Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

A delightfully British sports car - the Triumph TR6 is a fine example of what classic motoring is all about.

Styled by Karmann of Germany, the TR6 was first introduced in the UK for the 1969 model year. The car built on the tradition of the historic TR range in terms of both styling and fundamental engineering. Sporting more masculine lines than its predecessors, the TR6 was highly successful with the vast majority being exported to the US. Nearly ~92,000 cars were built over a 7-year production run. The TR6 commands a strong following among enthusiasts in the UK. Offering a factory specified ~120MPH top speed and 0-60 in just over ~8 seconds, coupled with legendary handling it is well able to hold its own in modern traffic. These cars still look, sound, and drive fantastically.

This lovely example has been improved by current owner, and comes from ~2.5 years ownership. Presented in a beautifully resprayed blue over a navy interior, the car has seen some sensible upgrades with a new clutch master cylinders, Toyota 5-speed gearbox, new heater assembly and overhauled Stromberg carburettors. The TR6 is a truly lovely and driveable classic ready for many more miles ahead on the road.

This listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Phil the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Exterior

A quintessential 70's British icon, the Triumph TR6 underwent design enhancements at the front and rear while retaining the classic middle from the TR4 model.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 13" Mini-Lite 8 spoke alloys finished in silver, the wheels appear well cared for, with no signs of any concerning damage during our visit, just a few small notes of minor curbing to the edges.

The TR6 is fitted with Pirelli P6000 tyres, 195/65 all round. These appear to be in good condition, dated from 2011 with a good amount of tread remaining.

Bodywork

Looking over the Triumph during our visit, the car largely maintains good visual panel gaps, and both doors and the boot open and close smoothly. The bonnet line sat slightly out on the top rear corner when we visited the car. We did not note any major scratches or dings on the panels, or and signs of obvious corrosion either.

We have highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to review all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The smart blue paintwork has a smooth and even finish across all the panels, overall showing in great condition and complements the TR6 beautifully. Having originally been finished in "Mimosa Yellow", the blue tone is a really eye-catching colour for the car, and is said to have had a full body-off restoration and respray in the past. Unfortunately we got caught out by the typical British Summer weather with a shower on our visit, we think you can still see that it's a well cared for example.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass and soft-top plastic on the TR6 were in great condition, consistent with the car's age; we didn't notice any cracks or discolouration during our visit. The trim and window seals also looked excellent. The TR6 front badge and Triumph logo at the rear appeared smart. We noted that the TR6 outline logo on the rear quarter panels was only visible on one side of the car.

The soft-top roof, replaced by a previous owner, was in great condition and presented no major concerns. Both the front and rear lights were in good shape. The chrome sections around the car were well-presented and added to its overall smart appearance.

Check out the exterior gallery and review video. We guide you through all areas of the car as if you were standing there yourself, so you can see in greater detail how the car is presented.

Interior

The dark interior upholstery perfectly contrasts with the wood dashboard and the Moto-Lita wooden steering wheel.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are in great condition with no apparent damage, just a few notes of creasing, the car likely having been re-trimmed in navy leather at some point in the past. The small rear shelf is in good order. We didn't note any concerns with rips or tears in the front or rear sections.

The main carpet in the interior is in lovely condition, and the carpet in the boot also looks great. Underneath, the carpet sections showed no issues with the bodywork. We cover the cabin area of the Triumph in further detail in our interior review video.

Dashboard

The wood veneer looks in great condition, free from any significant marks. The dashboard presented really well, with no visible cracking or warping when we visited the car and showed ~4,177 miles on the clock when starting the car up. All the numbers and dials on the dash appeared clear and legible.

The gauges, switches, and controls all appeared to be in great condition, with surfaces free from fogging or scratching. Our interior gallery section offers a closer look at the Triumph dashboard.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The Moto-Lita steering wheel is finished in a lovely wooden trim and is in great condition, with no obvious signs of damage or wear. The gearstick, also with a matching wooden finish, is in good condition with only a slight mark on the left-hand side.

Additional images of the cabin area, including the steering wheel, are available in our "Interior Gallery" section to see more details of what the Triumph has to offer.

Mechanics

The 2.5-litre straight-six, paired with the upgraded 5-speed gearbox, delivers outstanding on-road performance.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.5L engine appears to be in great visual condition, and during our cold start video, you can see and hear the engine start up with no issues, smoke, or unusual noises. Whilst out on the road, the engine performed without any problems. The car is a UK home market petrol injection example from factory, but at some point it has been converted to run on carburettors.

The Triumph has benefited from a previous Toyota 5-speed gearbox replacement in April 2022, and as a result, the gearbox did not suffer from any grinding, missed shifts, or other issues that we noted. Take a look at our "On the Road" video, where we cover the engine start-up and take the TR6 around the local area to learn more about the car.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs, or other issues with the suspension while on the road, and it gave us no concerns regarding its performance or handling. The brakes felt great and were easily able to bring the TR6 to a stop. The suspension has had some maintenance work in the current ownership, including fitment of new rear dampers.

We cover the underside of the car in our 'Mechanical Gallery' section. Head over to our video section, where we've summarised our visit in more detail for you to view. We take you through the mechanical elements of the car and give you an overview of what's on offer.

The Drive

The Triumph TR6 is as wonderfully British as the finest British classics, a sports car in name and nature. On the road, the car pulls well, the steering feels precise, albeit a bit heavier than more modern cars, and it produces a fantastic engine noise, especially with the roof down.

It has plenty of punch to keep up with modern traffic, handles beautifully, and provides a truly memorable experience for both driver and passenger. Our 'On the Road' video offers an overview of the car and its performance while driving.

Electrics and Other

All switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and in good condition. Phil mentioned that he has had no issues with the electrical elements of the car and confirmed that everything is working correctly to his knowledge, and had his specialists do any required maintenance work.

During his ownership, Phil had a heater fan installed for the colder months. The tonneau cover is supplied with the car for days out with the roof down. In the boot, a standard spare TR6 wheel with tyre was also present.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~2 year ownership, this TR6 boasts sensible upgrades like a 5 speed gearbox, has been converted to run on carbs, and is presented in lovely condition.

Phil, the current owner, has had the car for the last ~2 years and hasn't needed any major work. Having been originally been a UK home market car, the car is believed to have been exported to South Africa in the 80s, and imported back in finished in Mimosa Yellow, the car has undergone a full body-off restoration to its current colour.

Receipts for work maintenance carried out include a replacement indicator switch, updated ignition switch, various electrical repairs, replacement seat belts fitted for personal comfort (originals come with the car), updated bonnet hinges, and catch, all completed in December 2023 at a cost of £1,290. In April 2022, a new master and slave clutch cylinder were fitted, new relay switches added, and the door lock and latch fixed, costing over ~£770.

In December 2021, additional work was done, including resolving outstanding electrical faults, a new heater assembly and hoses, new wiper blades and fitments, a new fuel transmitter, new door rubbers and adjustments, a carburettor overhaul with new parts, resurfacing the manifold inlet, checking and adjusting the brakes, aligning the wheels, greasing all joints, flushing the radiator, repairing the choke cables, installing a new bonnet cable, and tuning the engine. These works cost over ~£4,900.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.
