Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner and Photographer

Rare, rugged, and BMW powered - the Defender 90 2.8i is a true collector’s gem, with only 656 ever made.

The Land Rover Defender 90 2.8i is a rare and highly sought-after example of a unique chapter in Defender history. Built exclusively for the South African market, this model was fitted from the factory with the powerful BMW M52 2.8i straight-six petrol engine - a major performance leap over previous Defender power plants.

The 2.8i Defenders were the result of close collaboration between Land Rover South Africa and BMW AG following the BMW takeover, making them top priority at the time. With only 656 D90s and 739 D110s ever produced, this limited run of just ~1,395 vehicles has become a prized piece of Land Rover heritage.

This particular example has had a lot of time and money spent on it by MadeYouLook - a specialist and well known M52 2.8i restoration house in S.A - this build was titled by themselves as MYL 009.

What a job MYL have done - it's in stunning condition and combines classic Defender toughness with smooth BMW performance - the car stands out as both a collectors' gem and a hard working, characterful 4x4.

If you're after something that stands out from some of the others on the road, this is something well worth a closer look at - super rare, lovely condition and capable of just about any track or road condition; there's a good reason this is built for tough adventuring.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Jim the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Exterior

Tough, timeless, and built to stand out - the Defender pairs iconic boxy styling with purposeful details.

Wheels and Tyres

The Land Rover is set on heavy duty 16" black 5-spoke alloys. These are in great condition with very few marks and overall look really smart. The wheel design nicely complements the Land Rover’s off-road tough look.

The wheels are fitted with a set of BFGoodrich - all terrain tyres all round. Tread spec shows 235/85 to the front and rear. The condition of tyres looks good although there was a slight nick to the front driver side tyre wall.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the Defender and a closer look at the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The bodywork of the Defender showed in excellent condition. Looking over the exterior, the panels looking straight and true and we found no major dings or marks noted. The solid build quality was clear on our visit - doors, bonnet, and boot all open and close smoothly, with well-aligned panel gaps throughout.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in "Alpine White", the paintwork presents very well, with no noticeable issues across the coat.

A lovely little detail is the hand written note by the modern-day explorer, Kingsley Holgate, a sign of great significance and tying back nicely to the South African heritage of the Defender.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen, side windows, mirrors and lenses all appear in excellent condition and we could see no sign of scratching or chips on the glass.

We didn't note any issues on the rubber sections on the interior edges with the cabin sections showing very well indeed. Badges and emblems are present and correct.

The seals, badges and light sections to the front and rear look excellent around the exterior and in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

Interior

Rugged yet refined, classic Land Rover utility with just the right touch of comfort.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are finished with black leather with the material looking smart across all areas. All seating sections show in great condition. To the rear, there are four seats in the cabin, a unique setup here, with the seats facing each other. These are stowable, providing plenty of room for storage and passengers alike.

Looking over the carpet sections in the front, the flooring sections showed to be in excellent condition too. The cabin features hard wearing rubber matting to the front section and toughened flooring to the rear. This interior is well set up for off-road adventures.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

Dashboard

The black dash across the centre console all appears in great shape with no observed issues. The top of the dash presents well and without scuffs or marking to this section. Being an import model, the speedometer is displayed in kilometres per hour.

The dials, switches, and controls all appear to be in great condition, with surfaces free from fogging or scratching. We noted no issues with any warning lights on the drive, and the speedometer, fuel gauge, temperature gauge and tachometer were all functioning without concern when starting up the car and out on the road.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The classic leather bound Land Rover steering wheel shows in excellent condition without major signs of wear.

The Defender features both a high-range and low-range gearbox as well as a diff-lock, for all the on and off-road needs.

The gear stick and gaiter shows in excellent condition.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

Down to business: equipped with the powerful BMW M52 2.8L straight-six engine, the Defender offers a perfect blend of off-road toughness and on-road refinement.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine here is something a little different than the normal Land Rover setup, factory equipped with the BMW straight-six, this car delivers ~190 BHP and 0-60 MPH in ~9.1 seconds, offering superior performance compared to previous engines used in the Defender.

Starting up from cool after driving to location, we noted no concerns and the Land Rover performed without issue when running and out on the road. The car idled smoothly and its engine was easily capable of taking the driver up to speed in no time at all.

The 5-speed manual gearbox showed no concerns with shifting the Defender through to the gears effortlessly. We took the car out around some local roads with the current owner to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about - please take a look at the video.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs or issue from the suspension when we were on the road in the car, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling. Looking over the underside of the car during our visit, noted no concerns, again showing very well here.

The brakes felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey and brought the car to a stop without a problem and stopping power and control felt great.

Overall the car performed as to be expected with no observed issues.

Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

The Drive

The drive in the Land Rover is a perfect fusion of rugged capability and refined power. Thanks to its BMW M52 2.8i straight-six engine, it delivers smooth, responsive performance both on and off road.

Whether tackling tough terrain or taking on town and city roads, this Defender offers a dynamic, commanding experience that’s as thrilling as it is dependable.

Electrics and Other

The Defender is complete with a JVC stereo, dash USB input and a spare wheel located on the rear door. During our time with the vehicle we noted that all switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and are in excellent condition.

We tested the factory fitted air con system out on our drive in the car which all operated without concern.

Jim told us that he has had no issues with the electrical elements on the car, and to the best of his knowledge, everything was working as it should do.

History and Paperwork

This is a rare South African-built Defender - with fewer than ~700 produced, this lovely example is a unique piece of Land Rover history.

Exclusively built for the South African market, the Defender 2.8i was powered by the BMW M52 six-cylinder petrol engine - making it a standout in Land Rover history.

Developed following BMW’s takeover of Land Rover, the 2.8i offered significantly improved performance, capable of revving to 6,000rpm and bringing a new level of refinement and power to the Defender lineup.

With production ending in 2016, these unique models are now highly sought after by enthusiasts.
