Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

A key feature of the Supersport package is the widebody design, giving the car its iconic stance.

The 1989 Porsche 911 Supersport Targa stands out as a final-year model of the 3.2 Carrera series before the transition to the 964. Equipped with the M491 "Turbo-look" (Supersport in the UK) package, it combines the aggressive widebody design of the 930 Turbo with the naturally aspirated 3.2-litre flat-six engine, paired with a smooth 5-speed G50 manual transmission. The Supersport package also includes upgraded suspension and larger brakes from the 930, ensuring excellent handling to match the performance. The Targa body style adds to the car’s allure, blending open-top driving enjoyment with more rigidity than a full convertible. Its combination of the Turbo-look body, improved performance features, and collectable rarity makes this model highly sought after by enthusiasts. As one of the last in the 3.2 Carrera line-up, the 1989 Targa Supersport is a timeless example of Porsche engineering and design.

This stunning example, which is in excellent condition, and has benefited from a top-end engine rebuild less than ~8,000 miles ago. It comes to market after ~5 months with our vendor, coming with its original service book, two keys and a current MOT valid until 19.09.2025, and is a genuine UK "C16" example.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Dean the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Exterior

The Targa Supersport stands out from the standard Targa thanks to its desirable wide body.

Wheels and Tyres

The black painted correct optional 16" Fuchs wheels are in excellent condition, with just a couple of minor marks on the passenger rear wheel. A set of Continental tyres keep you glued to the road, and they have plenty of tread remaining.

Please see the image gallery for a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

Walking around the 911, the panel fit is excellent, with no dings or dents spotted. We also didn't notice any corrosion on the car in any of the usual places, a well cared for example. The engine cover does hold up but would benefit from new gas struts. The eagle eye amongst you may also have noticed that the mirrors have been replaced with some from a 964.

We’ve highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos. Please take the time to review all media files to assess the car’s condition for yourself.

Paint

Finished in solid black, the paintwork is excellent. As you know, with black paint, swirl marks are easy to spot, but in this case, the finish appears to have been very well cared for.

The images were taken from various angles to show the car as you would see it in person. Please fully assess these high-resolution images and videos to form your own opinion of the paint’s condition.

Glass and Trim

All of the windows are in good condition, with no noticeable scratches. The seals all appear in good order, showing no real signs of age.

The front and rear lights are in good condition, with no damage to the lenses, and, importantly, no major damage to the Porsche reflector.

Interior

The leather sports seats hold you tightly — a true 80s classic.

Seats and Carpets

The interior has been retrimmed, optioned with "Linen" colour leather (code NA). The seats are in very good condition, but there is slight wear to the outer of the driver’s side bolster as pictured. Both door cards are in good order, although some black paint has flaked off on the driver’s armrest.

The carpets throughout the cabin are in good condition, showing no signs of excessive wear. Inside, the boot also presents well, and the spare wheel is in place.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good condition, with no splits or cracks. All the instruments appear in good order and are functioning correctly. The odometer reads ~107,216 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for high-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The leather-trimmed steering wheel is in good condition, showing only slight age-related wear. The gearknob is also in good order, with the numbers clearly visible.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

A new sports exhaust has enhanced the distinctive sound of the air-cooled 3.2-litre flat-six.

Engine and Gearbox

The 3.2-litre flat-six received a top-end engine rebuild ~8,000 miles ago, with a fully documented invoice and photographs taken during the rebuild as pictured. Starting the car is smooth, and the flat-six comes to life with a fantastic sound. The Porsche had an upgraded Dansk stainless steel exhaust fitted in July 2024, which enhances the sound without being intrusive. No issues have been reported with the car's running.

The more desirable G50 five-speed gearbox is fitted, providing smooth shifts, the 911 pulls well through the gears. Watch the video to see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The ride in the 911 Supersport is firm, as you’d expect from a Porsche, without being overly harsh. The car handles superbly and is a joy to navigate on twisty B-roads.

Stopping power is provided by vented discs all around that came with the 911 Turbo, with Dean reporting no issues.

The Drive

The driving experience is very engaging; the sound, feel, and smell of the 911 Supersport heightens all your senses, making driving this classic Porsche a memorable experience.

As for the looks — if you don’t look back at your car when you walk away, then it’s not the one for you. Rest assured, you will definitely be looking back when you park it up.

Electrics and Other

The switchgear in the Porsche is all in good condition, with minimal signs of age, and is reportedly working correctly.

An upgraded Blaupunkt head unit with a USB connection allows for easy mobile phone connectivity. The speakers have also been upgraded at a cost of £2,187.77.

History and Paperwork

A genuine last year of production UK RHD "C16" Supersport Targa with G50 gearbox, presented in excellent condition and having benefited from a top-end engine rebuild, this rare model is ready to go.

A healthy selection of invoices dating back several years is included, with major invoices for the top-end engine rebuild and some for paintwork carried out over the years. The most recent service was completed in May 2024 by Porsche specialist MLR, Stoke-on-Trent, where it also underwent a full inspection.

We’ve conducted our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5, and a professional history check via HPI. This check will highlight if the car has been stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or has outstanding finance, although it does not include a mileage history check.

We’ve summarised our view of the car based on the seller’s information. However, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the vehicle in high-resolution detail. Please take the time to review everything in this listing to make your own assessment. Viewings are also welcomed—please get in touch to arrange a suitable time. We just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there’s anything you’re unsure about, no matter how small, please ask the owner in the comments section below before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win—just like in a traditional auction house.
