to Ian, and it will be sold with 12 months MOT.

History and Paperwork

Imported from the US 5 years ago, the car has been well preserved.

Originally imported into the US in 1969, it is believed to have spent much of its life in the drier States until it was imported into the UK by Ian in 2019. Following a certificate from the Jaguar Heritage Trust, it was then registered for UK use.

Over the 5 years since Ian has owned the car, it has seen some replacement floor panels, repairs to the ignition barrel and work on the carbs and ignition. The car has also seen a recent service. It has a current MOT valid until 05.07.2025, the rear shock absorbers were replaced at this MOT.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.
